The Speaker said the Queen's funeral will be the most important event the world will ever see

As much as I respect the Queen- this is total nonsense and is such a bizarre thing to say. WW1, WW2, Hiroshima, the Holocaust, the invention of penicilin - the list is endless!

He is just so out of his depths!

GagaJo Sun 18-Sep-22 18:32:07

Totally agree.

LOUISA1523 Sun 18-Sep-22 18:33:15

The holocaust was hardly an 'event'

LOUISA1523

The holocaust was hardly an 'event'

Neither were the World Wars…..

Antonia Sun 18-Sep-22 18:38:49

Diana's funeral?

VioletSky Sun 18-Sep-22 18:39:33

I'd say her coronation was more important, or something like women getting the vote

Iam64 Sun 18-Sep-22 18:46:08

He’s talking about ‘an event’, not a process like women getting the vote, or a coronation.
I don’t know enough about other ‘events’ to know whether the speaker is giving simply his point of view.
The death of the Queen, the ceremony that we see daily in the build up to the funeral is more momentous than anything else in my lifetime

An event is an important thing that happens...

The Speaker said the Queen's funeral will be the most important event the world will ever see .
..............................Well he is Right

World leaders will be all together under one roof in peace! attending the funeral of our Monarch Queen Elizabeth II

you are way out of your depth here Fleurpepper. .

Baggs Sun 18-Sep-22 19:13:31

I'm inclined to agree with lemsip's interpretation.

What an odd thing to say.

It's obviously not the most important event the world will ever see.

Baggs Sun 18-Sep-22 19:20:09

No odder than what was said about Mr Speaker.

TBF, I rather like this twtr comment from jimmyjamesuk: "Surely no. 2 should be renaming Marathon to Snickers. Such importance. I’ll phone Lindsey" grin grin

My comment went far beyond his latest comment. He has proven to be a very poor Speaker in the House, with little authority or control.

Kate54 Sun 18-Sep-22 19:49:17

Some world leaders will be there but not all (e.g. Putin). Just saying…

Blondiescot Sun 18-Sep-22 19:50:49

Antonia

Diana's funeral?

Not even remotely important in the grand scheme of things...

Fleurpepper Sun 18-Sep-22 20:05:33

It certainly will be for a large section of the British population- but certainly not all. But as far is the World is concerned- his comment is nonsense.

toscalily Sun 18-Sep-22 20:10:51

I think it would have been more accurate to have said it "is one of the most important events the UK has ever seen"
There is no doubt it is a very important event and means a lot to many people.

nadateturbe Sun 18-Sep-22 20:13:56

It's just not true.

MayBee70 Sun 18-Sep-22 20:15:03

I must admit that my first thought was what about Hiroshima. And I’m someone that has watched pretty much all of the coverage and shed tears over The Queens death.

Glorianny Sun 18-Sep-22 20:15:31

Well there you have it. The deaths of ordinary people, in 2 world wars, the holocaust, covid, the black death count as nothing. One old woman being buried tops them all.

MaizieD Sun 18-Sep-22 20:16:24

Are you disappointed?

MaizieD Sun 18-Sep-22 20:17:32

I agree with those who say the Speaker's statement was ridiculous.

Pittcity Sun 18-Sep-22 20:20:03

I wonder what Neil Armstrong would've thought?

Fleurpepper Sun 18-Sep-22 20:27:36

Some people can be so insular and totally lose the ability to see the larger picture.
