My husband keeps informing me of the benefits turmeric has ( despite the fact he isn't drinking it/eating it or swallowing the pill )

I myself have never heard of it being used in a sentence referring to its benefits.

Can anyone shed light on this ?

Thank you smile

There is a lot of serious medical research which show turmeric to be a very strong anti-inflmmatory and helpful with arthritis, and even some forms of cancer and even Alzheimers/dementia.

Right, well that in itself is a benefit....

Thank you

I put half a teaspoon in hot chocolate. Gives it a bit of a kick. The sugar probably negates the health benefits though.

I make a lovely drink with turmeric latte mix heated in milk with a bit of honey to sweeten it. I sometimes melt in some white chocolate to make it more of a treat.

It's coming to the time of year when I'll start making it again - it's very warming.

You do need to strain the golden milk though, unless the latte mix is processed. Raw turmeric doesn't dissolve, so it's a bit gritty if you don't. I just use a tea strainer.

Those links all seem to be selling supplements containing turmeric Fleurpepper. Do you have any links to independent research, peer reviewed papers or controlled clinical trials?

Turmeric needs heat, fat and black pepper otherwise the body can’t absorb it so I make up a batch: put turmeric and water in a saucepan, heat for several minutes then add coconut oil ( or olive oil) and black pepper. I also add cinnamon but it has to be Ceylon organic. Shouldn’t be used if you’re on blood thinners though. I make a drink with milk and add the golden paste but do add a sweetener to it. First heard about it when my last dog had cancer and a forum I was on recommended it along with flax seed. Vit D is recommended to help with MS I believe.

I don’t think they tend to do clinical trials for things that the drug companies can’t make lots of money out of. Apart from not taking it if you’re on blood thinners it can’t actually do you any harm. I was going to have radiotherapy on some lumps in my hand ( Dupuytrans) and the doctor advised me to stop taking turmeric before it was done. I decided not to have the radiotherapy but continue with the turmeric instead and ( touch wood) my Dupuytrans and Ledderhose ( in my feet) never got any worse.

It appears that the jury is still out on turmeric:

My optician said it is good for eyes, especially if you have MD in the family

Bought a couple of packs from H +B last winter, it was in an orange box, and with black pepper. It was a high strength turmeric (and on a two for one offer). It helped with my wrist pain an d knee pain from loading the logs onto the stove.
I recommended it to my sister who has hip pain and she reports back that has gone .

The powdered turmeric from the supermarket goes into soups and stews.
About an hour after eating a meal containing turmeric I do notice it’s wonderful anti inflammatory effects ( also strangely it really clears my chest and sinuses). Must be used with black pepper though.

It’s worth a proper try, a couple of months on it then see if there is an improvement.

I add it to fish dishes and curries. A lot of people here think it is good for you. I usually forget to add it though, I have to admit.

Serendipity22 Wed 21-Sept-22 06:59:48

Wow..... so Mr S is correct on turmeric..... like I say I have only heard it added to food...... interesting.

Thank you for all your posts...

Grammaretto Wed 21-Sept-22 07:01:40

I, like nanna grate it into curry along with ginger. It gives the golden colour to curries and stains my fingers
When DH had cancer he was told by friends to take turmeric but also a particular bracket fungus both claimed to shrink the tumours.
His oncologist had never heard of it.
After DH died I threw out the lot along with his prescribed drugs.
I'm being offered turmeric from Bhutan by a friend just now. I wasn't thinking of adding it as medicine but perhaps I should.

Word had it passed round the gym that turmeric was not just good for osteoarthritis and other joint pains but has helped some a great deal.
So its not only worked really well for me for relatively low level osteoarthritis but even more for my 87 year old friend who found it made getting around much easier and pain eased substantially.

I chatted to an Indian friend and she laughed becuase it's well known in Ayurvedic medicine for a number of things..

To be really effective if you want a once a day supplement you need a high dose, I use Lamberts 20.000mg tablet. That is expensive, but I googled just now and see that Nature's Best brand do a 10.000mg tablet.

I know "the jury's out" in some ways but my POV is that it can't harm you and may help so it worth a try. I cant comment on other conditions as I've never spoken to anyone taking it for MS etc.

I take Turmeric and the best way and most concentrated is turmeric paste. You can either make it yourself or buy it ready made but it needs to have a high concentration. There is a very good Facebook group devoted to this called ‘Turmeric Support Group’. If you can, have a look because there’s lots of help and advice. Also the best places to buy highly concentrated turmeric. It’s definitely helped me but it doesn’t work well with sugar as sugar is counter effective as sugar is bad for joints.
