It wasn’t a made up title Yammy, there had been previous DofE’s.

And I don’t think Philip ever lost his Prince title. He was always Prince Philip, the DofE.

If the Queen spoke about him, she always referred to him as ‘Prince Philip’.

Regarding the carrying-on of the titles after the Duke dies, e.g. the Duke of Kent, I think the son can use the title, but loses the ‘HRH’ before it. The ‘HRH’ is only for the children or grandchildren of the monarch.

(I find all this royal stuff very interesting, I realise many on GN don’t).

Thanks, Calendar girl, I really did not know. I find it interesting as well.
I suppose calling him a Duke was really demoting him, he was born HRH prince Philip of Greece. thanks

Who is Charlotte?

FannyCornforth Tue 29-Nov-22 13:58:20

Ah, the song about Rigsby’s cat

Anniebach Tue 29-Nov-22 13:44:56

Possibly it isn’t true

Lilypops Tue 29-Nov-22 13:19:52

Why can’t Charlotte be Duchess of Cambridge now that Catherine doesn’t use the title on becoming Princess of Wales,
It’s a shame that Edward and Sophie can’t be given the title, she was close to the queen according to the press ,

All rather Ruritanian if you ask me. Which you haven't of course. It is irrelevant to me

đŸŽŒ It means nothing to me.... đŸŽ”

đŸŽ¶ Ahhhh, Vienna.... đŸŽ”

How appropriate!

(Nobody laughed last time, I'm having another go.)

They are all made up titles

Of course they are.
A new made up one Baron of Carrickfergus, for William created in 2011.
It's all a nonsense.

I'm in Edinburgh. Just. Not. Bothered.

I'm just outside. And also not bothered - in the slightest.

I stand corrected Parsley

Have just looked it up.

Yes, he was Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, but gave up those titles on his marriage, when he was made DofE.

The Queen made him a Prince again in 1957.

I am not going to believe this is true until/ unless an official announcement is made.
The title of Duke of Edinburgh should go to Edward, and presumably that would make Sophie the Duchess. It was what the Queen wanted.
I agree that Charlotte does not need this title. She should eventually become Princess Royal when her father becomes King. In my opinion.

Philip was designated Duke of Edinburgh on marriage in 1947 but was not given the title of Prince until 1957.

I thought he was born a Prince?
Prince of Denmark and Greece

Do the people of Edinburgh get a say?

maddyone Tue 29-Nov-22 11:33:18

I’ve been to Schonbrunn Palace too. And eaten Sachertorte in Vienna at the Sacher Hotel. Plus eaten it at the Sacher Cafe in Innsbruck. It’s yummy.

Cold in winter there, obviously!!

They are all made up titles. The title "Duke of Edinburgh" was invented by George I for his son, maybe as a way of trying to subdue those rebellious Scots, instead of crushing them. That's gone well.

Elegran Tue 29-Nov-22 10:54:00

As dukedoms have no link with places, and haven't had for a thousand years or so, that isn't really relevant. Anyhow, better a gallus wee besom than some of the possible candidates.

paddyann54 Tue 29-Nov-22 10:46:53

Does Edinburgh WANT a replacement duke/Duchess? I know folk were livid in my area when they thought we were having Harry as EARL of Dumbarton....this is a very socialist area it just didn't sit well.
Anyway just because Edinburgh had one before shouldn't mean they have to have another .

Anniebach Tue 29-Nov-22 10:36:37

Can the title be passed from a wife to husband

Elegran Tue 29-Nov-22 10:31:28

I have had three thoughts on why Charles is thinking of doing that (if it is true)

1) He suggested it to Edward, who turned it down.

2) If he made one of the other male royals Duke of Edinburgh, another of them would think he should have the Dukedom and sulk.

3) He can see The late D of E reflected in Charlotte's personality, and making her Duchess of Edinburgh would both continue the late D of E's "robustness" and commonsense, and prevent any of the men from expecting to get the title.

BTW, I think it was Volver who asked whether Charlotte's future husband would become D of E. I don't think he would. A duchess in her own right doesn't need a duke, any more than a queen in her own right needs a king (nor does a fish need a bicycle)

pascal30 Tue 29-Nov-22 10:30:24

Doesn't Charles have more pressing issues to deal with.. duh like climate change... this is so irrelevent nowdays
