Good Morning Thursday 23rd April 2026
Being cooped up in this weather is not like the lockdown.
We know life is going on outside in the world but those of us afraid to venture out because of the ice and snow are not part of it.
How are you managing for fresh food and your daily paper. Have you enough food and prescription medication.
Are you able to keep active and mentally stimulated and not suffering from boredom.
Have you had any medical emergencies that have proved difficult because of the weather.

I just said to my husband 'Remember when I was 60s chick? Now I'm talking about Lidl veg'
1. Paper online since lockdown
2. Food shopping as usual, but driving on gritted safe roads
3. Crochet, knit, play musical instruments, bake, cook, journal, stay in touch through WhatsApp, read. However, still value seeing people and miss company dreadfully if confined for any length of time
4. Fortunately no medical emergencies
Quite a bit of snow and ice where I am. Was too scared to go out at first, but having a little dog made me be a bit braver and don my mountain boots.
In the house I keep busy with hobbies and general tidying up. I have acquired a second hand portable dvd player so can watch while I cook.
I bought a shower curtain reduced to £2 in Wilko to cover the windscreen and most of the bonnet to save all that scraping. I tuck it into the front doors and hold it down with some heavy plant pots. Not elegant but serviceable.
I try to make contact every day with at least one friend, even if it's only a chat via text.
PS Oh another recent hobby has been making Christmas cards. I have enjoyed that. Never thought I would have made cards, but it’s fun. Does anyone else on here do it? By the way, I love Gransnet!
The pipe feeding my standpipe has been frozen for 8 days so can't fill tank. Using bottled water for cooking and washing. Thankfully have plenty of coal so keeping warm. I am knitting socks...on second pair. For groceries there is the village coop but have Tesco click and collect on Wednesday. One has to get on with life. Biggest problem is pipes frozen at toilet cassette emptying point. I bought another cassette on Amazon to get round that problem...delivered next day.
Tbf it did sound a bit 'questionarre-y' when i read OP. It felt like having a load of questions fired at you one after other about how we are coping with weather etc not like a little chat with friends-so i can see where Hazel 193 was coming from.
Kate1949-😁
Thanks for heads up on cheap veg ladies.😋😉
I find it terrible with this weather because i have trouble with my knees and hips. When we had covid we saw no one for 3 weeks and i came out of hospital lived on what we got in the house. My cupboards where bare but now it is expensive to fill up we are not on any benifits.
Up here we still have a lot of snow on the ground, so we have not had a postal delivery since before the snow started, so no chance of a supermarket delivery either. I always have plenty in the freezer to keep us going for a week or two. We are not attempting to go out till Monday. Half of my Christmas cards and GSs birthday card have not been posted. I still have some presents to buy for delivery on Monday. I am missing a carol concert which I was looking forward to. My main problem is that the solar panels haven't been working because they were covered in snow.
Some of us have no option. Our shift pattern pays no heed to weather forecast. My profession is not on strike. We carry on regardless. I drove to and from work yesterday in road conditions that were not ideal. There were people ski-ing past my house yesterday! My initial reaction, after clearing snow from the drive so I could get out to go to work, was get real, why not go and spend your time clearing snow from some old person's drive or a public pavement. PS. The drive home last night was no picnic!
Wrapping up warm and going for walks as often as I can. I have also been doing some weaving. Also crocheted a cat blanket for a cat charity Christmas box. I am currently knitting myself a beanie hat - can’t do much else at the moment because I have covid 😱.
No snow here but its quite cold.
Today I'll be making up the beds for DGC and daughter who are coming to stay tomorrow until after Xmas. DS coming Xmas eve too, so it's housework day and clear the washing. Xmas tree is up with just lights on ready for DGC to decorate with OH when they arrive
I have wrapped presents sorted cupboards out and filled bags with warm clothing for local charity and Ukraine. We went to our DD and were surprised she is in hilly Lancashire but all the roads are gritted. We went to our GD school concert their roads like ours have not been gritted thick ice still on roads and pavements.
