On reading a post a few days ago when someone mentioned gentian violet(was this used for bee stings?) it reminded me of the sweets purple violets.I found them discusting.I think I probably tried all other sweets in the shop, and have the teeth fillings to prove it!! Any you particularly hated or were a favourite?

Yammy...yes...jamboree bags.My little sister loved them.We had a mobile green grocer and he sold them and bar six which I liked. Imagining all us kids with our thr' penny bits, pennys, h'pennys and the older ladies on here a farthing, going to the sweetshop !!

Our village shop had a "penny tray" offering a choice of sweets for that price. I usually went for a huge unwrapped gobstopper, which lasted ages. Who knew how many grubby little paws had handled it before I came along!

Bought my son in law a confectioners size jar of ‘flying saucers’ for Xmas …. They’re sitting on his fireplace and the grandkids are forbidden to delve!

Loved Merrymaids and raspberry ruffles, think the pink bubbly gum was a Bazooka Jo

Black bullets. Think they were just in the North.

mayisay Sat 28-Jan-23 11:48:14

I also think it was great that we could buy 2oz, or if feeling flush, a "quarter" of sweets, that were weighed in little scales, and put into white paper bags. Very nostalgic!

I loved flying saucers.(still do when im given the occasional one!) My eldest son also loves them.😁

Nannan2 Sat 28-Jan-23 11:52:55

Never heard of black bullets. How far north?

Philippa111 Sat 28-Jan-23 11:53:44

I disliked liquorice root. you could buy small pieces of it. It tasted awful and made your mouth feel foamy!! Unfortunately I liked everything else!!... cola cubes, penny dainties, fruit salad, gypsy tobacco, lucky charm tatties, and anything with aniseed.

Saggi😄😉

Fruit salad chews, flying saucers, sherbet fountains, liquorice allsorts, frys five boys chocolate.......loved them all.

Nannan2 Sat 28-Jan-23 11:58:09

Mayisay- i know its not same asking for a hundred grams! Theres a little sweetie stall in market where they are all in glass jars and as stall lady is in her 60's you can get away with asking for 'a quarter of so&so'....

nipsmum Sat 28-Jan-23 12:03:13

Anything that smelt of flowers or herbs. I loved liquorice and butterscotch. Chocolate not so much.

Nannan2 Sat 28-Jan-23 12:08:43

Im in the North.we call toffees, toffees! No one says caramels for them(maybe thats just the posh northerners?🤣😂)But yes we have treacle toffee and treacle toffee lollies at bonfire night.

Nannan2 Sat 28-Jan-23 12:11:32

Some of my friends used to chew those liquorice roots- i hatedthem- i still hate liquorice or aniseed flavours. My mam used the root to soak in water to use for sore throats.

Nannan2 Sat 28-Jan-23 12:12:27

Love butterscotch.

Nannan2 Sat 28-Jan-23 12:14:17

Could black bullets have been a local nick name for pontefract cakes? Hated those also.grin

crazygranny Sat 28-Jan-23 12:14:32

Do you remember the sweet shops we got as Christmas presents? The tiny jars were all filled with the really small sweets like cherry lips, midget gems and floral gums.

jeapurs54 Sat 28-Jan-23 12:16:40

I also loved Cherry Lips, there are some old fashioned sweet shops that still sell them, and some on-line. I love most sweets as I still have a very sweet tooth, love all the jelly style sweets made for kids these days but I am still a big kid at heart.

Nannan2 Sat 28-Jan-23 12:21:46

MrsKen33- i loved Crunching Horlicks tablets- they were sold in our local chemists in a tiny pack (about as long as your thumb) and my mum got me one as a 'reward' if we'd been at the drs! Strangely though i disliked Horlicks to drink! (Still not keen)😆
