Boils on the bum -plagued with them and once , my mother cut the tops off them with a pair of blunt unsterilised nail scissors and applied gentian violet .
At least , they weren't on my face !

Gentian violet takes me back to when I had boils in my bum!
I was probably about 12 and had it painted on!
As for sanitary towels - we had a wall hung incinerator thing in the toilets at school. It was always full and never seemed to work.
School gabardine, in a fetching shade of brown, had a tartan detachable liner and a purse on a strap sewn into the pocket.
Hint of a tint in copper for me.
However, at weekends, we were hippies hanging around the Market Place or sitting for hours in The Mugwump drinking coffee.

Can't remember the name but my older sister used to have a perfume in a small black bottle with a little pink " stick" inside that you used to dab the perfume on your neck. I am sure it used to have a pink bow on it too. Mine was Aqua Manda perfume, very 70s, it had quite a funky bottle all brown and orange swirls.

Coty L’Aimant was my Mum’s favourite. It used to frustrate her that she couldn’t get the remains out with the little pink stick. She’d leave the lid off an empty one and use it as a scented drawer freshener when she couldn’t poke any more out of it.

I loved Ma Griffe.

We had to wear lisle stockings to school and flat lace ups. Plus. Burberry Mac and a beret.

I still love L'Aimant and bought some a couple of years ago .
This past Christmas I've had trouble getting it . Now it's back in Boots .

The original formula dates back to 1927 . It's supposed to be in the same family as Chanel no 5 , but I think that it smells much nicer and , even better it's cheaper !

My mother always wore Revlon Cherries in the Snow lipstick and nail polish .

She had a dispute with a neighbour and this lady said that only prostitutes wore bright red lipstick and nail polish !

I remember Evening in Paris perfume which came in a little blue bottle and had a gorgeous smell.

Californian Poppy, Tabu scent and dusting powder.

I got into trouble soon after I first went to DH's house. His mother had left her pointed padded bra and he asked me what it was. Never thinking I said there were her K2s meaning the Himalayan peak, she had overheard me and Dh reported that I was a cheeky B....... and she wore 34 C. They were sewn in rounds we called them Boudicas at school.
Sanitary towels, I first saw it when a friend brought one to school to see if anyone knew what it was. She had put it across her head and the loops on her ears. Her mum would not tell. Luckily someone did know,so we were enlightened about what the hidden vending machine in the girl's cloakroom was for.
I seem to remember it being passed around in a .music lesson where the Master had no control.

In teenage years I liked Kiku eau de cologne. My mother liked Tweed perfume. My first bra, given to me by my mother was pointed (similar Madonna outfits!). Dr White's sanitary towels or mouse's hammocks as they were known at school. Sanitary belts - oo yuck, the memories. Patchouli and love beads, cheesecloth maxi dresses and headbands with jewels worn over your forehead in 60's/70's. Cremola foam I hear you can get again! Mary Quant eyeliner was the stuff! Armani hair setting gel was just brilliant! Virol malt on a spoon once a week. Rosehip Syrup also. Gypsies selling clothes pegs at the back door and fortune telling too.

I tried getting Ajax when I looked for Vim, but could find neither. I don't know why they'd be withdrawn - unless you used it on a shiny surface it was excellent stuff. I think it was phased out when cream cleaner came in, but wasn't as good.

I didn't know B&Q sold cleaning products, but I'll check it out next time I'm there, thanks. Actually, Mr D likes the chance of a trip to B&Q, so might go for me

I found it near the peg baskets and ironing boards, if that helps.

Coty L'Aimant is still my daily spray perfume of choice. Indeed, a few years back i left a rather special scarf behind somewhere, and it was returned to me as the person picking it up recognised my perfume on it.

Wore a liberty vesr whilst in primarys school over a vest in order to keep chest warm in winter. If I did get a cold my Mum would rub my chest with Vick. USed to have to gargle with some strange little cystals which coloured the warer and tasted horrid.

When I got chilblains Dad would paint on to them some very orangey stuff that stained everything it came into contact with. Warts on my fingers he tied off with cotton until they fell off.

When I last moved house (three years back), I found in the back of that cupboard under the sink about four containers of AJax, which I just threw out.

Ajax was a product just like Vim I wonder if it is still around. As students, we had to clean the bath with something called Gumption.

All of these are a trip down memory lane. I remember buying a single sachet of shampoo every week and hair spray (lacquer) also came in a bigger sachet, where you cut the nozzle off and squirted the liquid into a plastic puffer bottle to ‘spray’ it on - it set like cement! I can remember a lady coming to the house to give my Mum, Gran and Aunt home perms - Prom (?) - can’t remember the name, but the smell was unforgettable!

I remember the refilled squirty hair lacquer bottles and we had a special black comb with bobbles on it to backcomb your beehive.
When I was younger I remember the nit-comb sessions every week over a sheet of newspaper thank God I never got them because the lotion stank and everybody at school knew why someone had it on.
My cousins used to get a dose of Fammels syrup and cod liver oil every week. I got Halibro orange vitamin tablets and cod liver oil capsules, I used to pretend to take them and then give them to my granddad for his pigeons. He never told on me.
Wintergreen and Zambuca for chapped faces.
Some sort of toothpaste in a tin. Gentian violet swabbed onto a sore.

You can still get Vim at B&Q, I used it to scrub a stain on my patio last year, I think it was about £2- it worked really well.

My nanna always had Camay soap, I can still smell it in my memory. She also used some pink liquid hair setting lotion, I’m not sure what it was called, but it set your hair crispy.

Kill your rotting rezones with bleach and get the Vim on eBay .

I've been trying to remember where I bought my last Vim .

I think that it in the local DIY store .

If I don't use Vim on rotting rhizomes then I have to use old fashioned hair bleaching powder from the wholesale hairdressing supply shop .

I cut out the smelly rotting part with a sterilised knife and using an artist's brush brush on the Vim or bleaching powder .

Some of my rhizomes cost a minimum of $75 - imported from the US .
I didn't pay that for them .They were given to me .

The powder does the trick and saves the plant !

Where do you get Vim, Esmay? I tried to get some (or Ajax) a while ago, but with no luck. Barkeepers Friend is good, but far more expensive and not the same thing really.

Liberty bodices with rubber buttons were from the Co op. I hated them. Mine were pulled on and negotiated every winter until I wore a bra. We did wear a vest and an underskirt.

Suspender belts that gave you tummy ache we had to wear long blue stockings for school and needed one to keep them up,the alternative were blue knee socks which changed to red in the sixform

I was "twinked "every Christmas and so were most girls in the class with straight hair.
