Our front door automatically locks when we come in, we have side gate that is always locked and bolted top and bottom but I never lock back kitchen door, Anyone else?

Front door locked always as we face outwards on cul de sac. Back door open all day leads onto garden and patio.

No never locked. I think I would feel uncomfortable actually. I am in and out to garden garage etc anyway.

I do as we are in a rather isolated spot. Dh complains if he is in garden and I lock back door but as I tell him, he could be the mad axeman for all I know.?

I live in a very safe area and feel safe, head of a cul de sac and it is only a seldom-used turning space, no car comes past and no pedestrian. However the first thing I did when I moved was to go and but a good bolt for my tall garden gate and I fixed that half way down so it could not easily be opened from the outside

I keep my front door locked but the chain is never on, living on my own, my AC might need access with a key. I do forget to lock the back door sometimes when I go to bed, it does not worry me, access to the garden which is completely enclosed, 6 foot wall and fence. It is probably unlocked now but I do generally check before bed

The front door can only be opened from the outside with a key, plus there is then a set of double doors into the house. The back doors are locked but with the key in if we're home because the dogs come and go a lot. The side access has gates either end, the front is locked and the back one just bolted, again mainly due to the dogs. In the summer the back doors are mainly open but we're in the garden anyway. We are quite security conscious with a house alarm and garage alarm too, plus cctv.

Only have 1 door, which is in kitchen. .... locked at night but during day I'm either in kitchen ( door unlocked ) or I'm out ( door locked ).

The house is situated in rural location.

The front door is always locked as we never go out of that one. The back door is unlocked (and often ajar) until we go to bed

Front door can only be opened from the outside if you have a key. For holidays etc - we have security lock as well - but that is hardly necessary as we have a burglar alarm. We have a side gate, which is normally locked

At the back we have three sets of French doors. This summer they have all been open a lot. and we go about our business in house and garden, without particularly worrying about anyone climbing fences to get in when we are not looking

Although we live in a low crime rural area. Over the years we have had three break-ins and one attempted break-in, we had an attempted break-in in this house 25 years ago, but the alarm went off so they skedaddled with out coming inside.

The other three were in other houses, but apart for some costume jewellry of only sentimental value in the first one , very little has been stolen, as we do not have the kind of high value goods burglars are looking for, no expensive televsions or hifi equipment, no gaming consoles, or desirable computer equipment, no cash or expensive jewellry.

Any way it is only stuff, stuff doesn't matter. On the day our second break in happened the local police arrested a serial childkiller, who had lived in our town and abused local children as well. Somehow, after that, stuff doesn't matter.

No we don’t lock the doors.

Esmay Thu 29-Sept-22 19:34:27

Very sadly , what was once a very safe and frankly rather boring area is now increasingly dangerous .

An elderly, disabled neighbour had a knife held at her throat in the middle of the night .
She was unharmed , but it shook all of us .

You can't leave anything in the front garden .

I've known attempts made to steal things when packing up the car .

A man touting for business refused to leave the back garden . He really frightened me .

The front door is always locked .
Now I lock the back door when working in the garden and I need to have a repair done to the side gate .

I hesitate in answering the front door .
Some callers are aggressive and rude .

It's why I long to resettle in Yorkshire where we never have to lock doors , know everyone and feel really safe .

Where we live people tend to leave their doors unlocked. Burglary is virtually unheard of. Everyone leaves a box outside for parcels and with anything too big for the box the postie/ delivery man usually walks in the houseand leaves the parcel in the hall! A couple of times a year there is a big influx of outsiders for specific events and then we lock everything in sight

My doors are always locked, front and back.

Sparklefizz Thu 29-Sept-22 19:09:58

My doors are always locked. In the 70s I was married to a detective and used to leave the back door unlocked and often open as well.

One time I was bathing my daughter when a man suddenly loomed in the bathroom doorway. I hadn't heard him coming upstairs. Fortunately the man was my husband who gave me a big telling off and pointed out that he could have been anyone. From that day onwards I kept doors locked.

Daisymae Thu 29-Sept-22 19:07:08

Yes, always locked. If you have been burgled it does make you super cautious. Next door neighbour was burgled during the afternoon, although they did actually break in. Someone I know had their car stolen on Xmas Day. Just walked in, took the keys and off.

My front door is always left unlocked, day and night, just in case the emergency services need to enter. ?
But from now on, I will lock - Bluebelle mentioned Insurance being invalid if doors are not locked. Good point ..

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 29-Sept-22 19:01:24

Front door is always locked. Back door only if both of us and the GSD are out, beyond a quick toddle down the lane to the post box.

Charleygirl5 Thu 29-Sept-22 18:57:04

The only time my kitchen door is unlocked is if it is open and I am in the kitchen. If I go to the loo I close and lock the door. I never open windows.

Greyduster Thu 29-Sept-22 18:53:52

Front door is always locked whether I am in or out. I don’t use the back door. The side gate has a combi lock on it. The conservatory door into the garden is always in use.

Dottydots Thu 29-Sept-22 18:43:52

My doors are always locked when I'm on my own. My son says it is like Fort Knox.

Grannyben Thu 29-Sept-22 18:42:50

I've always kept my doors locked. I spent many years working for a solicitor and, for many years, we represented a young man who repeatedly entered peoples homes whilst they were in. When he was caught he always confessed to previous thefts where victims believed they had just list their purses etc

BlueBelle Thu 29-Sept-22 18:42:04

All main doors locked back and front, and back gate locked I don’t put the chain on at because if I was taken ill family couldn’t get in with their keys

I can’t believe in this day and age people are not locking their doors seems mad to me
I don’t live in a very high crime area but surely all insurance would be invalid if doors weren’t locked I certainly didn’t lock them in the 70 s and 80 s but certainly last 30 + years I wouldn’t dream of being in with an unlocked door

AreWeThereYet Thu 29-Sept-22 18:40:28

Sometimes we don't even lock the doors when we're away confused

Not deliberately though. Every house we've lived in we've somehow managed to leave the front door wide open overnight at some point. It was open for two days a few weeks ago when we were away - came home to find the mail on the chest in the hall. The one time someone tried to burgle us (many years ago) they went to the effort of breaking in through the back fence and breaking a window. Fortunately for us a neighbour interrupted them.

Georgesgran Thu 29-Sept-22 18:39:50

Locked in most of the day - front can’t be opened from outside without a key. When I have DD2’s dogs I’ll leave the back door open, if I’m jobbing around downstairs. Garden gates are low and could be hurdled!

avitorl Thu 29-Sept-22 18:38:46

I keep all doors locked except the door to my back garden.I leave that open so that my cat can walk in and out as she pleases. That will be kept closed soon as the weather gets colder.

NotAGran55 Thu 29-Sept-22 18:38:42

We have 4 sets of patio doors open all summer into our back garden when it’s warm, only closed when we go to bed.
I’ve had one door open all afternoon today while I working at my desk.
