My grandchildren eat a lot of sushi, Mexican food or all sorts, curries, souvlakis, kimchi etc and think nothing of it but I had never even heard of those foods when I was young. We had a pretty boring diet except for I reckon the desserts were good then. They didn’t even have hamburgers when I was really young and as for chicken - that was for Christmas if you were lucky.

A lot of mince and tatties. A lot of seafood Father was a fisherman. Seasonal vegetables from the garden. And rice puddings. Nothing else sticks in my mind only the memories of the smell and dread of fish again….anything from lobster to mackerel.
I now enjoy it again but never believed I would.

No garden, no allotment, Liverpool terraced house. 7 children. Not much money. We ate very well as in nutritious, never had roast beef but were good friends with the greengrocer. We ate what we were given and the same for all of us, none of this pandering that seems so prevalent today. No crisps and snacks. Three meals a day, sat around a table

Home made, all of it. Happy, healthy children became happy healthy adults, all of us grateful for what we have now and still benefitting from our roots

Living out in the sticks we had to cycle 2miles to catch the school bus, so breakfast was early and usually cooked. Plenty of veg from the garden, eggs and meat from the farm or game, mum never seemed to spend much on food it was just there.
Sunday was always a roast then leftovers for a few days, hot pot or casserole, later in week.

We were very active kids so high calorie food was the order of the day, it was a cold house too so keeping warm used calories. The good old days?, we were luckier than many, nobody worried what you were doing as long as you were home at mealtimes.

Vesta curry was a treat in our house and a Greek curry my mum made with beef mince was an exotic treat too. We had soups usually with lamb neck or oxtail and Scouse made with whatever meat mum could afford. She cooked it in a massive pan put a basic crust on it and baked it in a big mixing bowl. It was delicious I still make it now and Irish lamb hotpot which is also delicious.
My mum made the best with what she had and shopped daily. I don’t do a big shop either just a couple of days in advance planning meals. That’s were the freezer comes in handy my mum didn’t have one in our early years she had a larder.
My son and daughter and their families do cook and bake a lot. The choice they have now compared to what we had is unrecognisable. The food I grew up on was extremely basic and limited but it fed us well. I cooked the food of my childhood as a single parent getting divorced those old fashioned recipes did me proud.
