Tipping out milk in London stores

I wonder what other Gransnetters think about the incident in which two people poured out milk in Fortnum & Masons, and another store, to demonstrate their wish for everyone to convert to a vegan/plant-based diet.

I do not criticise their wish for everyone to become vegan, but I do wonder if they are using the right methods of persuasion.

Some little children have parents that can't afford milk and cereal so go to school hungry. And these idiots are throwing it away.
Nobody should be pressured to eat a certain diet unless its for medical reasons. People should be free to choose without being hounded by those that can obviously afford to waste it.
They should get an automatic prison sentence of 1 year for criminal damage first offence as should those sitting in the road.

All I meant was that if their belief is really that they think the world would be a better place if everyone were to become vegan, then who am I to criticise? Having said that, I think a bit of research into the processes used to make some vegan foods would make them change their minds.

Mollygo I absolutely agree with you. On the processed food they eat. I accidentally bought a no-duck hoisin wrap a couple of weeks ago in Sainsbury's, in mistake for the original. The first bite of hoisin flavoured slimy mush inside informed me what a dreadful mistake I had made.

I remember the young vegan activist in Australia who broke down the fences so that dingoes got in and mauled a farmer's animals, suffering long lingering deaths. She then poured blood? over herself and filmed herself in her car dramatically screaming and crying, saying the farmer had attacked her (he hadn't).
Animal lover? I think not.

Some really do not draw people to their cause, do they!

How about some positivity instead?

They've now thrown tomato soup at Van Gogh's Sunflowers in The National Gallery. angry

Hi Joy241, I think I do criticise them for wishing everyone to become a vegan. I wish I could win the lottery but don't make it difficult for those that don't. Their behaviour is tantamount to bullying those that don't agree with them. In this case, the only folk that were hurt by this were the store providers, but it was, in my opinion, just like children throwing their toys out of the cot. As you can guess, I am not a vegetarian nor a vegan but I don't protest about vegetarians or vegans not eating meat because its their choice. No matter how many protests they make, they will never change my mind. I will continue to eat meat. I do however only have soya milk simply because I prefer it and not for any commercial or climate change reasons. I just wish folk would let folk live their lives they want (within the law).

I feel for you albertina. It’s the attitude and now actions of some vegans that puts me off , besides not liking a lot of vegan multi processed products.

My younger daughter's veganism has caused a terrible rift in the family. We found her some years ago secretly trying to persuade her eight year old niece not to eat meat, fish or dairy. Up to then my Granddaughter had amazed us all with her fondness for trying different foods.

It became impossible to have a meal of any sort with her as she would point at my food and comment over and over about the reasons for not eating it. She then became a fervent conspiracy theorist, laughing at me when I spoke about the massacre of tiny children at Sandy Hook Elementary school.

Queen= quorn-I shouldn’t have given it a capital letter!

Mollygo Wed 12-Oct-22 23:32:52

No one is forced into eating Queen, though one DD did try. I could happily have dropped it in a wantonly wasteful manner, but unlike the protesting vegans I have more sense.

To quote Volver up thread
they are trying to get governments to moved towards a plant based food system because they think that is good for all of us

And if we don’t agree? As I said, I’m sick of people telling me what’s good for me. I can decide for myself.

That's fair enough. But why on earth do people on here think they are being personally targeted and bullied into eating quorn? Guilty conscience?

They have no right to enforce their views and lifestyle on anyone else.

That's not what they're doing. ?

JaneJudge Wed 12-Oct-22 21:13:19

I would be sad for the poor cow who had been milked for that milk

I feel the same when i buy meat/eggs. An animal has give me that food so it has to be eaten. It should not be wasted

Coco51 Wed 12-Oct-22 21:10:43

They have no right to enforce their views and lifestyle on anyone else. I do not demand that they eat animal products therefore they should be fined for the damage and waste of precious milk - perhaps also they should make recompense to those who have to rely on charity in order to eat.

phantom12 Wed 12-Oct-22 18:56:11

It was a waste of milk and the stores would probably have had to have new carpets. A few weeks ago after going shopping we had some milk spilt in the back of our car. Even though we felt that we cleaned it thoroughly the next time we used our car it smelled as if a baby's dirty nappy had been left in it for days. We had to clean the floor and mats several times and also leave lots of air fresheners in the car. I think that those large areas of carpet would have been awful to clean and get rid of the smell.

Nantotwo Wed 12-Oct-22 18:44:44

I think the protest is more about 'animal rights'...or lack of them. A voice for those without one. How do you think livestock would protest if they were able? Would cows hold up a banner saying 'Please don't keep impregnating me so you can repeatedly steal my babies for their milk'. Or a sheep say 'Please don't make me chase the big man who has stolen my newborn baby for you to eat - I haven't even been able to clean the afterbirth from him yet ' I think they are passionate about stopping the suffering of animals but don't agree with some of the methods they use including this one. I am a vegan, I am not an activist type, I just take care of my own conscience.

LJP1 Wed 12-Oct-22 18:44:41

Milk from extensively farmed, grass fed cows locally, is the 'greenest'. Many of the veg substitute milks, e.g . almond, contribute much more CO2 to climate warming. Intensively farmed cows are also terrible emitters.

Neolithic farming (extensive) did not cause global warming!

Veganism tends to result in B12 & iron deficiency after a couple of years and the replacement supplements have a high carbon footprint.

Philippa111 Wed 12-Oct-22 17:55:30

I agree that we all need to be much more aware of our carbon footprint, and think of the future for our grandkids, and some foods are better than others, but this is not the way forward at all. In fact it just gets people's backs up and then they dig in their heels. Nobody likes to be told what to do by the 'hollier that thou'.

Lemsip, I saw it and was totally disgusted. I so admired that old man valiantly walking in his garden raising money for the NHS. What right did she have to perform such an odious act. I am a firm believer in freedom of speech but I hate acts of mindless vandalism. I read that her parents were disgusted by her behaviour.

Direne3 Wed 12-Oct-22 17:26:45

Btw, from age 7 lived in farming area with all that that involved but think I was latent vegetarian from that time but loved the taste of meat, so it wasn't until the point nearly 25yrs later when I watched my beloved cat walk across the room and realised that it was just like eating him, that I finally cracked. Mark you, I did become piscatarian for a few years, until the nightly sight of fish in their death throes shown on local Devon tv that my conscience forced me into reluctantly giving up the wild smoked salmon that I had so enjoyed at Christmas. grin To each his own, ladies.

Mollygo Wed 12-Oct-22 16:59:25

Volver’s right. No one is being coerced. We are simply being treated to an example of stupid behaviour and wanton waste by a group who appear to think that stupid behaviour and wanton waste will convince people that they are right.
Line up all those who think stupid behaviour and wanton waste is the way to do it.

Direne3 Wed 12-Oct-22 16:53:21

I quite agree BlueBelle. I've been a veggie for 40+ years - long before the current Vegan Brigade formed. Over time I've noted that we are a gentler breed, often more likely to apologise to hosts than agressively try to force our own views on others.

Oats and nuts do not produce milk. These non milk products are highly processed in factories and use considerable amounts of energy to produce.

I agree.

We don't buy milk substitutes, serve no purpose, to us.

Water, juice, wine, veg broth typically work well.
