Why should they jump the queue

I have just read that David Beckham turned down an invitation from an MP who can take up to 4 guests and jump the long queue for the Queen’s Lying in State.

Firstly, well done to DB and the other celebrities who queued and secondly, it seems very unfair that these people are given this ‘privilege’ when the majority of people are queuing in the cold and dark for many hours. We were all subjects of Her Majesty.

The elderly and disabled are rightly given a fast track, but these are able bodied people .

NotTooOld I entirely agree with you, 4 tickets are completely unnecessary. It did look this morning as if there was a line of MPs forming a third row to the left of the screen, but I only glanced for a few minutes, I may be wrong.

Does anyone know if any other ‘people in the public eye’ (I intensely dislike the ‘ cel….’ word) apart from David Beckham and Suzannah Reid, who actually waited for hours in the queue. Though I am not a particular fan of SR, I thought it was impressive that she went on to Bill Turnbull’s funeral afterwards.

The MPs should spend their time working for us and not standing in a queue, however I am completely anti every guest being issued with 4 visitor tickets

Agree with you entirely, karmalady. Let the MPs have a quick look and a nod and then get back to the drawing board to sort out the mess we are all in.

As for David Beckham, he's very lovely but I do wonder why such a good looking man would cover himself in awful tattoos. Leave it now, David, you've got more than enough.

I am in agreement with you on all these matters.
I think MP’s and wives should be able to not queue up, not just time related but they may face abuse, it is really about security for them.

I think MP’s and wives

I think you'll find some of the MPs have husbands.

I was surprised to see Black Rod interviewed by an Australian journalist , queueing up with everyone else yesterday, especially as he had some part in organising the occasion!

Black Rod is a woman. Who were they interviewing?!? ?

JaneJudge Sat 17-Sept-22 14:43:22

Sharon Osborne apparently queued too
I do feel a bit disappointed we haven't had a pantomime horse yet or a a big hairy bloke in a bikini. It's not quite carnival enough atm

Lieutenant-General David Leakey formally known as Black Rod...

volver Sat 17-Sept-22 14:51:44

He's not Black Rod any more. She is.

Apparently this man used to be Black Rod.

Sorry, pressed send too soon!

She is: www.parliament.uk/business/lords/media-centre/house-of-lords-media-notices/house-of-lords-media-notices-2017/november-2017/sarah-clarke-appointed-to-the-role-of-black-rod/

Apparently David Leakey used to be Black Rod. What a co-incidence to have picked him!

The post has been taking a very long time to be delivered to and around Australia.

It would have been simple to issue people with timed tickets to view the coffin. That way a lengthy queue could have been avoided but of course the establishment want a long queue to show how much the late Queen is mourned and it provides an opportunity for Royals to queue visit which in turn generates media attention.

Grantanow Sat 17-Sept-22 15:44:44

And I see no reason why MPs and their mates should be given priority over ordinary folk.

Aspen Sat 17-Sept-22 15:55:00

The MPs were present when the coffin first arrived in Westminster Hall then they all filed past it. Why do they need a second go and who though up this idea that they should have a pass for 4 other people.
