She's opened and is fully funding a place for female victims of sexual violence. It's called Beira's place (Beira is Scottish goddess of the darkness ie winter). They'll provide whatever support and help that these women actually need. JK's great!

Aveline. Violence from men to women has happened since biblical times so I doubt it will stop now.

Glorianny you don’t appear to have responded to my post of Monday at 21.41 where you imply JKR plagiarises from other authors. What evidence do you have ?

‘ The HP books are her greatest achievement and much in them was taken from other writers.’

I have absolutely nothing against trans women , nothing, and firmly believe there must be places they can access when suffering abuse. But there MUST be places for biologically born women too, that are safe ‘ men free’ spaces, and all power to JK Rowling for facilitating this.

MaryXYX Wed 14-Dec-22 11:43:37

The whole point of JKR's venture is that it is NOT for women - it's for some women. She wants to exclude trans-women, although how would they know? Possibly the next development would be to exclude non-whites.

Nanna58 Wed 14-Dec-22 11:48:21

MaryXYX what a ridiculous analogy ! Read my post more carefully, a safe space for trans women would be described as for ‘ some women’ - but surely the aim is that everyone has access to the support they need, and in a place they feel safe for them.

Lathyrus Wed 14-Dec-22 11:48:47

It’s for females who are too afraid to access help from places where males have access to them, because they have experienced male abuse.

Why would you want to deny them that help, Mary. What reason could you possibly give?

Nanna58: Read her manifesto - it's for women provided they are not trans-women. That is not "all women". Existing provision is for "all women".

It isn't unreasonable for any woman to want a respite from having men around, to not want them in their changing rooms, toilets and other safe spaces.

I wonder how many men for example would want women is their toilet facilities and changing rooms at the swimming baths of gym for example.

Males don't have access to the existing places, so your comment is irrelevant.

Lathyrus Wed 14-Dec-22 12:02:52

So why would you deny help to women who are too frightened to access places where males have access?

Lathyrus Wed 14-Dec-22 12:03:19

Umm, yes they do

Smileless2012 Wed 14-Dec-22 12:03:23

Trans women are not women MaryXXX that's the point.

Aveline Wed 14-Dec-22 12:04:34

No it isn't MaryXYX. You obviously don't understand the situation from a woman's point of view.

Lathyrus Wed 14-Dec-22 12:06:12

Or if you want to argue semantics.

Why would deny help to women who are too frightened to access places where someone who has a penis could use it as a weapon.

Bearing in mind that the reason they need help is because somebody did use a penis a weapon to harm them.

Well done JK Rowlings she is standing up for women unlike a lot of these institutions

Mimi54 Wed 14-Dec-22 12:14:11

JKR is a goddess as far as I’m concerned in all that she does to help women access single sex services, despite facing death threats from demented trolls. Having worked in services to help traumatised women and girls I never heard one ask to share the counselling spaces with men and yet that is what has happened since then. I definitely support men having their own services for those who have been abused but these should be set up and run by men not tagged onto womens crisis services. Having a trans woman in charge of a rape crisis centre is unbelievable to me and sign of the power of the trans movement which threatens to write us out of the picture by naming us ‘terfs’ or ‘cis women’ and demanding we add our pronouns . In the states they have even allowed a ‘trans woman’ wearing huge fake breasts to teach in a school.

The world has truly gone mad.

Ilovecheese Wed 14-Dec-22 12:25:37

A woman wants to help other women and somehow this is framed as a bad thing because it does not include men!

NanKate it isn't complete plagiarism so much as using ideas. Most authors may do a little but HP abounds in them
For a Witch School- Jill Murphy The Worst Witch
For the secret platform and the treatment of Harry. The Secret of Platform 13 by Eva Ibbetson
For Hogwarts- "Groosham Grange by Anthony Horowitz.
There are more but lunch is calling.

Trans women are not women MaryXXX that's the point.

How can you justify that claim? If a woman is molested because she's a woman, would you ask for a chromosome test?

Wyllow3 Wed 14-Dec-22 12:45:39

No, you'd take her in. Well, I would. No one would be allowed to stay if they transgressed as in the manner of a small number of people where examples given, and that would include born natal women.

Babsbada Wed 14-Dec-22 12:53:05

Yes. Run by women for women.
Well done JKR. She's great.

A transwoman is not a woman. Transwoman is a noun that denotes a male who wishes to identify as a woman. They remain male, and in the vast majority of cases retain male genitalia. This is one place that is for females only, and men don't like it. Well tough!

Bazza Wed 14-Dec-22 13:01:11

I couldn’t care less what her personal views are, it’s just brilliant that someone who is super rich is doing something so altruistic with their money. It’s always puzzled me why billionaires don’t appear to do more for the greater good. Perhaps some do and we just don’t hear about it.

VioletSky Wed 14-Dec-22 13:10:03

Mary

Peeps here think they know everything there is to know about human biology

Most biologists would tell you they don't yet.

The medical community treats gender dysphoria physically not mentally... but that's not enough

Trans women are women

You can waste incredible amounts of time going around in the same circle with the same people here and be warned... they get personal

GoldenAge Wed 14-Dec-22 13:16:08

Well done to JKR. Self-funding this is a mammoth task and investment. I've had many clients who have been living or have lived in women's refuges and know for certain that this provision is needed but not available in the volume required, and that there do still remain many issues surrounding transwomen being in the same space as sis women who have been abused by men. I know the arguments here and fully support the rights of transwomen whilst at the same time accepting that women in refuges are processing their own traumas and have little emotional energy left to contemplate the transwomen trauma too. We need to be accepting of the general situation that violence against women - all women - has to be acknowledged and provision made for their healing, away from men.
