Heavier bedding and sleep

I changed from summer to winter yesterday and added some weight. Now linen sheets as before fitted bottom sheet and flat top sheet, plus wool summer duvet plus a medium weight cotton beadspread. The added weight was lovely and I have to say I am sleeping much better

I have been cold at night this week, so plan to put on our heavy velvet bedspread at the weekend, I know I’ll sleep better for the weight.
Couldn’t get on with a weighted blanket though.

Not for me I've still got my Summer quilt with a light blanket on top I'll add my Winter quilt eventually but its also light I don't like a heavy quilt feel like I can't move.

I treated myself to winter coloured linen, with a squared 2 colour natural and magnus grey pattern on one pillowcase and the duvet cover, my cotton bedspread in cooler summer is ivory and I happened to see the one that would match winter theme for half price in mink

It was a perfect match and it changed the ambience to hibernation from cosy

That plus the extra weight did it. Probably equivalent to a weighted blanket. A bit like the ex army blankets when I was a child

I bought a lighter duvet 10.5 as 13.5 tog was too much for me. I got teddy duvet cover and fitted sheet last year money well spent with a set to change. Warm cosy keeps the cold out and so comfortable now on all the beds.

I LOVE my weighted blanket and couldn't wait to put it back on the bed once we had the cooler nights. I find it so comforting (as well as warm, obviously).

I have added a faux fur throw to the Summer weight duvet this week, as it is much cooler now, but will not use the Winter duvet for a while yet.I agree that the added warmth, not sure about the weight factor, does aid sleep.

I found a few years ago that if I put an extra pillow over my shoulders as I settled down to sleep it really helped.

Casdon Wed 28-Sept-22 09:54:04

I’m obviously weird as I don’t like being too warm in bed, and the best thing to aid sleep for me is having a cool head, I use a pet cooling mat in a pillowcase to achieve that. I don’t like weighty bedclothes, so I just change the tog value of my duvet to a 10 for the winter.

I've just bought an All Seasons duvet set, 9 tog and 4.5 tog which can be used separately or clipped together to make 13.5 tog. That covers all year round.

Winter duvet is great - plus my lovely hot water bottle!

Franbern Wed 28-Sept-22 10:35:06

Being too warm is the surest way for me of ensuring I cannot sleep. At present, I have a top sheet and a thin coverlet. Have, this week, closed bedroom windows at night. No heating on anywhere at present. Wear a short sleeved cotton nightie.

When it gets colder at nights I will change that thin coverlet for my 4.5 tog duvet. Rarely need anything more in the winter - if I do, I just put that coverlet over the top of the duvet.

Just to say that on the occasions I have to stay overnight in any hotel, one of the first things I do when I go into the bedroom, is take the duvet out of its cover, and just use that cover on the bed.

The daughter who lives locally to me already has her 10 tog duvet on her bed and the electric blanket.

I often read mention on here of 'quality' sheets and wonder if this is simply the thread count being referred to or are there some other ingredients? Anyone advise or care to comment, please?

+ my lovely micowavable hot barley bag (home-made, long, wide, with strong cotton (ex Habitat curtains from the 70s). Bliss. Use it whilst reading/watching TV, then another blitz before going to bed.

Kim, pure linen as in flax, good all year around, cool in summer and warm in winter., my choice now for me, although pricey. I have had high thread count egyptian cotton in the past, they retained heat in summer and the pure white gradually yellowed, they sounded good but were an expensive mistake. A good cotton mix is nice, non iron and much cheaper. Good in summer but too cool in winter. I had mine in the past from john lewis and still use them on my guest beds

Thank you K, I'll pursue that with vigour. Flax..... here I come. Appreciated.

Sleeping is one thing I do really well. Have never needed the second bit of my clip together duvets. The 4.5tog was washed on Monday and went right back on the bed after the glorious sunshine had it dry in no time.
I do intend to cut back on my heating this winter so maybe I shall need to look out the other duvet eventually.

Hi,
Just a query.
Are any of the duvets you mentioned like the summer lot?
Why I ask is because, for some reason, I keep waking up if using a thicker duvet but seem fine in the summer with the less padded lot.

MaggsMcG Fri 30-Sept-22 11:58:28

When I try extra weight it doesn't seem to .ake much difference to me. I will be trying again this year though. Along with a blanket down stairs for my sitting time. I will change the timing of my heating by a hour each end.

Granless Fri 30-Sept-22 12:03:55

What is missing here is whether you sleep in nightwear and what it is. That makes a big difference in relation to the tog rating of your duvet.

SparklyGrandma Fri 30-Sept-22 12:04:01

I’ve got a very light 15 tog single duvet. Any heavier and it would be hard to move during the night due to arthritic pain.

Theoddbird Fri 30-Sept-22 12:09:42

Has been well over 25 years since I had a duvet. I have layers of handmade patchwork quilts, blankets and sheets. Number is dependent on weather. Always cosy in winter.

Alioop Fri 30-Sept-22 13:02:59

I've went from 4.5 tog to 7.5 this week and found it heavy so goodness knows how I'll manage with my 13.5 in the freezing months. My legs were in and out all night long.

Yum...two duvets and a hottie...so warm and cosy
