Low cost, month long holidays

Easy Jet have introduced all-inclusive, month long holidays. They look really nice, but they also are already very booked up.

Supposedly cheaper than staying at home! I'm not able to take off on hol for a month, due to being my DGS's childcare. A shame, because as I work online, I could easily work from Egypt or Turkey.

Ooh, I would do this in a heartbeat - but like you, I'm tied down to being my GS's childcare too. Spending a month in Turkey would be absolute bliss.

My parent used to go. on similar in the 1980’s, usually to Spain

Lots of old people escaping the winter in Britain, butI think they enjoyed it .

Look on TripAdvisor. Many good reviews but also read some of the one and two star reviews that are not so complimentary. www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g297550-d10045396-Reviews-Stella_Gardens_Resort_Spa-Makadi_Bay_Hurghada_Red_Sea_and_Sinai.html

Turkey gets very cold in winter and it rains - a lot!

Our friends spent last January in Malta, next year they’re off for two months, all inclusive, reasonable price and milder weather.

Fleur20 Tue 08-Nov-22 19:26:23

I would never go to Turkey due to its record on womens rights and human rights. They do not recognise same sex relationships.

Unless you can get a good deal on an apartment in Spain from here in the uk, the best thing to do is book a hotel for a week and then go to local agents where the Spanish will be advertising their properties.
Also, if you are in a hotel ( booked from the uk) go to other hotels and ask for their deals, it’s a lot lot cheaper.
Turkey is very cold in the winter. You have to go to Andalusia for sun.

Egypt is just as bad, if not worse. We did Xmas one year, never again.

We went on a last minute holiday to Malta 20 years ago and stayed in a hotel that was full of older people having a wonderful time.
We decided we would do the same when retired but as DD lives in Australia we go there instead.

My single friend recently passed away in the place she loved best and where she spent most of her holidays - Crete. After she retired, she spent months at a time over there. Due to red tape, she hasn’t yet been returned to the UK. 😢

Depends where you go. The weather in the Antalya area - where most of the winter holidays deals are for - can be relatively nice at that time of year.

When they retired, my in-laws spent months every winter in their campervan in southern France or northern Spain..
They ran a B&B in England but closed it in the winter months.
Eventually they sold the camper and bought a place in France where we joined them for holidays most years.
I have no desire to live in another country for months on end. It would be boring.

What an odd thing to say.

Grammaretto, I'd be bored too. I like to explore a place - then move on. I loved our adventures with our touring caravan as we never booked, so had a free choice on when to make a move. As exciting as backpacking - but in comfort with all our own things to hand. A week can be too long in some places and we rarely stayed more than ten days. I can't go anywhere now (not fair on elderly pets) and still, the risk of Covid variants puts me off. If I get ill, I'd rather be at home.

Grammaretto Wed 09-Nov-22 07:59:32

I must be like you Hetty.
Even the most beautiful places pall when you have finished exploring, read all your books etc
I did consider going to NZ where DS lives, on a 6 month grandparent visa, but I'm still considering it.
grin

Blondiescot Wed 09-Nov-22 08:23:25

I wouldn't be bored - I'd use my time as a base from which to explore different places. We love to get out and about and explore while we're on holiday anyway.

Grammaretto Wed 09-Nov-22 08:47:22

The thing is Blondiescot if you are on this package tour with easyJet which GagaJo suggested, you would be stuck.
Unless you had funds to hire a car or go on tours which would defeat the purpose of the cheap package.
The idea reminds me of when cruise ships were suggested as cheaper than the cost of a care home for the elderly but you had your sheets changed more often.
Shudder.

'Stuck' - yes, but we're pretty much stuck here at home, too, yet not so much aware of it. The days pass so quickly here - yet last longer on holiday. Everyday routines/chores, like getting up and dressed, washing up, laundry etc. seem onerous here - but effortless in new surroundings. I do miss exploring.

Hetty58 Wed 09-Nov-22 09:13:45

(I'd just love to miss the winter, though. One son spent a winter in Australia (Bondi beach) - so had three summers in a row. He said he'd never felt so happy, fit and well.)

The Canaries are one place for a long inexpensive winter holiday, we went in January a few years ago warm and very quiet, we were staying in an unused timeshare self catering, cost peanuts.

I am surprised at the negativity regarding getting away for a month in the sun.
We will be doing just that again this winter. What’s not to love about getting up in the morning to sunshine and the sound of the waves lapping on the beach below.
I happily spend my time swimming in the warm crystal clear water, lying out under the almond tree in the dense shade watching the humming birds at the feeder, walking in the cool of the early morning, tending to my little garden, walking along the beach as the fishermen come in to buy fresh seafood for dinner, attending the local market to buy freshly grown vegetables. Cooking dinner and making wonderful salads.
With lots of expats around dinner invitations are common with everyone sitting under the stars after having saluted the dying sun. There is quite a competition to see who makes the best rum punch.
Then there is the internet. I spend time on Ancestry, some Gransnet and usually keep up to date with news (might give that a miss this year). I have done courses whilst away from home and use my home library to borrow endless books online while You tube provides music so we never run out of books or new music.
Please, if you recognise the beaches don’t say. We like the peace with people we have met up with year after year. It has changed little since I first went there in the 70s.

Katie59 Wed 09-Nov-22 11:53:06

I can think of a few beach’s like that we’ve enjoyed but they didn’t qualify as “Cheap, month long”

GagaJo Wed 09-Nov-22 11:57:05

I'm surprised at people being bored. I'm not a huge holiday fan, myself, but I'd certainly love to be somewhere warmer for a month. I'm quite capable of amusing myself regardless of where I am, plus the bonus of being able to be outside more because the weather is nicer.

Personally (because I still work), I'd teach my online lessons from a shady tree with a cold drink beside me!

And yes, a rental car for when I need a change of scene.

Pie in the sky tho. Childcare duties!
