What is your favourite word?

I like the name Rita. I never hear it or see it written down without thinking of shining white satin.

Ailidh, I read somewhere that odd numbers are better liked than even numbers. I know what you mean about numbers. 4 and 8 are unpopular whereas 3 and 5 are popular. My son's house is number 33, and I think 33 is extraordinarily propitious.

Chang Kai Shek (Old Chinese politician) always strikes a chord with me. No idea why. I just like the sound of the words.

I'm with Witzend with Balderdash and Juliet with Floozy. I think that there was/is? a range of underwear with Floozy in the name - so enticing!

For instance Ailidh and Kate seem to me to like their fav words purely because of the sounds, especially 'trollop'.

I hadn't considered but you're right, it is the sound of the word that I love. It resonates somehow, more than just hearing but not as far as seeing the sound.

The letter 'e' and the number '5' also resonate somehow. I don't have a verb for what they do/how I respond but I'm pretty sure that if one were to monitor my brain activity it would flare at e and 5, and flocon.

I give up! Floozy. Just as well I only usually say it rather than write it!

My current favourites are Hurtigruten and the the name of Artist of the Year judge Tai-Shan Schierenberg. Some days one or the other goes round and round in my head, which can be quite annoying!

Oh what a lovely interesting thread! Outrageous is a lovely word, it just cannot be said without its meaning being obvious. Cockwomble looks better written than said, but great word. I agree about Emily Thornberry as a name; sounds like a kindly aunt from a Dickens novel. Charles Dance is a lovely name too.

Your right Caleo they make my imagination work and are so exotic. I've looked up and found the poem they are volcanoes in South America.

My favourite words are accurate and outrageous. My most hated word is moist.

Mine are actually French words! We did French poets at A level and one poem I remember had the words 'crepuscule' and 'terebinthe' describing an evening in the warm South of France. Can't remember whether the poet was Verlaine or Baudelaire, but, no matter, I have loved those words ever since!

What I would like to know, but will never find out, is whether we are attached to certain sounds as pure sounds, or if we are attached to sounds because of their associated meanings.

Mine is definately because when I hear it in the small pocket it is spoken of I know I am nearly home.
When I was young I loved a poem about words but can only remember a small part of it
"Chimboranzo, Cotopaxi took me by the hand."
Does anyone recognise the poem?
I also like Xanadu again it sets my imagination off. I'm probably on a completely different path from everyone else with their wide knowledge of English words DH is the wordsmith in our house.
