Please could you tell me which Channel this documentary was on? I have been invited to stay with a friend there and would some info before I decide. Many thanks.

It would be my worst nightmare, sharing a community with all old people. I like to share with young folks, kids, middle age, everyone but all old no no no how limiting

My skin creeps when i read adverts for British retirement developments, where one of the selling points is living with 'like minded people' - and they are talking about probable no more than 100, max people living together.

This Florida community/ies, sounds like hell on earth.

I saw it on youtube but if you can’t get it, there’s a huge amount of info if you google Some Kind of Heaven documentary.
Good luck.

Thank you for this. In an odd kind of way my friend at the Villages has changed since she moved there. She is a lot more into all the activities there than I would be. Good for her if she enjoys them, but, having looked at the docu I think I might decline and perhaps visit her for the day instead of stay the week. I am probably too much of an introvert but don't want to offend either.

Sounds like my kind of hell but I think I’ll watch it out of curiosity.

A weekend break in a Warner Leisure complex convinced me that hoards of people and canned music are definitely not for me.

rafichagran Mon 13-Feb-23 12:23:36

I could not live like that.

Wyllow3 Mon 13-Feb-23 12:27:57

Gross. Worst nightmare.

Theexwife Mon 13-Feb-23 12:48:22

80,000 people must like it.

sodapop Mon 13-Feb-23 12:51:51

Yes each to their own Theexwife like other posters it would be my idea of hell.
All that enforced socialising, I like my peace and quiet too much.

FannyCornforth Mon 13-Feb-23 12:53:16

It would be just like being a student again!
I’m as introverted as they come, but it has a certain appeal (minus the Trumpiness, of course)
I don’t know anything about it, so I’m probably being very rose tinted too

I like meeting people and I'm a member of the U3A which has great activities for older folk. But I also belong to things where I meet and chat to younger people and I enjoy that. I'm also very grateful that once I get home and close my front door I can be as quiet as I like. The thought of 24 hour socialising with only older people is a nightmare. I like to be able to read, paint or sew in peace. I was reminded of Dante's 9 circles of Hell. So I looked them up. These people seem to be stuck in 2&3 grin www.penguinrandomhouse.com/articles/a-visitors-guide-to-dantes-nine-circles-of-hell/

Witzend Mon 13-Feb-23 13:06:08

Presumably it’ll be a Marmite thing - love it or hate it. It certainly wouldn’t be my choice.

BlueBelle Mon 13-Feb-23 13:20:17

It would be my idea of hell too I like to mix with people of all ages I couldn’t even bear an UK complex which I m sure would be a lot quieter
I need my space and a chance to meet people when I want to not be enforced into constant jolly, jolly activities

Theexwife The USA's elderly population can probably be counted in tens of millions. 80,000 isn't very many.

LRavenscroft Tue 14-Feb-23 09:20:10

Someone I know was on the committee of such a complex and there was one very awkward rude person also on the committee who vetoed everything that was suggested. As soon as they were no longer able to sit on the committee the whole atmosphere changed. Just because a person is over 60, it does not mean that they have learned to give, take, share and hold hands nicely as is taught in Kindergarten.

ExperiencedNotOld Tue 14-Feb-23 09:24:50

It’s on Prime as well. I watched 10 minutes a while back. Yuk.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 14-Feb-23 11:21:33

Definitely not for me. I’m with sodapop.

pascal30 Tue 14-Feb-23 11:34:29

the idea of 24 hour piped music is ghastly,, I like my own peaceful sanctuary.. and a mixed age range of people when I do choose to go out.. it's all so unatural..

pascal30 Tue 14-Feb-23 11:50:00

unnatural,,
