Heavier bedding and sleep

I changed from summer to winter yesterday and added some weight. Now linen sheets as before fitted bottom sheet and flat top sheet, plus wool summer duvet plus a medium weight cotton beadspread. The added weight was lovely and I have to say I am sleeping much better

Love winceyette bedding and 10.5 tog duvets - cool weather bliss.

Nannan2 Fri 30-Sept-22 13:42:41

I like to layer with bedspread & a throw or 2 then top with an actual blanket when its much colder. No longer use a duvet, not for a while.

Brushed cotton sheets for me, summer and winter, and I’m rarely too hot or cold. 13.5tog duvet all year. On the rare few nights that it’s warm in this part of the country, I throw the duvet down and pull up the lightweight throw that lies across the bottom of the bed. In the winter, I sometimes have a fleece throw on top of the duvet, but don’t use an electric blanket or hot water bottle.

You lot are making me overheat just by reading your posts.
I'm still sleeping under an empty duvet cover.
When the duvet eventually goes back on the bed it's a 3.5tog and sees us through winter.

Brushed cotton or flannelette bottom sheet for me.

We have a 10.5 tog Siberian goose down duvet with a cotton cover. It was expensive but it is cool in summer and warm in winter. It took a bit of getting used to at first as it is quite light weigh and doesn't seem like it would be warm enough. I don't think I could sleep under a heavy cover now

I have also had a wool filled duvet in the past which was also very warm.

Since the menopause, I have always used natural materials on the bed. My duvet covers are all 100% cotton - murder to iron but I love them

We have four open weave blankets and use according to the temperature. We lived in hot climates and now always find duvets too hot. I get heat rash when staying in hotels! I love pure cotton sheets, they have to be a good weight, thin ones always need ironing.

Nicolenet Fri 30-Sept-22 15:26:02

Not sure why but this year I was too hot this summer and I am feeling the cold now. Did not use to feel the seasons in the past. Must be getting old!

TwiceAsNice Fri 30-Sept-22 15:32:39

Just changed from summer duvet to winter one as just starting to feel colder last week. Slept much better last night as I was warm enough. Also have thin throw on top as cat sleeps on my bed and it keeps her fur moults off the bedding

I have poor circulation and arthritis but cannot stand bedding of heavy weight. Also I have to get out for wee a couple of times so get tangled up if I have too many layers. Have never had more than a 4 tog duvet usually 2 tog. Have an electric blanket which it is possible to keep on all night.

4allweknow Fri 30-Sept-22 17:15:52

10.5 tog duvet on last week. A hot water bottle in the bed just to warm the area before I get in. Lovely. Curious about all the mentions of linen bedding. Haven't seen any since I was a child. How creased is the bedding after washing, basing this on how easily creased linen clothing becomes when worn never mind washed.

We're still using our 4.5tog summer quilt as it doesn't seem cold enough yet to change it. I usually take my cue from DH as he feels the cold more than I do. He prefers a heavier quilt, and if it gets really cold we have a super-king size handmade quilt that I made last year which will add extra warmth and weight. My nightwear is Chanel No.5 and DH likes his cosy pyjamas. We always sleep with the windows open unless it's blowing a gale which would keep us awake.

M0nica Fri 30-Sept-22 18:41:24

I hate heavy bed clothes, they make my ankles hurt and stop me sleeping. 1 have 13.5tog duck feather and down duvet and I love it, it settles gentle over me and shapes itself round my body unlike the synthetic fillings that seem to just drape like a blanket.

Barmeyoldbat Fri 30-Sept-22 18:59:25

Monica, you are the first person I know who finds heavy bedding hurts her ankles, same here and I use a duck feather and down duvet, love it and feels like it floats over me.

growstuff Fri 30-Sept-22 19:05:26

Well, I can be the second person. I can't sleep with heavy bedding and it hurts my neuropathy-ridden ankles too. My feet usually stick out of the bedding, which means I have to wear bed socks or my feet get ice cold and start hurting anyway.

Oldnproud Fri 30-Sept-22 19:11:41

I have just bought a 15 tog duvet.
It's really light (and was cheap), but seems to keep the warmth in really well.
DH loves it, but I prefer something heavier.

Fleurpepper Fri 30-Sept-22 19:19:48

Just changed the duvets for mid season one- as it will be even colder when we return from holiday (and I love having clean bedding to return to).

MamaB247 Fri 30-Sept-22 19:21:33

Try a weighted blanket they are ideal

DutchDoll Fri 30-Sept-22 21:08:58

We have a 1tog (M&S) duvet in summer with a 2nd 1 tog duvet on top of that for wintertime. If it's horrendously cold then we just put a fleece throw over the top.
We do have stored away, but never used for a decade or more, one of the summer/winter 4.5/10.5 duvet sets.
Love 1 tog duvets but have only ever seen them in M&S in the Spring and summer.

gulligranny Fri 30-Sept-22 21:30:29

We are still slumbering happily under our 1-tog duvet, but I do have a fleecy throw if we get chilly. We'll switch to the 4.5-tog one about the end of November and that, again with the fleecy throw, will take us through to the Spring; we do have a 10.5 tog duvet but felt stifled by it, so it's been relegated to the very back of the cupboard that lurks in the wall ...

Nanatoone Sat 01-Oct-22 08:33:38

1 tog for me (on my own), more than enough for me. Was boiling last night too so put the fan on. I will add a wool blanket in the winter but it will be on and off. I can’t bear to be hot. I don’t always wear night attire but so often use a heated pad to help my sore back and hips. That’s plenty for me.

M0nica Sat 01-Oct-22 08:38:55

I like to be warm and cosy in bed and if I am unwell, I will wear extra night clothes to boil any infection out of me.

Kathmaggie Sat 01-Oct-22 17:56:26

Cosy brushed cotton sheets for me - do like a top sheet even under my duvet. Haven’t progressed to the heavier duvet yet tho.

Visgir1 Sat 01-Oct-22 18:21:39

I have a 1 tog summer quilt, but just gone to 4.5tog for the winter.
That's all I can cope with now, I get far too hot these days!

JaneJudge Sat 01-Oct-22 18:24:43

Sparklefizz

I LOVE my weighted blanket and couldn't wait to put it back on the bed once we had the cooler nights. I find it so comforting (as well as warm, obviously).

you ca buy summer weighted blankets now smile
