Inspired by something I heard on the Radio the other day who was planning to do 23 different things in 2023 I thought about making my own list but would be interested in your ideas.
Starting with easy
1)Read 23 books
2)Take the initiative in arranging to meet friends for coffee/lunch 23 times (instead of waiting to be asked)
3)Agree to 23 invitations - too easy to say “No” and hunker down indoors
4)Identify 23 areas in the house which need a serious “urning out”
5)Take 23 bags of books to the Oxfam Bookshop
6)Take 23 bags of clothes to my other favourite charity shop
7) Once the trains are up and running properly again visit Coventry Cathedral which is just a couple of stops up the line from MK- and maybe identify another 22 reasonably accessible places I have always meant to visit but never got round to

Right, so far I have finished one book , arranged to meet up with book group friends tomorrow and tidied out the tea towel and clingfilm /foil drawer in the kitchen.
More ideas?

I did once sort 26 bags of mixed items (books, clothes, toys, household stuff) for DD to take to charity for me(decent stuff) when i moved house years ago though.

Nannan2 Thu 05-Jan-23 15:54:29

MawtheMerrier-How much STUFF have you got that needs 'turning out' Maw? (23 BAGS of books to Oxfam and 23 BAGS of clothes to charity shop)??🤣 I could maybe manage 23 books only to give away by end of year and maybe a couple of binbags of stuff to charity shop but Not 23 bags of each! 😁

Callistemon21 Thu 05-Jan-23 15:46:13

Great idea. I could sort out 23 items to take to a charity shop, 23 bags would be hard
What count as items wonder?

Individual items of clothing, jewellery, other items? DH just tooks boxes and bags of stuff to the charity shop today; the woman there said, no they couldn't take anything at the moment but when she looked at the items in the boot, she took it all (thank goodness).

MawtheMerrier
Does it count if a DC has cleared out these items from our house?
Just wondering .........
Or is that cheating?
wink

What a lovely post. Thank you for the inspiration. I am coming out of a long depression filled with anxiety so the idea of moving forward like this is wonderful.
If I only do one of the things you suggest, I will be very happy !
Thanks.

How about planting 23 bulbs to brighten up a dull area of your garden?
Or phone someone you know who will appreciate it one a week for 23 weeks.
Look at your make-up and toiletries and only keep the 23 you use the most.
23 steps after every meal might help me lose the 23-half pounds I would love to lose.
Do 23 of the exercises I am meant to do for my back instead of my hurried daily ten.
Thanks for the motivating ideas Maw.

This is brilliant, thank you!

I'm going to join the 'lose 23lbs' club please. Would it count if we loose that between us do you think?

Also, I would very much like to make my street facing window at home into an Advent calendar next December, so 23 'windows' to create.
The garden is still quite new to me so I'm pinching the 23 plants from small nurseries or plant sales idea.

I really like the idea of 'a serious urning out', sounds much more fun!

I’ll add 23 upcycling projects to my list.

Mollygo Thu 05-Jan-23 14:08:50

Great idea. I could sort out 23 items to take to a charity shop, 23 bags would be hard.
Reading, no problem.
23 tasks and projects around the house-yes, I’m up for that.
I might add 23 trips to the gym per month. I do go about 15-20 times but the challenge would be on those days when I CBB.
Thanks for the inspiration Maw!

IrishDancing Thu 05-Jan-23 14:06:37

Will you keep us up to the mark Maw, otherwise I’m liable to fall by the wayside!
23 books - easy
23 sewing/knitting projects finished
23lbs - I’d be happy with 7
23 (small!) bags for the charity shops
23 bags of stuff for the food bank
23 new places to visit
23 days holiday (not 23 separate holidays!)
Good luck everybody!

What a fab idea and great replies! My 23 things maybe a little less active, but I can make the list can’t I? I listen to audio books and manage an average of about 100last year , I have a chronic health condition and am bed a lot! Will be intrigued to see how we all gave done in December! Thank you for the inspiration

Davida1968 Thu 05-Jan-23 13:17:19

I'd like to sort out 23 (at least 230? Maybe 2023?) of the digital photos on my computer. I guess that possibly 50% could be discarded...

grandtanteJE65 Thu 05-Jan-23 13:10:53

I could not possible make do with only 23 books.
Nor could I possibly find 23 bin bags of clothes that are surplus to requirement.

