Foods you can no longer eat

Went to a lovely Italian restaurant last week and had the best fettuccine boscaiola I have ever eaten.
Now, it’s been a few years since I’ve eaten this rather rich dish but all my life I’ve had a cast iron stomach and nothing upset it.
Not any more. Had reflux for hours, really badly. I do have a hiatus hernia now so should have known better.
What foods can you no longer eat? What upsets your stomach as you have aged?

Cucumber. Now gives me the most dreadful heartburn.

I'm told it's the skin and to peel it off first so will give it a go when I next buy a cucumber

Crusty bread, shortcrust pastry. brussels, onions, pepperoni pizza, can only eat 1 tomato, coffee, tea, fizzy drinks. I can only eat a couple of cubes of dark chocolate. Cabury's chocolate, After Eight chocolates. Anything with mint in it.
I'm a glutton for punishment when it comes to the chocolate and pizza. I eat it and end up sucking the Rennies.

Oh gosh, I read this thread with fear and trembling. I have been in hospital now for 8 nights now, after being brought in with severe chest pains and bringing up lots of frothy foam, handfuls. It seems that everything I like, and have tolerated for 82 years is now going to be a no-no.
Every time I ate, after 10 minutes would bring on this awful pain behind my breastbone.
Gaviscon Advance seems to help, but am also on lots of other meds, including anti-biotics.
I am hoping to be some dietary advice before leaving hospital, sometime after the weekend.
Good luck to all with this awful illness.

I used to love eating fish and chips on Fridays and have done for years .
I enjoyed a big portion .
Yesterday was another occasion when just the smell of it cooking made me feel really sick.
Fortunately the upmarket chippie offers a prawn salad as an alternative so I had that instead.
It's a shame as it's a lovely restaurant in which to meet up with friends.

It's not the only meal defeating me -I had stewed beef and dumplings and the most violent stomach upset afterwards .
I've always had a very healthy appetite and now I'm struggling to finish my food and have to eat slowly and stop when I feel slightly full leaving food on my plate .
It happened to my mother so I guess that I'm ageing as she did .

Hi Jane -
I wondering if we have the beginnings of gallstone problems ......
I had one severe attack some 20 years ago, but it stopped .
Since then a couple of vague attacks.
The Doctor said that my gallstones were having a little walk about !

I first had a suspected gallstone attack in August 2021, then a few more over the following weeks, and realised each one had been after eating beef (mince, roast, pie) or lamb (chops). I sadly cut those out, then had an attack after a dessert with whipped cream, so cut out cream, then after over-indulging chocolate. All good for a few months, then I had a venison burger and ended up in A&E last spring with pain, and 12 hours of incessant vomiting. Ultrasound only showed “gravel” rather than measurable stones, no huge urgency to remove the gall bladder, I just forgot that venison is red meat so it’s off limits.

All good then, still eating chicken and fish, and greatly increased the quantity and variety of vegetables and fruit, easily topping the “30 plants a week” suggestion. And my digestive system responded with horrendous IBS. On to the low FODMAP elimination diet since October and I’m slowly re-introducing foods that are potential triggers.

I now know I can’t eat leeks, onions, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms, any pulses, apples, plums, cherries, dried fruit, cashews.

For my first 65 years I could eat anything, I hate having to be so cautious.

I used to love eggs when I was young. When pregnant with my first child in 1969 the very sight or thought of one made me throw up.Afterwards I could tolerate them as long as they were not boiled. Now I cannot eat them in any shape or form of cooking method without feeling really sick.I have also gone off bananas which I used to love they taste foul now. I used to love a prawn sandwich but cannot eat one now without getting terrible stomach ache afterwards.

My daughter bought me a mexican chicken wrap with lots of peppers, chillis, chicken, salad etc. it was lovely but did I regret it a few hours later.

I do have a hiatus hernia and possibly acid reflux. I thought I was going to die! I had such pain in my chest and could hardly breathe. It was dreadful. Gaviscon finally got rid of it.👏👏

After my week of tummy problems , I will not, ever, buy a prepared salad. As a matter of fact, no raw veg for me again.

It's not just food that upsets your system. In my early 30's I became allergic to Avocado's prior to that I could eat them. The odd thing is, so did my sister about the same age.
So consequently our children never tried them. My niece recently tried an Avocado, same thing happened to her.

Had a recent procedure in Hospital, asked if I had any Allergies, laughing said just Avocado's, to be told that's the same as Latex Allergy it was on the list of issues. That explains why my hands always itched when I wore surgical gloves in work.

Marmite, I love marmite. For the last 20 or so years I suffer from yeast allergies.
I also suffer from other allergies which are hard to find in food, eg pain aux raisins and lemon meringue pie depending on which boulangerie it is bought from and certain wines sad.

When I was younger I decided to stop the pill and use a husband’s protection, condom. I then found out I was allergic to them.

Oh, down there.
