St Valentine…..did you get a card or gift?

Over 30 years ago on this day I gave birth to our second child our first son.
My husband left the hospital at 4.00 am and returned at lunchtime with a courgette in a brown paper bag, he said the flowers were all outrageously priced because it was Valentine’s Day!
Never been quite sure why a courgette, it remains a mystery.
Since then I have always told him not to bother despite our finances being in much better shape now!
It is now just our sons birthday but perhaps secretly I would like a card, flowers or a little treat😉

We don’t do cards really now but we had a meal deal which we have just enjoyed. We’ll open the wine from it at the weekend. I also got us a large orchid we can enjoy together.

We always exchange cards, as an another poster said his is always more thoughtful than mine. Since we retired we’ve got into the habitat of going out for breakfast and then having a wander somewhere, anywhere really. As the sun was shining we strolled an almost empty beach before sitting with coffee overlooking the water. We usually go for memories rather than ‘stuff’ now, suits us.

No I never had anything when I was married as far as I can remember
My adult grandson bought his mum some lovely roses which was so nice as his dad died when he was a little ‘un

I love the courgette story Sago brilliant

The Tesco delivery arrived this morning with roses and daffodils and the delivery woman told my husband she was impressed. He was honest and told her that I’d placed the order myself.

But, fleur it doesn't have to be some massive commercialised thing. We have done cards and small gifts since we met and see no reason to stop because Valentine's day is more commercialised.

This year it was Bojangles chocolates and a card.

Fleurpepper Tue 14-Feb-23 18:06:37

Absolutely and totally. Unfortunately it has become a massively commercial thing. Glad it is not for you.

I shall always remember my first Valentine's card, from my English BF, when I was 14.

Fleurpepper Tue 14-Feb-23 18:09:36

''Valentine's Day is one of the biggest commercial opportunities for marketers. With spending expected to reach $22 billion this year in the US alone, you need to leverage this romantic holiday for your business. Not every Valentine's Day marketing idea works in e-commerce, though.''

Those roses upset me most- grown on the other side of the world, using masses of water in huge greenhouses, and using loads of chemicals, then flown across the world to be sold.

In just over 53 years of marriage, I never once had a Valentine card or present. I did it the first year, but never again. He always remembered my birthday and our anniversary, but had no time for St.Valentine.

Juggernaut Tue 14-Feb-23 18:33:12

Fleurpepper,
My husband wouldn't dream of buying me flowers for St Valentine's Day.
The only reason I get jewellery every year (almost) is because it is the day our son and only child was born, not because he falls for the hype!

Love the courgette story. 🤣

No Valentines cards for me. But I feel sorry for my daughter. She’s young but no bf. I used to send the children V cards until they ordered me to stop 😂

As has already been noted, the day is a sad reminder for those of us whose valentine has predeceased them. I dealt with it by buying myself flowers as a reminder of the many bunches bought for me over the years - and I am so grateful for that.

Grammaretto Tue 14-Feb-23 18:44:49

Aldom so touching and tender.
I may tune into the folk club on zoom tonight. We've been promised some tearful tunes.
I've lit the fire, poured the wine and have bought myself my favourite chocs.

Happy Valentines Day everyone.

Secretly I never enjoyed those expensive dinners for 2 at the restaurants. It was strangely awkward . So many equally awkward couples.

Sadly I have no one to buy me a gift/card today. But no matter.

Ditto - town was in-your-face valentines stuff when I went in earlier.

Luckygirl3 Tue 14-Feb-23 18:46:14

I bought myself some daffodils though!

Kim19 Tue 14-Feb-23 18:50:47

This is a smiley and happy day for me. My husband said he would buy me roses any day I liked except St Valentine's (a piece of American nonsense apparently!) That was when we were engaged and still I married him. No regrets whatsoever but it was an on going joke with us every year.

I bought a card for DH a couple of weeks ago, when I bought the February birthday cards, but forgot all about it.
We said nothing this morning but came to walk me home from my volunteering with a single rose and a bar of chocolate. We've just had a Chinese takeaway.
He then told me that he was going fishing for the next few days, I knew he was buttering me up for something!

HowVeryDareYou2 Tue 14-Feb-23 18:52:06

My husband and I exchanged cards. He said he wasn't going to spend £27 on a bunch of roses (he's off work and not being paid, so fair enough)

Forsythia Tue 14-Feb-23 21:41:54

I received a lovely bunch of spring flowers, my DH always buys me some and I’m very lucky. We had a special meal cooked by me. My DDs also had flowers from their other halves and meals cooked for them. We all count ourselves lucky and appreciate our menfolk,

Grannmarie Tue 14-Feb-23 22:00:33

Aveline

My Gran always used to give me a Valentine's card. Signed 'Love Gran.' No mystery!
Found a card and box of chocs had been left for me by a secret admirer. DH looking smug wink

I send Valentine's cards to our three DGC every year. I don't sign them though, I write the old verse,
If our names you wish to know
Count the kisses down below..
Xxxx and Xxxx

For Gran and Papa. I also write SWALK on the envelopes, and put love heart confetti inside the cards.

Sentimental, 💕💕💕, I know...

A card with money in flowers bought a few days ago and a cook at home meal from Sainsbury's.
My DH didn't get married until he was in his forties and has always been romantic.

I would find it very strange if my husband gave me money. All our accounts are in joint names so we can take out what we like . Many many years ago DH gave me a cheque for a hundred pound for Christmas and I just thought it was daft .

Redhead56 Thu 16-Feb-23 00:06:11

All our accounts are joint too my DH hopes I will spend it on me but I don't want for anything.
I never do spend money on myself it gets spent on our GDs.

icanhandthemback Thu 16-Feb-23 11:20:09

We gave it a miss this year. We both agreed to do that as we were so busy we didn't need the extra pressure.

Rileysnana Thu 16-Feb-23 11:21:42

No cards or pressies for me. No one to get them for me. I was never one for Valentine's though either. It's ok when you're younger and at school. The anticipation of secret admirers. When you're in a relationship what's the point. You're together day in day out. Little tokens or gestures mean more when they're not expected.

winifred01 Thu 16-Feb-23 11:23:33

Married 63 years , never once had a Valentines card!
