Inspired by something I heard on the Radio the other day who was planning to do 23 different things in 2023 I thought about making my own list but would be interested in your ideas.
Starting with easy
1)Read 23 books
2)Take the initiative in arranging to meet friends for coffee/lunch 23 times (instead of waiting to be asked)
3)Agree to 23 invitations - too easy to say “No” and hunker down indoors
4)Identify 23 areas in the house which need a serious “urning out”
5)Take 23 bags of books to the Oxfam Bookshop
6)Take 23 bags of clothes to my other favourite charity shop
7) Once the trains are up and running properly again visit Coventry Cathedral which is just a couple of stops up the line from MK- and maybe identify another 22 reasonably accessible places I have always meant to visit but never got round to

Right, so far I have finished one book , arranged to meet up with book group friends tomorrow and tidied out the tea towel and clingfilm /foil drawer in the kitchen.
More ideas?

“Oh typos “Turning out”

Hetty58 Tue 03-Jan-23 11:18:59

I'm all for doing different things (but not counting them) as I find routines too stifling. Right now, though, I'm concentrating on doing f - all - and plenty of it!

MawtheMerrier Tue 03-Jan-23 11:30:29

Ah, Hetty having had a couple of years of that enforced by the pandemic but reinforced by my natural laziness, , if I don’t stir myself now it will be too late by the time I hit my mid-70’s. Plus “times wingèd chariot” and all that. Who knows whether my health and fitness and ability will hold up, I look back at what Paw could enjoy just 18 months before he died and am aware that I only get one bite at this particular cherry

I think it's not a bad idea to make a conscious effort to do things - it doesn't have to be routine but without a bit of planning the time just flies by.

I can certainly find 23 things to do in my flat but I'll have to space them out as just thinking about them hurts my head smile

MawtheMerrier Tue 03-Jan-23 11:47:16

Just as well we can agree to differ
I like a challenge and the novelty will keep me focused (until February anyway!)

MawtheMerrier Tue 03-Jan-23 11:49:02

Oops misread your post - I thought you said it WAS a bad idea.
Perhaps I should add “read more carefully” to my list! 😳

annsixty Tue 03-Jan-23 11:50:43

The book part would be very easy for me I read most days although the intellectual content leaves much to be desired.
The making the first move to invite people to meet up is a very good idea.
I should make a start on 23 items of never worn clothing and I might look out and try 23 recipes never done before.
What a good suggestion.

Wander Avebury. Enjoy Ely and the Fens. Perhaps when it's warm. Not sure about 23, just things I like to do every so often.

Be a tourist. Hop-on-hop-off in London.

Duxford. Bletchley Park.

Hadrian's wall, time to walk it again.

Apart from walking dogs, need more exercise, 23 hours a week?

FannyCornforth Tue 03-Jan-23 11:52:52

Have you been to the Cathedral before Maw? It’s stunning
Be sure to go on a sunny day

Riverwalk Tue 03-Jan-23 11:53:48

Have you got any theatre visits planned Maw? I've just booked for 'Kerry Jackson' at the National theatre, starring Fay Ripley.

El Barco is the newest tapas restaurant in fashionable Walthamstow Village, and it’s Kerry Jackson’s pride and joy

I'll add 23 new recipes, we're always searching and trying recipes.

Great idea.

I could do with moving 23 things that need filing or throwing out from surfaces, the bottom of the stairs, the garage or my wardrobe. Every day would be best, but perhaps every week would be more realistic... As Tesco keeps telling us, Every Little Helps.

Thanks for the idea, MawtheMerrier, and Happy New Year!

As soon as the trains are running reliably again I plan to get to London (probably) for a matinee or to the BRB in Birmingham but also to exhibitions- 1 a month?
In the meantime I’ll have to make do with streamed theatre at a local cinema -although I have just turned down streamed performances of The Crucible (too long!) and The Seagull - too dreary!
Wish El Barco was real as getting down to the Ds and GC in Walthamstow should also feature!
Haggis paninis at the William Morris House in Lloyd Park might undo the healthy eating kick though.

I decided to walk at least every other day. We live moments fronm a coastal path, so very easy. Bad cough today and not feeling well…. That resolution didn’t last long.

allsortsofbags Tue 03-Jan-23 12:46:42

What a wonderful idea, thanks Maw for starting this post.

23 books, not a problem :-) 23 bags of things to the Charity shop is something I've been putting off so a good prompt.

23 places to visit is another good idea. We went back to Avebury 2 years ago and I feel another visit coming on :-) We used to live near there and I miss it. I feel a list coming on of places I'd like to visit or revisit.

I have been putting off driving far since Lockdown so I think I'll look for 23 places to drive to.

I shall make a start on put some things on the calendar to keep me on track.

This is the most motivated I've been in a long time, thanks again and good luck to us all.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 03-Jan-23 12:49:29

Yep, all doable.

May I add 23 no’s to things that you feel obliged to do/attend but would rather not.

I have just managed to say my first no to an invite I would have said yes to previously.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Tue 03-Jan-23 13:06:00

I think I need a more modest goal Maw - if I got rid of 23 bags of books and clothes I'd have nothing to wear or read! We can't have that, can we?

However, my spare room needs a sort out so maybe I'll start with that.

Lathyrus Tue 03-Jan-23 13:10:46

Brilliant!

Lose 23 lbs would be a good idea for me😳

Read 23 books I could do in a couple of months😬 Or less…

I need to give the others some thought but yes, yes, yes 2023 here I come!

henetha Tue 03-Jan-23 13:47:33

I like this idea. And I like Grannygravy's idea of learning to say no too.
23 books is the easiest. I read far more in a year. The one I will try hardest with is getting rid of 23 bags of rubbish, clothes, etc. I'm drowning in stuff!

MawtheMerrier Tue 03-Jan-23 14:23:26

I’ve added
8) Lose 23 lb too, having jumped on the scales and off again PDQ. How can I have gained 1 1/2 stone in a year?
Answers on a postcard
I’ve tried to make my 23 (well 8 so far) SMART objectives
SMART” standing for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound in best corporate-speak and things which I hope I will enjoy achieving - or what’s the point.
Check in with you in a bit to see how you are all faring!

AGAA4 Tue 03-Jan-23 14:23:42

Excellent idea. I will try to walk 23 miles each week.
I read a lot so 23 books is doable.
I will try to do 23 new things this year. This may be the hardest one to achieve.
Thank you "Maw" I have been inspired.

Blondiescot Tue 03-Jan-23 14:36:48

I'd never manage the arranging to meet friends for coffee etc - don't have that many friends, and I don't think I've had 23 invitations to anything in my entire life, never mind in one year.

Kim19 Tue 03-Jan-23 14:45:04

Riverwalk, I'll be very interested to hear your thoughts on Kerry Jackson. I read the most awful review which caused me to change my mind about attending.

Lucca Tue 03-Jan-23 15:15:19

Great plan Maw. But following my diagnosis last year I had a pretty huge clear out so don’t have much left for charity shop. But the reading thing I must try to address as I’ve been unable to settle to reading pretty much since the pandemic, weirdly.
I’ll try to book a decorator too as things could do with freshening up.
23 new recipes also good
