Saw the thread earlier about favourite film and just wondered which is the best gig/concert you have been to. Mine is Queen at Knebworth, closely followed by Michael Jackson at Wembley and Cardiff, though in fairness MJ was more of a show than a concert.

Marc Bolan the most beautiful man who ever lived saw him at Brixton Sundown 1972 just before Christmas. I loved T. Rex. Next best was Bowie doing Ziggy Stardust concerts. Saw Queen a few times with Freddie Mercury, when they were good and also Lou Reed was good.

Having been to Glastonbury many times the list is long but my first real and overwhelming gig was Bob Dylan at 'The Picnic' at Blackbush Aerodrome in 1978...he started singing Baby Please Stop Crying which set me off and I didn't stop!! David Bowie at Glastonbury in 2000 is high on the list which became more poignant after his death and also Bruce Springsteen in 2009 also at Glasto... I really never expected this to happen as every year when I asked Michael Eavis when he was going to get him to play he always said, with a smile, that he 'was trying'!! By the time 'the Boss' came on stage on the Saturday night I thought I might spontaneously combust!!

Not exactly a gig because I have never or wanted to go to one but in 1951 on our fourth wedding anniversary we went to La Scala in Milan to see the ballet La Boutique Fantasque.

When I saw Bowie at the Isle of Wight, I thought he was quite arrogant. He didn't want to play any of his hits and basically told the audience it was tough.

Bijou What a romantic place to visit on your anniversary, albeit very close to the end of the war. Was there much damage?
What a long and interesting life. So many stories to tell.
Wishing you well. flowers

Dinahmo I saw Michael Brecker twice, once with Pat Metheny. Also a big fan of E.S.T. too. Would have loved to have seen Chick Corea.

Not the best by any measure but I saw Ginger Baker (Cream) in the early 80’s at a small venue. He was completely off his head. Grumpiest by a long chalk, absolutely Van Morrison.

Barbara Streisand In Manchester years ago I was given the tickets by a friend. They were going for unbelievable prices there were so many stars there.

Shandy3 Thu 08-Sept-22 17:01:20

David Bowie in Stafford once and Birmingham twice
Elton John in Birmingham 4 times!
Both truly wonderful and very memorable concerts.

Music has been my passion since I was a child. I’ve seen so many live acts, it’s too hard to choose a favourite. But I love the whole thing from booking the tickets to eagerly waiting for the show to start.
I do always want to stand up and dance ?

I was at that one too. Found out later it was Freddie’s last tour. Also Knebworth 1990 was fantastic. All day in the sunshine watching an array of great acts, finishing at midnight with Pink Floyd as the thunder and the rain started.

The Who's Quadrophenia tour, George Michael and The Eagles. When I lived in England, near Manchester, the MEN did 80s concerts in December and I went to them all. They all brought back memories of my youth, Go West, Human League, Bananarama, Rick Astley, etc, they had them all. I danced my bottom off all night.

Bruce Springsteen Manchester Old Trafford The Rising Tour.
I think it was 2003, I had seen him in Sheffield about 10 years earlier when my daughter was only 14 but she never forgave me for not taking her. To be honest she was into Take That I didn't think she would be bothered with Bruce. Anyway 10 years later I finally got to take her to Old Trafford. Fantastic summer night, Bruce was, I think, at his best, the crowd was friendly and extremely diverse. We had a wonderful night, we have seen him together several times since, and we have tickets again for him next year!

Diana Ross Wembley about 30 years ago and I saw her again in June this year for her farewell tour at Cambridge festival no one like her, she’s my youth.

Barbra Streisand at Wembley, would have paid the exorbitant ticket price again to see her the next night if we could. She was with the Marvin Hamlisch orchestra and was magical.

You've done the same as DH he missed him in Newcastle because he was going on an interview the next day but managed Sheffield and Manchester. We did see Lindisfarne and Coliseum at Newcastle uni as students.

Back in 1967 when I was 15 I was lucky enough to see the legendary Stax Tour at Hammersmith Odeon Otis Reading, Sam and Dave, Booker T - it was incredible and unforgettable. I think the tickets were something like 5 shillings. Not long afterwards Otis was killed in a plane crash.

stewaris Thu 08-Sept-22 19:19:51

INXS with Michael Hutchence in Glasgow. Can't remember when but it was amazing apart from sometime in the '90's .I was a mature student and went with folk from Uni. They were amazing.

The Rolling Stones played at Roundhay Park Leeds in July 1982. Open air concert on a hot summer day. The support acts were Joe Jackson and J Giles Band. What a day it was. We were there in our bikinis and managed to bring wine in flasks disguised as coffee as no alcohol was allowed.
Our 6 month old son and 4 year old daughter were looked after by grandparents who lived near the park.3 couples went together and we still talk about it. The evening ended with fireworks and Mick Jagger celebrated his 40th birthday.

ClaraB Thu 08-Sept-22 20:39:37

George Michael at Earls Court, one of the last concerts he did.

Pittcity Thu 08-Sept-22 22:49:52

ELO "Wembley or bust" a few years ago. Saw it again on TV recently.
I did see Oasis in the old Wembley Stadium.
Another favourite was Blondie in the pouring rain, can't remember where.

Isle of Wight 2012 - Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Pearl Jam

Grandmafrench Thu 08-Sept-22 23:30:42

Yes, another one for Bruce & The E Street Band, brilliant in a smaller setting, Brighton Centre 1982/3 ?
The Beatles, front row centre seats, 1963, Somerset wink
and a totally incredible Fatboy Slim playing to over 250,000 people on Brighton beach in 2002

I did have a great night when I was working in Cornwall and we had The Levellers playing (not sure if crusty bands are much of a thing on GN) Not only was it a great concert but I was cooking them breakfast in the morning and had a chat with them at the end of the evening.

At the other extreme I was at the Albert Hall in the 60s for an Elgar concert. John Barbirolli and Jacqueline Du Pre. The Dream Of Gerontius and the Cello Concerto. Incredible!
I was also at the Albert Hall the night that The Nice got banned for playing the organ. A shame because their music sounded so good with it.

MayBee70 Fri 09-Sept-22 10:50:20

Was that when they played at The Minack? I found it on utube the other day. I used to take my daughter and her friends to their shows. I go through phases of listening to different types of music but always go back to Levellers, especially Levelling the Land.

MayBee70 Fri 09-Sept-22 10:55:47

There was an iconic venue in Birmingham called Mothers and The Nice were one of the few bands I saw there. I think the reason why Shiw if Hands was my favourite is because I was seated, and they didn’t play too loud. Most things I’ve been to I’ve ended up standing behind someone very tall. And when I saw Kasabian they were so loud I couldn’t even make out what they were playing. Arcade Fire in Nottingham were amazing but someone threw a bottle of water onto the stage and they all walked off and we didn’t know if they would resume playing. It totally ruined the night.
