Here’s Matt.
Good morning everyone from south Manchester. It’s dark but dry. Busy down there below me this morning, a Trafford road sweeper lorry has just noisily trundled past, lit up like Christmas tree, the 6:35am train to Manchester Oxford Road has just pulled away from Platform 1 and, in the distance, I can see the red winking lights of a plane coming into land at Manchester airport.
I’m absolutely delighted to tell you all that there was no night time telephone emergency call from my stepfather. Yay! That’s now 3 consecutive nights. I’m hoping this means he’s turned a corner. From 2am I woke up every hour though (it’s on my mind very much after bedtime) and found myself just checking the time on my phone, dreading a call, but grateful there hadn’t been one.
Yesterday was challenging. My stepfather opened the door to a district nurse who had called to administer urgent Vit.B injections, every day for 5 days. She went away, asking my 90y old stepfather to ‘sort it out’ with his GP as she assumed he’d have them. He of course rang me. I was on the phone for over an hour, ringing the doctors surgery, who gave me the ‘hub’ number for Trafford district nurses. Turns out that Apparently the ampoules have to be ‘on the property’ when they call - and they weren’t. I rang the surgery back requesting an urgent prescription be dispensed today and when (if) they arrive I’ve said I’ll let the district nursing team know.
Left hands and right hands come to mind. Himself said ‘multinational companies can sort out major logistics smoothly yet the NHS departments cannot liaise between a doctor, a pharmacy and a district nurse’. I bet the poor district nurse was cross. That visit was a waste of her time. Just one tiny example of the inefficient coordination that goes on in the NHS. Replicate this up and down the country? No wonder there’s a black hole sucking in money and resources. Yet nowadays we even have the technology to assist!
Rant over.
Anyhoo ...
We are going over to him mid morning and picking up a list to do his M&S shop for him. He said last night he didn’t think he felt up to coming which is perfectly understandable so we’ll fetch his groceries. I said he can always see how he feels and change his mind if he wants when we call.
Have a good Wednesday if you can and while you can. These last couple of weeks have been an eye opener for me. How things can turn on a sixpence and how a person can go from coping to leaning can be quite alarming when events change.
Starting tomorrow I’m going to try to be succinct!
I may have to use bullet points ...
😁
