Shame on them.

I hope the culprits get the full force of the law thrown at them

These vandals have absolutely no respect for people or property or our country's history and unfortunately the Law is far too soft with them.
These thugs have no shame whatsoever and there are no words despicable enough for this particular disgusting act on a war memorial.

My father was a hard (and often violent) man but he never spoke about the war. I only knew from my mother that the ship he was on was torpedoed twice and had to be abandoned.

I also had another much loved family friend who would never speak about his experiences in the war. He was wounded such that he never recovered his full health and died in his late 40s.

I hope the police give this the attention it deserves and hang them out to dry.

There are calls for tougher laws on sentencing for vandalism of War Memorials in Scotland as there are in England and Wales.

Perhaps 5 years National Service might be an idea!

It's not an infrequent occurrence unfortunately.

The Daily Express has just blamed Sturgeon and the SNP.

And why would they think that was possible? I can’t see their reasoning. .
It’s not even as if either NS or the SNP claim to represent all those who died or are commemorated on the war memorial.

Purposeful vandalism.

Disgusting whether they were "daft laddies" or not. As a former primary teacher I know children are taught about the significance of poppy wreaths so I don't think there is any excuse.

This is terrible.
Whoever they were have no clue.

Yes, LucyW primary schoolchildren were participating at both Friday and Sunday services and are fully aware. They are eager to buy poppies, wristbands, slap bands etc.
The pupils at DGD's primary school each make a cross dedicated to a person in their village whose name is on their War Memorial and name them as they lay the cross.

War is shocking as we are witnessing yet again.
Defence is not the same as aggression.
I believe there are only two years since 1945 where there was no conflict in the world.

I would think that mindless, stupid vandals did this.

It'll be drunks passing late at night or very early in the morning .We've had a spate of fire raising here ,not the cenotaph though .But cars and hedges and bins and its quite worrying .Theres been little teenage crime here for years ,we just dont see groups of teenagers on corners anymore so this fireraising is very unwelcome .Its always very late at night ,a local church that has been unused for a few years was destroyed by fire and had to be demolished.
They look for easy targets

Obviously they've not been taught that well. Disgusting behaviour.

My dh was in the Royal Navy. My stepson in the RAF. I am appalled.I could weep.

The defaced war memorial was found at 5am not actually set on fire then. I suppose an early morning worker found it on their way in to the city chambers

Yammy Wed 16-Nov-22 14:06:12

I'm not making excuses for anyone who defaces a war memorial to any war. it is there to remember the men and women who gave their lives to give us the freedom that allows us to do such appalling things.
I don't think the younger generation who have never had relations in wars really understand what it means, even Iraqi and Afghanistan have had little impact on some.

We were talking about the programme on BBC on a Sunday evening about the forming of the SAS. Someone under 50 said they found it very boring and improbable until I showed them on my computer two of my parent's friends examining a burned-out German tank near Tobruk. We had to explain it to them.
I'm afraid a lot of people take the attitude if it doesn't,t affect them then it is of no consequence.
They may have been daft laddies but they wouldn't be here to do it if other brave laddies had not gone to war.

4allweknow Wed 16-Nov-22 14:03:21

At 5 am apparently. What kind of person is about at that time looking to deface such a monument. If caught, sadly they will just get a tap on the wrist.

grandtanteJE65 Wed 16-Nov-22 13:56:24

One of my great-uncles died in the Great War. His twin brother survived living with the effects of mustard gas for the rest of his life. I loved that uncle and my grandfather who also was in France and Belgium from 1914-18.

My father and his sister served in the second world war, as did those of their paternal uncles who were under forty.

So this hits hard.

I can understand, though not approve of pacifists attacking military installations, but why anyone would want to disfigure a war memorial beats me.

Namsnanny Wed 16-Nov-22 12:18:26

There has been vandalism to war mem. In all 4 countries of the UK.
That seems unusual.

Mamma7 Wed 16-Nov-22 12:17:32

Beggars belief

FleurBaladine Wed 16-Nov-22 11:54:10

Awful.

Scottiebear Wed 16-Nov-22 11:51:06

It's very sad that I'm getting to the point where very little shocks me. But it's truly appalling. There should be stiff sentences for that kind of behaviour. National service perhaps.

hulahoop Wed 16-Nov-22 11:37:01

Words fail me ,I hope of caught they get shamed whatever their age .

Nannashirlz Wed 16-Nov-22 11:31:08

As an ex military wife and also a military mum my son and my daughter inlaw both serving military things like this are totally disgusting and disrespectful. Anyone who does stuff like that are just like them that displayed the flag over Churchill on Saturday totally disrespectful

Aveline Mon 14-Nov-22 20:00:59

It made an impression on me. Brought it all to life. That school project will have done that too. Well done teachers!

Aveline Mon 14-Nov-22 19:59:53

A good project for that school. I remember my Grandad telling me about his time in the trenches. He only told me about the interesting things like how they decorated the dug outs or about the horses. Like so many he didn't talk about the unspeakably hellish sights and sounds he must have experienced.

volver Mon 14-Nov-22 19:34:25

Aveline

I suspect so too volver. It's on my mind as I had just read this sad Sassoon poem about just such a daft lad.

That's a perfect poem Aveline, thank you for posting that.

I don't think this was a "pure evil" act. I don't think it was hateful or any of that. I do think they were probably just daft laddies doing for a "laugh". I could be wrong, we'll see.

In contrast, the children of a primary school near us researched all the men who are commemorated on the local war memorial and made a poppy for each of them. The poppies were then mounted on the gates/walls the actual houses the men had lived in.

Alioop Mon 14-Nov-22 19:15:05

There has been so much on the TV from last week about this special time of remembering so they are bound to know the significance of it all and to show such disrespect and hatefulness is unbelievable.
