Foods you can no longer eat

Went to a lovely Italian restaurant last week and had the best fettuccine boscaiola I have ever eaten.
Now, it’s been a few years since I’ve eaten this rather rich dish but all my life I’ve had a cast iron stomach and nothing upset it.
Not any more. Had reflux for hours, really badly. I do have a hiatus hernia now so should have known better.
What foods can you no longer eat? What upsets your stomach as you have aged?

I don’t like chilies anymore and I find the spicy curries too hard to digest. I used to like hot food but now I can manage a Thai red curry just about but not the green curries. I can still scoff lots of chocolate though.

So far, lucky me I can eat whatever I like!
More than likely that helped me to gain too much weight this past couple of years as I denied myself nothing of what I fancied.
Now?
I’m on a diet .... 😁

Like others I have a HH and can't tolerate onions or leeks. Also shop bought pies/pastry plus foods with lots of fat content and anything fried.

Like some others here, I cannot tolerate some acidic foods that I used to enjoy, especially grapefruit and kiwi fruit as they give me painful stomach cramps. Equally, I can no longer tolerate spicy food as I, not only get indigestion, but gum disease means a painful mouth. I can drink cold milk but hot milk makes me nauseous.
The worst thing for me is fizzy drinks, including sparkling water and prosecco. These give me severe indigestion.

Too much fat. I miss fish shop fish and chips the most.

I have IBS and reflux

I've never been allergic to any foods but I have a tolerance level. Adding stress moves that tolerance level and so does aging.

So even where I've naturally are less of things that upset me, over time it takes less to upset me.

Peanuts are a no for me now
Any kind of longlife bread product
Shop bought cakes
Processed food
And tea is starting to cause issues sad

I would love to say it's helped my weight but nope!

I sometimes get reflux completely out of the blue. I tend to just ignore it as when I next eat the same food invariably nothing happens at all.

Has this happened to anyone else?
I foolishly at some dark chocolate 1 hour before bedtime around 4 weeks ago.
That night, I woke up with what felt like a wobbly heart beat. My GP kindly checked this the following week and confirmed all was OK.
But, I've since developed a bitter taste in my mouth in the morning, and nausea, which lasts until lunchtime.
Gaviscon didn't help, and my daughter gave me a few Panteprozol, which stopped all symptoms thankfully.
My GP has refused to prescribe them, I think maybe based on cost, so I have Lansoprazole 15mg. 2 days in I am getting symptoms again. I don't think these are as effective as Panteprozol.
Could chocolate have started this off?
I was fine before, and could kick myself for having it..dark chocolate 85%

I used to have an ‘iron stomach’ - not any more. I am just getting over a bout of ‘food poisoning’ - caused by an unhygienically prepared salad from a very popular store. I’m almost sure that was what caused it.

Pickled onions which I used to love, and still do but daren’t eat more than a finger nail size. Onion soup means I am not nice to be near.

I have developed alcohol intolerance. Even just a tiny amount will bring on violent palpitations.

I miss the Friday night g&t and I no longer use wine in cooking.

Christmas cake was a big disappointment as I used to ‘feed’ it with Cointreau and it doesn’t taste the same without.

You might find it better to start a new thread Gilly33, because subsequent posters have added to the original 2022 thread, rather than in reply to your post.

Dark chocolate is terrible for my reflux, can be up in the night with this suffering a bad attack which can make me feel wobbly and as if I have palpitations, it can also make me vomit.
It can set off a migraine as well.
So I can’t eat it. Ever. Milk chocolate is better but too much can also set off my reflux.
The worst culprit is soup, any kind really.
Have to double up on omeprazole if I have it. Curry and anything with chili’s in it are a no no. Fizzy drinks too.

Like Lucy Locket, I take Gaviscon. My Doctor prescribed it because I suffer Gastric Reflux.

I am so relieved to read the replies. I am trying to work out what is really upsetting my gut. Could be porridge, coffee, milk? The usual culprits sprouts, leeks, chillies, onions and garlic I treat with caution. Baked beans and other beans of course.

All things I love. Dammit.

HelterSkelter1 Fri 21-Feb-25 08:03:18

My stomach is growling just writing the words!

NonGrannyMoll Fri 21-Feb-25 08:30:18

Ice cream - instant migraine. Even most of the expensive ones can make my head rumble. DH adores ice cream almost more than life itself, so I keep a stock of Alpro soya desserts in the pantry for me - OK, it's warm but I'm not keen on frozen desserts anyway, so no great loss.

NonGrannyMoll Fri 21-Feb-25 08:37:30

HelterSkelter1, my acid indigestion is sensitive to porridge made with milk. It's fine with fruit juice, so I imagine it's the milk at fault. Oddly, though, a drink of milk doesn't upset my stomach but it does give me a loose cough for an hour or so. So maybe milk has a selective effect on some people?

teabagwoman Fri 21-Feb-25 10:15:24

I find that a drink of skimmed milk will relieve my reflux but I have to avoid full fat dairy.

HelterSkelter1 Fri 21-Feb-25 10:24:36

It's really difficult pinning down the culprit(s). I think tomatoes are a problem as well and I have loved and eaten tomatoes by the ton since a child.
Chemo hasn't helped at all, but I was having problems before.
I never used to have to think about my stomach and food. Another hiccup with getting older.

JackyB Fri 21-Feb-25 10:25:15

Another thread revived from way back, but still relevant. I have a Ingushetia but never connected it with problems with certain foods. I don't enjoy the taste of chocolate any more, and never have been ab!e to stomach dark chocolate.

Otherwise, just large amounts of anything will cause discomfort. Had my gall bladder out 25 years ago and never really enjoy eating g these days.

JackyB Fri 21-Feb-25 10:26:19

That should read "hiatus hernia" of course.

Rula Fri 21-Feb-25 10:36:31

Rice and tuna. For years I enjoyed a light lunch of Basmati rice, M&S tuna with a touch of mayonnaise. Throw in a tiny tomato or two and I was happy.

Now it's become impossible. Tried again recently and I thought I was dying. It seems to turn into a massive lump as I swallow and for a minute or so I was flinging myself round the house trying to calm myself. I've not had a heart attack but I'm guessing it might feel a bit like that. Unable to swallow . Very traumatic.

So no more of my favourite snack. So sad.

I'd love to know why this happens

farmgran Fri 21-Feb-25 10:46:46

With me its bread. It makes me blow off something shocking. Its particularly bad when I'm going round the supermarket. At least I get the shopping done quickly!

HelterSkelter1 Fri 21-Feb-25 11:00:00

Annoyingly it's all the foods we are supposed to eat to keep healthy. Wholemeal stuff etc. Plenty of fruit and veg.

For a few days I am cutting out coffee. Which will also reduce the quantity of milk I drink as well. And then introduce milk back in to see what happens. I don't like black coffee so I can't introduce that back in first. It really does limit my own menus.

I do sympathise with anyone who has had problems for many years.
