She's opened and is fully funding a place for female victims of sexual violence. It's called Beira's place (Beira is Scottish goddess of the darkness ie winter). They'll provide whatever support and help that these women actually need. JK's great!

There’s a few articles on Twitter about this fantastic news, this is the one I enjoyed the most. It’s by Suzanne Moore and yes, it made me shed a tear too.

Well done JKR.
Listening to the explanations I heard that one reason she’s set it up is so it isn’t reliant on political views.
It’s such a shame it’s necessary in order to ensure support for females by females.
I’ll wait for the cries of discrimination. I’ll probably wait even longer for the news that TW have set up and funded one.

Aveline Mon 12-Dec-22 14:20:36

It's JK's reaction to the existing one which has a transwoman as CEO and who insists that the poor abused women be re educated re their attitudes to gender. As if life isn't hard enough already for them.

VioletSky Mon 12-Dec-22 14:34:22

I am glad there will be more services for women.

Just saddened that it has become another anti trans activists thread

And saddened that a private individual would need to step in where public funding should be.

I still give to as I have used a refuge but not enough people do and many services are struggling.

Refuge do a scheme that donates presents and parcels if anyone would like to help?

Lathyrus Mon 12-Dec-22 14:42:13

Also very sad Violetsky that trans activists have already peppered JKRs Twitter feed with negative comments, including one that tells people the new centre is not a safe place.

Any ideas why they would do this?

Rosie51 Mon 12-Dec-22 14:44:46

VS transwomen such as India Willoughby are already denigrating this new provision as being 'transphobic'.

And saddened that a private individual would need to step in where public funding should be
public funding refuses to supply exclusively female only services so it very sadly does fall on an extraordinarily generous individual to ensure such a service can exist.

VioletSky Mon 12-Dec-22 14:44:58

No idea why people spread hate and misinformation...

I call it out when I see it, that's why I'm not popular on these threads

Lathyrus Mon 12-Dec-22 14:46:55

Bit like Nelson then😬

Rosie51 Mon 12-Dec-22 14:47:36

Was typing while you posted Lathyrus yes amazing isn't it, no female only provision is ever acceptable, and yet other exclusive provision for interested groups is perfectly acceptable.

NotSpaghetti Mon 12-Dec-22 14:49:24

Glorianny and others - why do we need to know who has funded it like this? I understand she wants to do this but we don't need to know it's her project, surely.

I may have missed something obvious here?....

Rosie51 Mon 12-Dec-22 14:56:34

NotSpaghetti Why would we not be told who was behind this project? There'd be questions about where the funding was coming from and why it is an exclusively female space. Are you suggesting J K Rowling should have remained secretive about it, which when then discovered would be used as another stick to beat her with?

VioletSky Mon 12-Dec-22 15:03:17

Lots and lots of people give to refuges

But I lit a candle on trans remembrance day and had like 17 spiteful comments saying I was "virtue signalling".

I guess all those women who give monthly to refuges can't hold a candle to JK despite actually being the reason we have as many refuges as we do right now

Also people are weird

Lathyrus Mon 12-Dec-22 15:08:04

And there it is……

Rosie51 Mon 12-Dec-22 15:21:36

J K Rowling does something of immense generosity (and yes I know she can afford it!) and still there has to be a nasty sideswipe at her. Truly some people are very weird.

VioletSky Mon 12-Dec-22 15:23:19

No, sideswipe at those who made the spiteful virtue signalling comments... just so we are clear

Anyway, must not forget my list

This sounds clear.
And very spiteful indeed.

This is spiteful. No ifs, buts, virtue signalling, just nasty.

This wasn't a sideswipe at JKR? Certainly reads like one to me. You could have just said that all the women who give monthly to refuges are the reason we have so many. No need for the reference to JKR, your dislike of her has been demonstrated on previous threads.

Glorianny Mon 12-Dec-22 16:07:49

I think asking why JKR has to be quite so public about it is a reasonable question.Wasn't public giving debated on another thread? And didn't someone quote the bible something about giving without exhibition or broadcasting it?
I don't like JKR I never have. The HP books are her greatest achievement and much in them was taken from other writers. Nothing else of hers I've read has impressed me

VioletSky Mon 12-Dec-22 16:18:01

I don't like her either

I'm glad she has provided a service for women and even if it hasn't come from a completely wholesome place it will help those women, for as long as it runs

Mollygo Mon 12-Dec-22 16:21:49

VS alert
This probably looks like vs, but I’m truly grateful that you (VS) have never needed a refuge run by females for females and I hope you never do.
I’m equally grateful to JKR for the chance that, should I ever need one there will be such a refuge for me, or my daughters or my granddaughters or my friends.
Why has JKR had to make this public?
Is she virtue signalling. Or is it possibly because females in need of a male-free refuge can no longer trust that the existing ones won’t give them that security?
Are you saying, VS, that females are not entitled to male free spaces?

Rosie51 Mon 12-Dec-22 16:22:27

Is there a way to be 'public' but not 'quite so public'? You truthfully don't think it would eventually be discovered who had started this new female only provision? Can you honestly say there wouldn't have been any sort of 'backlash' when said discovery was made, accusing her of all sorts of motivations?
You are, of course, entitled to not like JKR or her works. I'm rather surprised you've read her other works given you decry the Harry Potter books so much. I'm afraid I tend not to read more of authors whose previous work I've not liked.

In what way is wanting to provide a service to women who want to be assured this is a female only space not wholesome?
Do you approve of this provision VS? I'm not sure whether it would meet your 'wholesome' test.

Lathyrus Mon 12-Dec-22 16:30:20

Oh wow. Not only did the Twitter anti say the refuge wouldn’t be a safe place, but now we have a poster saying “it doesn’t come from a completely wholesome place”.

Not safe, not wholesome.

What else I wonder in an attempt to bring down this female safe space.

I think we all know why.

Aveline Mon 12-Dec-22 16:43:51

I'm just so glad we have such a strong and effective woman to be a figurehead and role model for us women. I'm not a fan of her books but I'm a big fan of this and all her other work to help others.
