Just that really.

The members of the Royal Family that didn't give the Prince/Princess title to their children knew that, in this day and age, it would be more of a hindrance than a help. They are right. They will all be encouraged to get a job.
Whereas, Princess Lillibet is obviously destined to be a "Kardashian".

Blossoming

Anne’s children are not Prince and Princess Casdon. This only used to apply to the children of the monarch’s sons.

How about the Princess Royal before Anne she could have called herself Lady hardwood but she used Princess.

With two small children to nurture, how can H&M be so bothered about the hoi polloi? Why the symbiotic feeding frenzy all the time?

Devorgilla Thu 09-Mar-23 16:00:34

If my American son in law is anything to go by throwing the title Prince or Princess around will result in the comment - "and I should be impressed by that because....?"

Jaberwok Thu 09-Mar-23 16:04:56

The previous Princess Royal was Countess of Harewood, only daughter of George Vth. Think your iPlayer put up the wrong spelling Yammy! Mine nearly did!!!

Just shows further their disgraceful smearing of the RF during their tacky Oprah interview where they basically said Archie wasn’t given the title of Prince due to being mixed race.

The pair of them are just awful.

Jaberwok Thu 09-Mar-23 18:03:03

You're right, they are just awful! Psychedelic drugs anyone??!! Actually it's difficult to believe. Poor RF, particularly poor King.

vegansrock Thu 09-Mar-23 18:04:51

Those who believe in the monarchy should give their heads a wobble- members of the Rf don’t have to do anything apart from be born into it. They don’t have to have any qualifications or apply for it - they just are royal. As such H and Ms children are grandchildren of the monarch and have every right to these made up titles. The supporters of this feudal system should be tugging their forelocks at its members not slagging them off - you can’t pick and choose your royals , that makes a mockery of an hereditary system which you support.

Vintagenonna Thu 09-Mar-23 18:13:28

You have a solid point, vegansrock.

Calendargirl Thu 09-Mar-23 19:22:54

you can’t pick and choose your royals

No, more’s the pity, as the vast majority would be ditching the Sussexes after all their whinging and griping.

It’s they who are picking and choosing the select parts of being royal that they like, and abandoning the rest.

Americans give their children bizarre names. Archie is a common (in both senses) abbreviation, Lilibet was a baby name. I bet there are heaps of American girls named Princess. This fulfils Meghan’s desire to live as a Hollywood/Disney character.

There are lots of Archies around, it's very popular here in the UK. It has had a renaissance over the past 10 years or so.
I wonder how many were registered as Archibald?

Cary Grant's real name was Archibald (Archie) Leach.

imaround Thu 09-Mar-23 20:21:04

"Americans give their children bizarre names. "

hmm

In the UK, Archie was #9 on the list of most popular boy names and Lilly was #7 for 2021.

In the US in 2021, Archie didn't break the top 100 most popular names and Lily was #31.

In fact, you can look here and see that the most popular names in the US are pretty standard and not at all unusual.

Not a Princess among them by the way.

lyleLyle Thu 09-Mar-23 20:40:29

Don’t let those facts get in the way of the silly stereotypes, imaround. Best to let the xenophobic digs go unchallenged.

Thanks, I never know if it is Harewood or Harwood.Or how to pronounce it.

Joseanne Thu 09-Mar-23 21:00:00

I don't think I would necessarily put tradition and conservatism above personal choice for my child's name, but I do think names convey a certain image. Lilibet and Diana must surely have been chosen with a certain purpose in mind. I just feel that the expectations of how the child should turn out might actually cause unnecessary pressure because people would be looking for the same qualities as in her namesakes.

Lexisgranny Thu 09-Mar-23 21:09:19

I wonder how many babies are given names that raise the eyebrows of others, in order to appease/gain the approval of a relative, generally a wealthy one? Furthermore, I wonder how many children hate those names

Jaberwok Thu 09-Mar-23 21:53:18

It's spelt Harewood, and pronounced HARwood. The Countess called herself Princess as she was one in her right, like Princess Anne. Unlike Princess Michael who only has this title courtesy of her husband.

paddyann54 Thu 09-Mar-23 22:41:15

JoseanneNot a fan of any royal but surely his childs names are just a tribute to his Granny and his mum.Its quite normal here in Scotland for generations of families to carry the same first names
.My father never had a son but at the last count we had 19 cousins and children of cousins and grandchildren of ours with Dads name either as a first name of a middle name .Just because he was very much loved.
There was no financial gain for any of them or any expectation of financial gain.Thats what people do ,call their kids after loved ones

mokryna Thu 09-Mar-23 22:41:15

I don’ t understand.
Surly a baby doesn’t get baptized Princess if they are a titled royalty, do they?

Eg Charlotte Elizabeth Diana or Katie P’s Princess Tiaamii

Therefore, Lilibet baptized Princess Lilibet,
as the title Princess is given would be Princess Princess Lilibet now.

Grannmarie Thu 09-Mar-23 22:47:40

Princess Michael...
such a title makes me think of male 'ownership ',
like OfFred, in The Handmaid's Tale.

Joseanne Thu 09-Mar-23 22:49:46

paddyann54 It's telling then that there's no Doria or Thomas amongst the names chosen.

It’s common for family christian names to go through the generations in Wales too, but not common for children to be called diminutives of the original name - so they would be eg David, but known as Dai - or in a royal family scenario, Elizabeth, known as Lilibet.
