But there have been notifiable infectious diseases long before covid happened. Should public health measures be a matter for central government, local authorities, or private conscience?

I hope you don’t think I was being selfish Marydoll. I was trying to make the point, perhaps somewhat dryly, to the poster who says there are other things to worry about other than Covid. My point is that Covid is the bigger worry because people who have died aren’t able to worry about anything else.

Farzanah Fri 31-Mar-23 17:01:05

Don’t despair Marydoll there are plenty of people who don’t think like this, and the posters who prefer follow their own skewed agenda are in the minority.

What did we do before covid when we felt ill? I can't believe that people are still testing themselves. None of the tests actually determine what ails you. They only pick up the remnants of other viruses, and we carry roughly a couple of pounds in weight of various bacterias and viruses in our gut all the time. Has everyone forgotten what it feels like to have a bad cold or flu? I had a bad cold three weeks ago and I felt like death warmed-up for 4-5 days, trying to drink plenty but not having an appetite which would not have helped make me feel any better. Eventually, it lessened and I'm fine now.

Maddy, it certainly wasn't you I meant.
It was those, who think it is a government plot to control us all and refuse to test.
The comment, I never test really riled me.

I don't expect anyone to change their lives to protect people like me, who are immunocompromised, just show some common sense, humanity and a little compassion.

The onus is on me to keep myself safe (and of course my clinicians).

Are you a virologist effalump?

What? Really? So you believe that the Covid test doesn’t show when Covid is present, but picks up the remnants of other viruses?
Well, I’ve not heard that one before. I call hogwash on that. (And that is me being extremely polite).

maddyone Fri 31-Mar-23 18:07:00

Thank you for clarification Marydoll. I think I was being a bit over sensitive. It’s because I have friends whose health is compromised that I do still test, and also because I have asthma, if I get a cough, which I do frequently, I like to be sure it’s not Covid.

So, can you tell me exactly how I will know if I have a bad, cold, fly or covid? What are the different symptoms to look out for? Oh, I know. I’ll wait till the second week and if I find my condition worsening to the point where I need to call an ambulance* I’ll know it’s covid and I’ve got it bad.
*oh hang on a minute…I’ll be lucky if I can get an ambulance and even luckier if I can get treated without waiting in a corridor for several hours…

I also have friends with compromised health, and find some attitudes selfish and misinformed, but covid threads always attract them.
Mostly best not to dignify with a reply but occasionally it’s difficult not to.

In the far East people have always worn masks if they have a cold or other sort of virus out of common courtesy to others. Something we could learn from here. I did actually think that it would become part of our culture too, but sadly overestimated peoples compassion towards others sad.

I’ve had the four injections , and Covid three times…. first was mild…..second was bloody awful ….and third was mild.
My husband just decided to hibernate for three years , but still expected feeding and cleaning and me doing it all. Hence my infections and his good health . He thought it was a good idea. Me….not so much!!

MaisieD. I don’t think she said that she didn’t understand why numbers were rising bi read it as she didn’t understand why the government were no longer testing when it is rising so much at the moment.

Just a bit of info about Covid testing kits - Barnardo’s shops are selling kits cheaply. I’m not sure whether that's nationally or just around Greater Manchester.

So sorry about suffering from COVID. My son came home from work yesterday feeling awful. Today he tested positive for COVID and tells quite a few workers have “flu” so here in St Lucia I would imagine travellers tourists and returners may have brought it. The doctor was more worried about me so I a. Now living away from son downstairs. We are wearing masks again! Such bad luck for anyone who gets it

swampy1961 Fri 31-Mar-23 20:57:18

Interestingly I received a letter saying that I qualified under NHS criteria for certain treatments if I caught COVID and a testing kit would follow (which it did) and if I had COVID symptoms to test and advise the NHS COVID team where I presume I would then be directed to wherever for treatment! So it's still out there but I suspect it will eventually become one of the flu variants that is vaccinated against against each year.

Apart from feeling horrendous with covid...now developed paresthenia ...didn't know it was that, until telephone chat with doctor..arms and legs tingling/numb...feeling really down and tired also.
I'm 70..fit,walk garden..for myself and to earn a little also...vegetarian, eat healthily.....so as far as I'm concerned...its out there...and we are all vulnerable.

Primrose53 Fri 31-Mar-23 21:39:21

I haven’t worn masks since they said they were no longer mandatory. I am a fainter as I have low blood pressure and for that reason I cannot wear a mask. Wearing a mask won’t stop me from catching covid and it won’t stop me passing it on either.

They have worn masks for a long time to protect themselves against airborne disease but another reason was because of the pollution in cities.

Coco51 Fri 31-Mar-23 23:24:13

It’s stll out there although people in general seem to think the’re safe now. The nurses and doctors are still wearung masks and ask patients to do so. When DD took DGS for a hospital check up she had to test him first.

Data shown on gov. website are almost worthless if vast majority who fall ill either don't test or don't register a result. I know for certain our local hospital always has Covid positive in its ITU and HDU facilities each week. So its a myth that these days Covid is not a serious illness anymore. For some it is a killer. Also the long term effects are unknown even for mild infections I still exercise caution as I did before.
Yes there are other serious diseases we live along side and notifiable diseases too but I can't underestimate the devastating effect Covid has had worldwide and my heart goes out to everyone affected by it.

If they are so courteous perhaps they could stop spitting and allowing children to defecate in front of you.
A vision seared into my brain at the Terracotta Army complex.
Those pictures you see of the polluted sky in Beijing don’t convey the smell.
