Hand washing dishes.

Some family came over for lunch today and dil insisted on washing the dishes. I don't have a dishwasher and neither does she.
I had to bite my tongue and leave the room. It was as if she had never washed dishes before. The hot tap was on and she was rinsing things then trying to soak a greasy pan first before the china. I suggested she fill a soapy basin and do cups and plates first but she faffed around so much I left her to it.
A plastic item from the freezer needed cleaned and she binned the cloth that she used on it.
How do you all do a hand dish wash efficiently?

I can appreciate your frustration!! Hot soapy water is essential. I wash glasses first, followed by cutlery then crockery, ensuring the least soiled items are washed ahead of greasy ones.

Finally, the pans, with anything really greasy being left until last. Although I have a dishwasher, there are almost always some things to wash by hand.

I don't have a dishwasher either as I live alone and would take an age to fill one. I do my glasses, then china and then pots and pans. Greasy things are left until the end and I normally have had soaking from the start on the worktop. I know my sister and I will have a row tomorrow over dish washing, it always happens.

Same here Ashcombe I like to rinse the soap off as well but trying to save water as well, have to be less fussy.

Change the water regularly, or keep topping it up with hot water, to keep the water really hot and then wash items in the order OP lists.

kircubbin2000, I'd just be glad that somebody did the washing up. Of, course, that's not the way I'd do it - but I'd say not a word. Later, when alone, I'd inspect and maybe re-do/rinse a few things!

Mr B does all ours, no idea of his method but it all seems fine. I just keep him topped up with Fairy liquid (his preference), and wash the dish cloths etc on an almost daily basis.

We don't have a dishwasher so I wash glasses, China, pots and pans and really greasy things last that usually have had a bit of washing up liquid and hot water put in them already to help shift the grease. The hot water is changed as necessary.

Plenty of hot water, glasses and cleanish stuff before greasy items.

Never had a dishwasher, and really don’t want one.

Hate helping washing up at community events and seeing others trying to clean stuff in a couple of inches of lukewarm water, so unhygienic.

According to the Fairy liquid advert you can use cold water if you buy their new washing up liquid. I wonder how germ free their ‘clean’ dishes are.

I’m now living alone, i use the dishwasher usually once a day. I fill it as the day goes be, then do a short wash.

I was trained in 1A by Miss Parkin, the domestic science teacher to wash glasses, cutlery, plates then pans. I was 11 it was 1951, she was a powerful woman so I’ve always followed her advice. In fact I’ve just done so. Family been endless pots, dishwasher full so sink needed. I suspect Miss Parkin would disapprove of fish washers

Have you seen the clip of Rosie Holt MP saving water by reusing plates from earlier meal? Have a Google.

Grandmadinosaur Sat 24-Dec-22 21:08:07

I was just going to say Iam64 seeing as we are in agreement of the order of washing wasn’t this what we learnt in domestic science? Sadly long gone from the curriculum but we were taught the basics.

Rosie Holt is a satirist.

I have to rinse everything in hot water. And I put all cutlery in the cutlery drainer handle side down except for sharp knives. When I do use the dishwasher, which isn’t very often, I rinse everything first. I can’t bear to see plates etc sitting there with bits of food on them. I’m beyond help, I think.

I use a dishwasher mostly daily, but like others on here, when hand washing at DD’s last week it was glasses, cups, cutlery, plates then pans/bakeware (which had been soaking in hot soapy water). Water regressed/ replaced as necessary. My Nan was a very good teacher for that, and even better, she thought my DBs should learn too!

Mollygo Sat 24-Dec-22 23:30:17

Regressed=refreshed!!

I have a stiff brush by the sink and use that with cold water on all plates and pans as they are used, so that everything is stacked ready to wash but not very dirty. That way there is nothing stuck on and the washing water remains cleaner for longer. Obviously wash in order, glasses, cups, cutlery, plates, pans. Any dirty pans are left to soak for a while at the end and may need a good rinse afterwards to remove any residue of greasy water. We used a dishwasher for about 25 years but I can't justify having one now living on my own.

I use the dishwasher for anything that will fit in.
I don't rinse first.

If (gorced into) hand washing my water is scalding hot and everything is hot rinsed too.
I use gallons of water I think.
I soap everything from a very soapy solution in a bowl or pan (whatever is in the washing queue) and scrub under a slowly running hot tap and then rinse under the hot tap. I put the cutlery in the soapy solution whilst I work and do the least dirty things first.

I'd rather use the dishwasher. 🤣

I do glasses, plates, then cutlery, rinsing as I go. Usually a water change at this point (especially if there are lots of dishes) then the casserole, serving and pots.

No dishwasher at our house, only DH!

Grammaretto Sun 25-Dec-22 00:25:18

I hope Santa brings leaves me a new washing up scritcher.grin
I host young people from around the world and can tell if they have dishwashers at home.
Some have never hand-washed dishes - truly!
Mind you others can't stack a dishwasher.
I worry about precious things getting broken and never allow people to help when they've been drinking.
I just say firmly " leave it -I'll do it in the morning"

I do very little cooking as my nephew brings me microwavable meals. I dont have a diswasher as I live alone so I only have to wash up about twice a week or when I run out of plates etc. No need to do it every day.

BlueBelle Sun 25-Dec-22 04:35:49

I don’t like dish washers
I have never had any order of washing up I just do it as it arrives I have no interest in it apart from cleaning the items used

teabagwoman Sun 25-Dec-22 06:48:27

Having had my boiler turned down a notch as per the recent advice I’ve found that I’ve needed a little extra elbow grease but things are perfectly clean. Mind you I use very little fat when cooking.
