Posting Christmas Cards

I have just been to the post office to buy stamps for my cards. It won't open until this afternoon due to an armed robbery there on Saturday.
Whilst I was there the person behind the counter (not the usual Postmaster) told me that the last day for posting 2nd class cards was Monday last week and Friday last week for 1st class, because of the strikes.
I was not aware of the early postal dates and now wonder whether it will be worth taking the chance to post the cards or not bother.
Is anybody else in the same position?

Has anyone mentioned sending virtual cards? I've enjoyed receiving some and have sent a a few to Australian relatives.
You can't display them but at least they arrive.

grandtanteJE65 Thu 22-Dec-22 16:47:43

Yes, post them, everyone will understand why they are late this year, if they are late.Even if your cards don't arrive until after New Year, they should you were thinking of those you wrote to.

Not bothering this year - too unreliable and our rural service isn’t too great on non strike days unfortunately

For the first time in 15 years I have sent an email Christmas message to our friends in Australia. I usually send cards and put a printed letter inside. You can't really beat a letter in the post.

However, with the strikes and the cost emailing seemed the best option.

I have also cut down on the cards I send to distant relatives. Most of them are DH's and some I have never even met. Most of them rarely send us a card so I thought this year was the year to put a stop to it.

Most of our cards are posted through our letter box by friends and neighbours - no stamp required.

I posted some cards first class in November. They took three weeks to reach destination. Bank statements sand bills are arriving on time!

Christmas is a season not a day, why worry if they’re late they’ll still be appreciated!

I'm going to re-do my Christmas card list into three columns. Push through the door, post and email. This year we got a friend to film us wishing everyone happy Christmas, and we sent lots of people the video instead of a card. Today I received a card by email, which was a home made one scanned and sent for me to print out and fold, so I had the card to put on display. Such a clever idea.

We haven't sent cards this year due to the strikes, we are going to to donate to prostate cancer as my husband was diagnosed with this awful disease in 2020

Dizzyribs Fri 23-Dec-22 08:07:18

It’s so patchy isn’t it. Still waiting for a parcel containing my husband’s Christmas Gift - ordered late September. It’s tracked- been In Birmingham since October 9th - doubt I will ever see it- but no compensation as it’s tracked so not officially lost or damaged 🤷🏻‍♀️
A second class card from London arrived in two days but most of my cards, posted November 24th haven’t arrived yet.

No consolation for those with missing cards but I posted a card in the Midlands on Monday that was in Sussex on Tuesday.
Couldn't really have been any quicker.
Don't think it's at all even across the country though - one for Nottingham (posted Friday) wasn't there mid-day yesterday.

NotSpaghetti Fri 23-Dec-22 09:47:34

Dizzyribs - can you call the sorting office in Birmingham? I had help with a parcel that was "stuck" somewhere once like this.

I haven't received my son's card, posted 1st class on the 7th, strikes today and tomorrow so I won't get it until next week. He only lives 13 miles away so goodness knows why it is taking so long.

I posted my own cards on the 3rd by 2nd class - some for friends 100+ miles away were delivered within 3 days, others addressed closer to home took a full 2 weeks.

Meanwhile a package I was waiting for, which was due to arrive on the 19th, was delayed due to strikes, then yesterday (22nd) the postie shoved an illegible red card through my letterbox saying my package was being returned to the sorting office. I was at home all day and had put a note on the door under the brass knocker saying "Please knock loudly". I don't think he knocked at all because I had a 12 hour powercut yesterday so there was no w/machine or dishwasher or radio on. If he'd knocked, I would have heard it. Now I can't get it redelivered until the 29th so I'm annoyed.

Some of ours posted just in time seem to have got through, some of DH's (posted late) have also arrived.

I expect lots will be arriving late, yours won't be the only ones, CraftyGranny.

The ones I posted overseas, in plenty of time, have not arrived yet.

Babs758 Fri 23-Dec-22 11:40:22

My relatives and friends will be getting theirs late but at least I have done them. I had some old 2nd class stamps to use up so prioritised relatives and close friends and have used E cards for my friends overseas.

I’ve posted my granddaughter’s birthday card in September, two weeks before her birthday on 4 October and she still hasn’t received it. I posted their Christmas cards 13th Dec in 1 envelope at the post office. They were weighed and stamped by the postmistress and they still have not received them. I will no longer be using the post office to post mail or parcels. I will be going through DHL or one of those, I’d rather pay extra and get my stuff to its destination. Royal Mail has had it with meangry

TopSec Wed 28-Dec-22 13:33:17

Apologies as I am late to this post so I am not aware as to whether you went ahead and posted your cards. We have just received the bulk of ours today (28th), so I hope yours got to their destination on time

happycatholicwife1 Sun 01-Jan-23 19:06:06

It's the thought that counts.

Got a whole bunch of cards a couple of days ago, but since Christmas has gone no real point, it’s like very late birthday cards.
Just about to take them all down now in any case.
If they strike again next year I won’t send any at all.

Forlornhope Sun 01-Jan-23 19:41:11

It was good to know the strike had delayed the cards not absence through death.

Allsorts Sun 01-Jan-23 19:45:02

Got a batch of cards yesterday, won’t post any next year.

Kim19 Sun 01-Jan-23 19:46:02

Mine sent first class in good time within UK yet only arrived 30th. Never again strike or no strike.

GrannySomerset Sun 01-Jan-23 19:50:19

I doubt the postal unions will compensate all the charities who will lose sales next year as people change their card buying habits.

Callistemon21 Sun 01-Jan-23 19:59:16

We sent some second class which arrived across the country in a couple of days.

On Friday we received one sent first class from Devon, about 150 miles away, clearly postmarked 3rd December.

SueDonim Sun 01-Jan-23 20:00:48

The majority of our cards arrived on 28th Dec, including some that were franked in the first week of December, which was when I posted mine.

I also realised last night that I turned over two pages at once in my address book when doing my cards and missed sending to those people - at least I can blame it on the strike! grin

Grannybags Sun 01-Jan-23 20:11:54

We're still waiting for about 10 cards. Bristol sorting office though and it's heaving!
