I only buy Scottish meat on the odd occassion I buy it in a supermarket .Most supermarkets here label Scottish produce with a Saltire .I usually buy from a local butcher but when there was a shortage during the first lockdown he advised me to get some chicken in Aldi as they have the same supplier of local chicken he uses ...it was labelled Scottish and with a Saltire

Maybe you could start a petition eg with Change.org ?

We have phoned ASDA on numerous occasions Re British products.

I was thinking of the petition idea, maybe having a model letter and giving the CEO addresses of the major supermarkets so that people can send them on.

Change.org were very much in favour of a second Brexit referendum which leads me to believe they don’t have a problem with chicken breasts coming from Poland.

I'm with paddyann54 - I tend to buy my meat from my local butcher, but Aldi do use a lot of Scottish suppliers, so I'm happy to shop there too. They've started stocking proper buffalo mozzarella from The Buffalo Farm in Fife, which is absolutely delicious.

They do - but I have to ferret my way round the site to find it - I am proposing a section on the site where I can buy all my shopping British-produced.

Excellent idea Luckygirl3. Why not start a petition? I always try to choose Scottish products myself but others would find it easier if products were labelled clearly with their origin.

I have never seen Polish chicken in Tesco although I have seen Polish mushrooms and tomatoes.

Some ready meals use meat produced overseas so it's important to check labels if you feel it is important, usually there is ???????, ??????? or ?? on the front of the pack.

Perhaps having a section for foreign food could be interesting!

Luckygirl isn't saying it isn't available, just that it isn't as easy as having a British produced section. If you are ina rush/busy/have to order your shopping within an hour, it would be easier to have a designated section.

I always check the origin of all meat- UK only for us. Most of the pork, gammon etc. in Asda is of Dutch, Danish or German origin and because it’s quite a bit cheaper than UK origin, I assume factory farmed. So I just won’t buy it. Denmark in particular is notorious for factory farming. Not that we eat much meat at all any more, but if I want e.g. gammon. I go to Waitrose for higher welfare, UK origin.

well i'm not sure because i don't eat meat, but i think lidl tries to source meat from britain and ireland. and is clearly labelled as to origin.

I buy from Lidl meat that has on the label in big letters British, also buy from Waitrose and a local butcher. I wouldn’t touch Tesco,

I think a lot of people need the cheaper option although I do not understand how food is cheaper produced and transported from other countries.

I am not a meat eater but it is the same with fruit and veg unless you buy in-season local produce.

Exactly Jane - it is not about these things not being available - it is about having to search through the whole site to find the British produce. And of course, the chicken was just an example - it apples to everything: dairy, fruit, vegetables etc.

If all these British produced goods were in one place on the sites then it would be easier to find them, and also would help to focus the minds of the supermarket bosses on where they are getting their goods from.

I also understand that the reason the supermarkets buy in foreign goods is because they are cheaper - makes no sense, but there it is. Not everyone can afford to pay more for British produced goods, but those who can will be able to do so more easily.

We tend to buy from a butcher, greengrocer, fishmonger etc, however when I can I use Booths supermarkets.
They promote local produce and of course British food.
I used to live in the Ribble Valley so it was local to me, sadly now only when on our travels.

All Waitrose chicken is British I believe.

Our animal welfare laws are much higher than many countries, including Australia. Luckily Ms Truss signed a deal to buy meat from Australia! Simply doesn’t make sense.

Its my understanding that they support people who want to set up a petition democratically. It’s up to the public whether they support it. I get all sorts of petitions from them. If I agree with them I sign, but if I disagree I don’t.
