Just bought a new car!

This is the first time I have had to buy one on my own, although the previous one was in my name because my OH had Parkinsons - and I am hoping I have done the right thing!

We have always had VW Polos, and the current one is 10 years old, lives outside and is a bit damp inside (which causes demisting problems) and has no parking sensors. I felt that I would feel safer in a newer car with some modern refinements.

I have found one which has parking sensors and only has 11,000 on the clock in spite of being registered in Oct 2019. My SIL is a mechanic and he has looked at it for me and thinks it is worth the money and that I am getting a fair deal on my old car.

It is still a large chunk out of my savings, but I felt that I needed to have a car I would feel more secure about in order to be out and about. I live a long way from the nearest town.

I just hope I have done the right thing!

Well done Luckygirl3. I’m about to embark on the same thing - it’s daunting.

Well done Luckygirl and why not ? Two years ago I bought a 2 year old Kia Rio, after having a Honda Jazz for 7 + years. I am divorced and as you say, it was a big chunk out of my savings. I hardly do any mileage, about 3500 miles a year.
My friend has always had Polos - very reliable cars, but a bit out of my price range.
Happy and safe motoring !

You have made considered decision on what you think is right for you, so well done. Fortunate that you were able to have your SIL give it the once over before buying, helps to have some back up when making a major purchase.

Well done indeed! In the time I've been in my home I've gutted it - well someone else did the work you understand, but choosing fixtures and fittings didn't worry me one jot but the thought of buying a car terrifies me!!

I got to thinking recently how come other drivers can park so perfectly without all the 'toing and froing' I do to park straight. Then I realised, it's the parking sensor. I want one!

Enjoy driving your new car Luckygirl3.

Well done you! Enjoy your new car.

Congratulations. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 I reckon you’ve done the right thing. I remember how savvy I felt when I bought my Polo all by myself. Turned out to be a decent car 😁

Thanks for all the encouragement. It feels like a big step but I think it is the right decision.

Yes, you’ve definitely done the right thing. Now go ahead and enjoy your purchase.😊

Good for you. My car is 12 years old, so I am looking at new ones. The thing is that I still really like my car and they don't make that model anymore.

I have to realize at 61 that my next car purchase will be my 'retirement' car, so has to be good on gas, comfortable to drive and reliable. Also needs to be a hatchback for the dog. I wish we had a Volkswagen dealership nearby since I do like them. We are limited on choice because of being remote.

Oh, very nice! 👍 I’ve had Polos and even though they were the lowest-powered versions, they were fun to drive. Good in snow, too, which is quite important in NE Scotland.

You haven’t told us the most important thing, though - the colour! grin. I had a white one and a yellow one. I could never have had an affair, had I wanted one, wink when I owned the yellow one - people for miles around knew my car. 😂

Well done Luckygirl you should feel very proud of yourself!

Great news Lucky. I bought one in May, after my husband’s licence was removed because of his diagnosis. We needed a reliable, comfortable car for endless hospital appointments. I love it but - reversed it into the gate post over the Christmas holiday. No surprises really - I’ll get it fixed evrntually

Oldbat1 Thu 12-Jan-23 21:40:23

Well done! Don’t doubt yourself I think they are great cars. We really must change our 13yr old car soon as it only just managed to pass its mot but I hate change.

Luckygirl3 Thu 12-Jan-23 22:09:05

Bad luck with the gatepost Iam64. sad

The new car is ......... white!! Slightly mad as I live down a country lane!! But there was no choice over the colour. But a good layer of mud is protection in my view!

Well done Lucky. Enjoy your lovely car. You deserve it.

GrannySomerset Thu 12-Jan-23 22:44:53

Congratulations, Luckygirl. The car is a necessity for those of us who live where there are few if any services, and a reliable modern one is absolutely the right thing. My Fiesta is five years old and has a very low mileage so will probably last out my driving days. I would spend my savings on a replacement if I needed to, though. Happy motoring!

JenniferEccles Thu 12-Jan-23 22:53:41

I am certain you have done the right thing. A new, reliable car is essential, particularly as we get older.
Every year there are improvements in the latest models with all those things we didn’t know we needed until we had them like a heated steering wheel ! I must admit when my husband told me we had that feature on our latest car I thought it was a ridiculously unnecessary addition, until we had that bitter spell of weather before Christmas.

Your new car will be money well spent, for the peace of mind alone. I hope you enjoy it.

SueDonim Thu 12-Jan-23 23:55:31

Wear your white with pride, Luckygirl! My last three cars have been white - cheapest option on the list price grin - and I don’t really care how dirty it gets until it starts depositing mud on my clothes. grin

Though it’s currently almost as dirty inside after my little GD got in it yesterday with mud-covered boots. What she’s been doing at school to get in that state, I cannot imagine!

Thank you everyone. It still feels a massive extravagance - but the deed is done and I pick it up on Monday morning.

glammanana Fri 13-Jan-23 09:08:22

Well done Lucky you will love it smile
Last year I bought a new Fiat 500 in Coral and traded in my trusty Polo I thought I would really miss it but didn't.Get out there and enjoy your new car.

Greyduster Fri 13-Jan-23 09:09:25

Well done, Luckygirl - that sounds like a good buy. I looked at Polos back in October when I was looking to swap DH’s car which was far too big for me. I bought a seven month old Mini Cooper instead. Definitely a case of my heart ruling my head! I haven’t been able to drive for a couple of months, but am just busting to get back into it. Enjoy your car and don’t look on it as an extravagance!

Luckygirl3 Mon 16-Jan-23 16:46:40

Fetched the car today - it is great and oh so clean!!

It is very quiet - I thought I had failed to turn the ignition properly as I did not hear the engine start!

I am studying the manual ..... see you all next year!

Aveline Mon 16-Jan-23 16:51:54

VW manuals are sooooo long and complicated. Good luck with it and happy motoring in your new wheels
