Today is my granddaughter's 18th birthday. I've spent a happy day with her and my family. Present opening this morning, followed by lunch at a delightful Indian restaurant in Oxford. Eighteen years ago I was present at her birthday. Her parents very thoughtfully asked me to cut the umbilical cord. I felt very privileged to have that honour. I had been widowed exactly five weeks previously. This was a precious moment, never to be forgotten. When my granddaughter was tiny she used to point to her tummy button and say, 'You made this'.
