My daughter-in-law’s waters broke last night and she’s been having contractions, on and off, all day. We’re taking care of the dog, the other grandparents have our granddaughter…..and we’re all on tenterhooks hoping that baby puts in an appearance overnight.

It’s been a difficult year with many family members having serious health issues, so we’re all looking forward to the joy that a new baby brings.

Is anyone else in line to be a granny before the year’s end? This little chap will be my tenth.

grannyactivist, congratulations, how lovely. It nearly was a bouncing baby boy!

We nearly lost our daughter when the hospital wouldn't listen that she was bleeding heavily even though they knew the placenta was low. It beggars belief sometimes.

Congratulations GA. All’s well that ends well. A bouncing baby boy! ??
My DD wasn’t believed either and gave birth to her first baby on the floor in the reception office minutes after arriving in the hospital while the midwife shouted like a banshee for assistance. Shouldn’t be happening in this day & age.

When I worked in clinical practice, I did some obstetrical nursing. (I worked in a Canadian rural hospital where maternity was just part of acute care.) I always told the mothers that if they felt they needed to have a bowel movement, they needed to let me know right away as I had to check. It could be the baby, and we would prefer not to be fishing babies out of loos grin

My DiL is due on October 8th. First baby for her and my son. They know its a boy but DiL lost her dad early June from Covid, after having overcome leukaemia last year so a very bittersweet time for them

Congratulations, a lovely little grandson, glad all went well.
I became a grandma for the second time in February and can’t quite believe my newest little grandson is already nearly 7 months old!

Super-mega-congratulations to you all and to that mum! As a doula I'm very familiar with the phenomenon whereby a woman births quite quickly once she's taken herself off to the loo. It's because the oxytocin hormone, which causes contractions (among much other good stuff) responds especially well to being in a private, safe, familiar (or relatively familiar) place. The bathroom is the one room in all our lives which we are accustomed to locking ourselves into so it's super-effective. Conversely, having lots of people around watching her and asking questions, or even feeling the performance anxiety of knowing that family members are asking for updates (as opposed to being quietly sent text messages!) can have a very negative effect on labour.

Ps as an ex midwife I ve delivered many babies in precarious positions, including in a car at the front s’doirs of the hospital, but they re very resilient, both mums and babies and thankfully our memories mostly tend to focus on the positives in the aftermath

Congratulations! I’ve had one new grand daughter and a great niece & great nephew since lockdown. All arrived safe and well!

I had a breaking of the waters scenario with my first, and the proper labour took ages to start. So don’t get too worried if you don’t get much news - I’m sure all will be well.

10th! You are very lucky. I had three children. My son died when he was six in 1980 and my younger daughter doesn’t want any children. My elder daughter has an eight-year-old daughter and a little boy who is one next month. She went through early menopause and after IVF which didn’t work, her sister donated her eggs, so he is a miracle baby. She had a really rough pregnancy, apart from having to inject herself several times a day for the whole pregnancy, as she has hypermobility and had a lot of problems with her joints, with a lot of pains in her hips and pelvis. I’m very grateful that I have two beautiful grandchildren, but would have loved more.

Congratulations to all the family. A new baby always brings great joy.flowers

I have to ask in all honesty, who would want to bring a baby into the world these days? Just think what might be inflicted on that child in an already overpopulated world. I think it’s quite selfish if I’m honest.

HurdyGurdy Mon 12-Sept-22 12:33:54

Goodness, what a dramatic entrance to the world!

Congratulations to the new-again parents and to the big sister, and of course the wider family.

I've never scrolled through a thread as quickly, to find out what happened grin

Seriously. THAT'S your contribution to a joyful thread.

grandtanteJE65 Mon 12-Sept-22 12:46:32

Congratulations! So relieved to hear it went well, as you must be too.

Seems almost as if a longer time lapse between the waters breaking and the actual birth is becoming normal. Or is it just me that thinks this?

In our day we were told that the waters breaking meant there wasn't all that much longer to go.

Was this just a comforting lie?

HannahLoisLuke Mon 12-Sept-22 12:52:01

I’m due to be a great grandmother in the next week! Can’t wait.

Rosina Mon 12-Sept-22 13:20:03

Wonderful, happy news! A long and healthy life to the new, precious baby. x