Well, I was doing alright until a few minutes ago. I live on my own, but am pretty self sufficient and content. Have solved today's Wordle, played Solitaire online and was gearing myself up to put up a few Christmas decorations .
Meanwhile, the CH has stayed on longer than it should and I think the batteries in my horrid digital programmable thermostat thingy need changing. I think I know how to do it but can't quite open the aperture and am frightened to use brute force in case I break it. Actually with arthritic hands my force probably just is'nt brutal enough.
And so I retired to the smallest room for obvious reasons, and to meditate about how to solve the thermostat problem, and I unwittingly did something drastic to my very newly installed soft closing toilet seat, so it' s no longer attached to the loo!
I took the advice of my plumber re which model to have, and rather like the thermostat I now cannot fathom out what has happened. I did shrink back a bit when he'd installed the seat and then handed me an Allen key and one of those things that you use to get air out of radiators, telling me what to do if the fitting got loose, but didn't understand a word of what he was saying, Just hoped it wouldn't happen!
This is the frustrating part of living on one's' own. I'm reasonably intelligent about most things but have an innate inability to translate instructions on paper in 2D into a 3D object.
Finished getting the guest bedroom ready for a visitor over Christmas. DH is in the kitchen recovering the seats of two dining chair which were a tad worn. Just made scrambled egg on toast for lunch ( we have it early as no breakfast) Then a sit down for us both I think. Raining heavily on and off so no walk today.
I’ve managed a quick pre Xmas break to son no:2 in Jersey, but it was a struggle to get here. Train tickets wouldn’t print out and no one was in the ticket office. Then despite saying online that trains wee running, all of a sudden they were cancelled. DD whisked me up to Gatwick as the main roads were clear, I boarded the plane as scheduled, but an hour later we were still on the runway having the wings de-iced ! We’ve had snow over here but it’s not settled. I fly back tonight to our home that’s like a building site ! Having new kitchen plus extension, but the builders ill as well as being hampered by the snow, so there’ll be no progress over Xmas. DD text last night to say we had no electric in the house too ! Am sure we’ll survive and get thro it all as best we can.
I don’t know how I’d manage without Mr. B. Several grans have lost their husbands and loved ones over the past two years and I do wonder how they’re coping.
No snow here yet but icy road & pavement stops me going out. Had both hips replaced, the left one twice after slipping in rain getting on a bus so do not fancy that again! Too cold with the icy breeze off of the sea for a walk plus the icy pavement & my drive is icy till around 1pm then by 3pm iced over again! So it is just like Lockdown all over again except for the youngsters who dont worry about broken bones as they can keep their balance, walking by my window. Never mind though it will soon be time to moan about the heat again if I live that long! Another cuppa & watch the Grinch (Jim Carrey version) as I do every Christmas. Soon be over & we will find something else to moan about 🤣
I sympathise rowyn and I have a DH! He thinks he’s really good at DIY…..😳🙄🫣
The snow and ice are starting to thaw here thank goodness 😅! DDog and I delivered the las5 few cards for our neighbours earlier and it was decidedly less slippery than a couple of day ago.
I’m very well stocked up food-wise, I probably have 6 weeks of food in the freezer and cupboards. Apart from milk and bread, and it becoming a bit boring, we certainly wouldn’t starve.
I think I have a siege mentality with a lot of things!
Christmas is going to be very quiet here, we really don’t mind at all!
Life has gone on as normal until today. Lots of dangerous black ice in our village, so not leaving home at all today.
rowyn look on YouTube for info on how to reattach toilet seat and sort programmable heating device. Good luck.
A bit warmer here now. A balmy 1C. Throwing caution to the wind -
no long johns under trousers today!
Newspaper read from cover to cover and crossword and other puzzles done. Complicated pill regime to one cat done and compensation provided to other cat who feels he's missing out. Cards for neighbours written and delivered. Lunch with latest 'The Oldie' next then TV until time for scheduled phone chat with another Gran. It's all go!
