When's the last time you cooked roast beef?

Was watching 'Maxine' on TV the other night and in it she says how they had just cooked Roast Beef and all the trimmings.
This was set about 2002 or thereabouts (I think)
And I realised wirh a bit of a shock that it's a been a couple of years since I bought a decent joint of beef to roast
I tend to go mainly for Chicken or pork these days.
Probably because it's cheaper.
And yet back in the day when I had a young family and not much money we ate roast beef regularly.
I think most young families wouldn't be able to afford it now.
What with the astronomical increase in food prices, it was shocking to realise how much life has changed since 2002.

I do a roast dinner every other Sunday, our grandchildren come for the weekend twice a month, when they're here I alternate between beef and chicken, my husband doesn't like roast pork although I do! lamb is so expensive and we aren't keen on it cold the next day. However, I'm buying beef less often as the children prefer roast chicken as long as that comes with Yorkshire puddings.

This thread takes me back to my childhood when beef (usually a pot roast) or lamb (rolled shoulder) would be routine Sunday fare but chicken only appeared on the menu on very special occasions. How times change!

I rarely cook beef, as I don`t have much success with it. Pork, lamb, chicken, turkey, no problem, but beef rarely cooks to my satisfaction.

So long ago that I could not possibly tell you the date.

I suspect it was sometime in 1975 and my mother was footing the bill!

I pot roasted silverside in 2002 - I remember that as it was one of the first times my father visited us after my mother's death. It was a dish he was partial to, otherwise I would never have chosen it.

We eat roast pork three or four times a year, roast lamb at Easter and roast chicken or duck perhaps once a year.

There is no way at today's prices we could eat a roast once a week, as we did in my childhood.

Common meat dishes are boiled or fried streaky pork, bacon fried or boiled, a small amount of chicken fried or post roasted, sausages, mince, meat-balls and on special occasions if we don't have a roast boiled ham.

My family (I only usually do a roast for them) prefer a pork joint with crackling or chicken with stuffing.
I do like beef but wouldn't buy it for myself. If I was buying it, it would be brisket, pot roasted.
They like my beef stew.
I'm very happy they told me they don't particularly like turkey! Although I do, it will definitely save money this year. I'm happy with chicken and gammon.

I do a roast every Sunday when my sons family come for dinner ,its the one thing I can guarantee they will all eat .I'm not much of a meat eater but I will have some lamb with a red wine and redcurrant sauce.I dont eat any fowl or pork so those days I make sure there's a good potato dish with veg and I'm happy with that .

It's been a very long time since I did a roast beef. A few years, anyway. Beef has gotten very expensive, and a good size rib roast is almost the price of a week's groceries.

We quite often do roast chicken. I tend to do mashed potatoes though, hardly ever roasted.

I agree - you need a large joint to have a decent tasting roast and for two of us, it’s not worth it. It’s also a heck of a slog, doing a Sunday roast and I’m just prepared to go through all that any more!

I never cook it. My husband does though - we had roast beef last week with the daughters & grandchildren and we're having it today, even though it's just the two of us. I wouldn't even be sure which bit of the cow to buy!

Last Christmas. I actually sliced up the extra and put it in the freezer to use later as I live on my own. I have beef when I go out with friends for lunch. A hotel near us does a roast lunch with pudding for £14 and I always go for the roast beef followed by warm apple tart with custard. A lovely treat once in a while.

Don’t do very often it’s usually chicken or pork for us but have the family coming today so cooking roast beef today for 7 of us it is expensive for a decent size joint however is is the DGSs favourite and a rare treat ! and cheaper than us all going out to eat

We have Roast Beef fairly regularly. We have it "rare" in the first roasting. DH has the cooked through bits and I have the rare bits. The next day, we have it with homemade chips. I have mine cold because I want it rare, DH warms his because he likes it cooked through. The following day we have it in a stir fry or casserole. Depending on the size of it, we might also get sandwiches out of it.
We might not have Roast Beef again for a month or two but when we do, we thoroughly enjoy it. The rest of the time we live on chicken/fish/pork.

About 30 years ago, just before we became vegetarian. Never looked back. I do cook a lovely roast dinner sometimes in the colder months though - all the trimmings and a nice Quorn roast.

A goodly number of years! Having cooked mostly for two people, a beef joint is too small to be economical - so rarely bought. In common with an earlier poster - I might choose Roast Beef when eating out - or as a guest at my sister's dinner table (she regularly cooks for larger family and friends).

I stopped eating meat, fish etc 31 years go when I became vegetarian. Decided to go vegan about 9 years ago so a very long time for me.

Quite regularly ….. always a sirloin roast or a ribeye roast. Having a 4 rib of beef for Christmas Day plus a Turkey crown for those that want Turkey meat. Hate it myself.

We're vegan.

Only cook proper meat when our daughters and their families will be over. They request chicken or lamb roasts mostly. I don't make roasties very well, they usually have to live with mash, polenta, noodles or rice instead.

It was so long ago, that Mr. 1968 & I can't remember. (Maybe a Christmas, about ten years ago, when it was just the two of us.) We both love a proper roast beef Sunday dinner when we go out. Just can't be bothered to make it at home!

Think it was a year or two since posting a beef joint! My daughter invites us once a month when she does one - beautifully done, too. Dare I say it - with all the trimmings!

Remembering back when I was young, Mum roasted an aitch-bone of beef every Sunday which was served alongside her wonderful roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. Then cold on Mondays, minced and made into cottage pie on Tuesdays plus sandwiches for Dad's packed lunch most of the week. I've never roasted a beef joint myself, even though I'm now nearer 80 than 70 as I prefer lamb or pork.

It's just DH and me so although I do cook roasties they are usually alongside something like a thick lamb loin chop (our local Tesco has a great fresh meat counter) or duck/chicken legs.

I'm not sure if I've ever cooked roast beef. I used to do roast lamb fairly regularly when there were 4 of us and a roast chicken fairly often too which left enough on the carcass for sandwiches. Now I buy chicken legs to roast as they are good value and I prefer leg to breast. If I do lamb I buy boned and rolled breast and slice into three or four portions so one is eaten fresh and the others frozen in the gravy to reheat in the microwave. If I roast pork it is always belly. My daughter is a big fan of chicken though, so we eat that most often. Lamb is only for me so I have that when she is working late or away. I never cook yorkies as I was brought up by a cookery teacher who insisted on the 'correct' accompaniments so they are only for beef, which I don't do! I did do yorkies when my kids were young but always bought little frozen ones ready to roast. So maybe I did cook beef occasionally back then but I can't remember. Beef for me now means mince or the occasional steak for a treat if it's on offer!