I certainly could find 23 tasks and projects round the house that need attending to, but as DH is not well enough to do all of them, and I cannot, as I don't have the know-how, we might just manage 3 or 4 in the course of this year.

I am however seriously considering starting a task I can do: stripping wallpaper off the kitchen walls and ceiling and papering and painting it.

I am also encouraging DH to start taking a little exercise every day - he starts, then stops, usually with good reason, but then it is back to square 1 when he starts again.

Right now I am concentrating on familiarizing our two half-grown cats with the garden, so when I do start decorating in the warmer weather we don't have to worry about keeping them in.

It's a good idea, but why 23?

inishowen Thu 05-Jan-23 13:06:54

I'll add 23 knitted baby cardigans for charity. I will probably do more. My daughter has committed to 30 bagsin 30 days. That's bags for recycling or charity.

Alioop Thu 05-Jan-23 13:06:05

Maybe try 23 different flavours of ice cream in our local shop as I always go for the same one each time. I'll probably be better sticking to the 23 books though.
I've only 5 shows booked so far, not an awful lot to choose from at present here in N.I.
I'll have the RSPB bird count soon, so let's hope I'll see 23 birds this year as I think they were all in hiding when I was doing the 2022 one.

TopSec Thu 05-Jan-23 12:59:53

@MawtheMerrier I am loving these and going to be very presumptuous that you don't mind and pinch your whole list (plus some from other posters - hope they don't mind either). What a great idea. I love order and formality so this post is straight up my street. Thank you

Warbler Thu 05-Jan-23 12:55:08

I LOVE this. How about 23 things outside of your comfort zone. I've bought myself a huge diary this year - a page a day.....I'm a messy scribbler over just an inch a day, so thought that I could record a bit more and yes.....those 23 things are going to get recorded. Let's get together again at the end of 2023 and see how many we have achieved. Thanks for that MawtheMerrier.

MawtheMerrier Thu 05-Jan-23 12:38:57

Given the " cost of living " crisis, and recovering from Christmas, I wonder if being tempted by but RESISTING 23 sales bargains would count? smile

leeds22 Thu 05-Jan-23 12:07:09

23 books - no problem
lose 23 lbs - I'd be a skeleton
23 new recipes - great idea, I'm working on one a week at the moment. Tried lots during covid but now stuck in a rut
23 holidays - great idea
23 meet ups - will give it a try
must be more pro active about ringing friends

Noname Thu 05-Jan-23 11:47:15

I could easily do 23 new recipes as I probably currently try something new at least once a week.
Also, reading 23 books very achievable but as a PP said, the intellectual content leaves a lot to be desired! (Why am I sometimes embarrassed to admit to reading chick lit! 🤦🏼‍♀️)
Top of my list is losing 23lbs! Maybe connected to trying all those new recipes! 🤣
Good luck everyone with your aims for 2023!

Summerfly Thu 05-Jan-23 11:31:40

Thanks Maw. It’s just the kick up the backside that I needed! This has made me think of things I’ve always thought about doing and never had the time or motivation to do. It’s a problem I’ve always had unfortunately. Time to take the bull by the horns and crack on before it’s too late!

NewHere Thu 05-Jan-23 11:30:28

Really great thread. I'll consider this!
If you do go to Coventry I read that Dippy the Diplodocus will be exhibiting at the Herbert Art Gallery and museum. He's visiting from the Natural History Museum for 3 years!
I need to make a list when this unwelcome lurgy passes!

123kitty Thu 05-Jan-23 11:28:18

What a great thread - thanks.

Nicolenet Thu 05-Jan-23 11:25:40

Thank you for this lovely topic. I would like the 23lbs weight loss. Top of the list. Also some 23 ways of saving money? Ha to be slim and richer! ...

Missiseff Thu 05-Jan-23 11:15:27

23 books in a year?? Jeez, how du find the time??

Riverwalk Thu 05-Jan-23 06:53:14

I've thought of a good one: 23 day trips to somewhere new, using only my Oyster card, so as well as being interesting it will be free smile

It will also help my brain (see other thread) as I'll be stimulated by the new surroundings!
