didn't beef used to be cheaper than chicken though?
I cooked beef last week but it was a brisket joint in the slow cooker, they were on special in Morrisons
Powerful Stick Vacuum - recommendations please
Was watching 'Maxine' on TV the other night and in it she says how they had just cooked Roast Beef and all the trimmings.
This was set about 2002 or thereabouts (I think)
And I realised wirh a bit of a shock that it's a been a couple of years since I bought a decent joint of beef to roast
I tend to go mainly for Chicken or pork these days.
Probably because it's cheaper.
And yet back in the day when I had a young family and not much money we ate roast beef regularly.
I think most young families wouldn't be able to afford it now.
What with the astronomical increase in food prices, it was shocking to realise how much life has changed since 2002.

My DH decided to go vegetarian about three years ago so I have become vegetarian by default at home as it’s just the two of us now.
I would regularly cook a roast joint when my children were still at home. My Dad would often be invited to join us. He enjoyed traditional food, so that’s what I would cook. Roast beef or lamb, Yorkshire puddings served as a starter, braised brisket, sausage and mash, then a proper pudding, rice pudding, syrup sponge and custard, apple pie, fruit crumble. I would usually send Dad home with enough for the following day.
Growing up my mum worked for a butcher and we regularly had large roasting joints or steak.
Since my Dad died earlier this year I have no opportunity to cook this kind of food. I could cook it, but it’s a lot of work for one and I’m mostly happy to eat whatever DH cooks. It’s been easier since he started eating fish again. It’s certainly reduced our food bills not buying meat.
I really miss meat, especially roast dinners. DD is vegan so no excuse to cook a roast if she is visiting. I usually go for the meat option if eating out. I’m cooking a big dish of beef in red wine today which will go in the freezer as singe portions for me through the winter if I really don’t fancy the vegetarian option.
Last Boxing Day my son hosted a family buffet. He picked up a reduced rolled sirloin of beef from his work as the shop closed on Christmas Eve so I cooked it for him. Slightly rare, served cold and it was amazing. I also cooked a whole salmon for the event. Hopefully I might get to cook another joint this Christmas.
My grandma always said the bigger the joint the better the flavour and I really think she was right.
We are having it tonight. The last time was last Winter.
Beef and lamb seem to be very expensive these days. I hardly buy either due to all the fat cut off to make it look healthy. What’s the point in having beef without bread and beef dripping with salt, for breakfast the next morning?
I too , love buttery mashed potatoes with pickles, miniature tomatoes, sliced gherkins ( Lidl do a lovely jar of sliced gherkins in a sweet vinegar, but the jars very difficult to open) with sliced cold beef or lamb. Nice bit of horseradish with beef hot or cold but mint sauce with hot lamb but not cold. But half the mashed potatoes can be mixed with mint.
Had a beautifully cooked piece of beef at friends last Monday, but she didn’t use fresh black pepper in the mashed potatoes. White pepper just doesn’t work the same.
A large lump of bacon is under £6:00 at Lidl or Aldi. But I only like smoked bacon and they have only limited fat left on them, unlike the non smoked lumps which have too much fat for most peoples taste these days. I only ever boil bacon joints. Popping them in a saucepan to boil. You know they are done when the skin peels off easily.
Yuk, hate roast beef, and all roast dinners in fact. As a child we had a roast dinner every Sunday and remember, at the age of 9 asking if we could have something different. I got sent to bed for being cheeky. Thank goodness I married a man who also hates roast dinners, so in 54 years of marriage we have never had to endure them 😂😂😂
I don't think I've cooked roast beef since the 80's. Apart from Christmas and Easter I rarely cook a roast dinner nowadays - in fact we have very little meat at all apart from venison.
Quite recently. We usually have a roast on a Sunday, usually beef, chicken or pork as lamb has got ridiculously expensive. I particularly like beef and we have it again on Monday & Tuesday - I've a particularly tasty recipe with onions, left over potatoes ,cheese gravy & cold beef which is absolutely delicious. We've had venison today as we were lucky to be given a piece. I cooked it on a bed of roast root veg and it was so tasty. Plenty for tomorrow and Tuesday!
We eat our own pork and lamb, which of course is slaughtered here so no stress to the animal. It's delicious. we also eat a lot of chicken. Often we share game, venison and boar with friends, donated by the hunt. All very different here in France Profonde and a way of life.
I haven't had roast beef for ages, it's very expensive from a top class butcher here or absolute rubbish. Would love to have it every so often. Our neighbour has a large herd of Bio, pure bred Limousin cattle. The meat is mainly for veal - not like it is produced in UK, the calves are at foot for months and not slaughtered until 6 or 7 months, it's pink and delicious. The French are shocked at how the Brits produce veal.
I have suggested introducing an Aberdeen Angus or Hereford bull into the neighbour's herd for super beef. I got a hard stare!
Since I have been alone haven’t cooked a roast dinner. A while ago I fancied one so ordered a ready meal roast beef dinner with my Sainsburys delivery. I don’t usually have ready meals Disappointed. Had to search for the meat under piles of peas and carrots
We do have beef every now and again, but I don't buy the same big rib joints as I used to. I can't get to a Lidl at the moment, but for some years we had excellent premium matured roast joints from there. Now I sometimes buy slow roast joints from various supermarkets, in a long shape that means I can use my slicer to cut them up and so finish them all up for sandwiches during the week. These joints don't look the same as a magnificent rib but certainly taste great. The regular shape means that they cook very evenly.
I'm probably showing my age, but I remember how shocked we were when the price of beef went over £1 per lb.
Today! Just cooking a joint of beef from Aldi (very reasonably priced) in air fryer. Doing veggies using steamer pan and Aunty Bessie’s yorkshires will take 4 mins in air fryer - while beef is resting. There’s only two of us so this beef joint will do two days - tomorrow with chips
. I do love a roast dinner!
About 3 weeks ago. We have roast beef about every 5-6 weeks with all the trimmings. We eat a lot of chicken, but also lamb which I love but don't often have pork.
Probably 15 years since I cooked roast beef or any meat.
Eat mainly veggie meals now👍
It’ll be sooner than I thought, we won a decent sirloin joint in the local pub meat draw earlier!
We live with my elderly father in law, we have roasts in rhythm, chicken, lamb, beef and pork - red meat white meat etc...so I had roast beef 2 weeks ago.
Last Sunday, today we had roast chicken.
Probably last time was about 1988! I'm a beef farmer's daughter but gave up meat eating around that time as farming had become very intensive and I had concerns about animal welfare. My roast is now nut or lentil and a special chestnut one at Christmas.
Vegetarian here (53 years), with an omnivorous husband, one vegan daughter, one vegetarian daughter and one omnivore. One vegetarian grandchild, one pescetarian and three omnivores (except they live mainly on pasta and cake). So not many openings for a joint of beef. Last one I did was December 30th 2019 for a larger family gathering, plus accommodating all the different diets. I have made beef wellington, which uses a very expensive cut, several times over the years. I won't cook duck or rabbit and I'm a bit queasy about lamb but I can manage pork, chicken and beef, especially if husband is looking after it.
I haven't cooked roast beef for years. I have however eaten it. Thanks to a DS who does an excellent roast, great yorkshires and wonderful roast potatoes. I trained him well!!!!
I have a piece sitting in the freezer - bought but not used from the farm in our village who sell 'from the farm door' at good prices. It's their own meat and they have pork, lamb and steak as well as good sausages!
