A comment on another thread about dunking a Nice biscuit got me thinking.
I (to my shame) have always dunked. I did remember not to when my D’s took me to the Ritz for a landmark birthday but in everyday life, give me a cuppa and give me a biscuit and I’m anybody’s.
But which biscuit is best for dunking? Does it depend on the beverage?
Tea biscuits are clearly streets ahead for tea, but ginger nuts run them close.
Hobnobs too, although they can be fragile, therefore risky.
hmmhmm
Or have you raised your hands in horror at this breach of etiquette? grin

Here , hear Aveline …I think biscuits should be crisp ….but I also don’t like soggy cereal… so very little milk!

I never drink tea, usually fresh coffee. Ginger biscuits were made for dunking , in my view. But it is an art. You get to know that precise time when it is just right and well before it might break. My mother would not allow such behaviour and so my version was to bite a ginger biscuit and then take some coffee, so got around it that way!! Of course , I do as I please these days but still feel slightly defiant as I sit here and dunk the ginger biscuit! could never try with chocolate biscuits though! Each to their own

Only at home and in private! Chocolate biscuits are the best!

Yes I do (although definitely shouldn't 🤫)
I even occasionally dunk buttered toast in tea 😊
Any biscuit that I like is fair game and larger biscuits (digestives & similar) are broken in half first, less chance of them breaking in the cup.

Rich tea, yes, ginger biscuits no, I love the biscuit as it is.

Growing0ldDisgracefully Sat 08-Apr-23 11:27:09

Yes, an unashamed dunker, both for preference and now to help protect my failing gnashers.

Twopence Sat 08-Apr-23 11:20:14

I was never a dunker, except for ginger nuts, but I must confess that I have recently started to dunk all biscuits. DH on the other hand has always been a dunker.

Always dunk a biscuit, especially custard creams and digestive. But tbh most of mine get dipped in the tea or coffee.
No matter where, I just don’t care 😂😂

Have never understood dunking. Soggy biscuits which then fall into your drink before you can get it up to your mouth. Yak!

My flapjack sometimes needed a dunk

DIL used to make the best flapjack! But she hasn't made any for ages, must give her a gentle nudge 🙂

Ginger nuts are wasted on dunking they are too good! As are short bread especially homemade ones digestives are good for dunking they have the right texture.

Yeah, ginger nuts are great dunked, shortbread biccies are just asking to be dunked, so I do.😁
Rich tea? Haven’t tried those yet but I will.
Am a Southerner born and bred so not a Northern thing.
I even dunk fig rolls. Shameless😂

I would dunk anytime anywhere with anyone as long as it wasn’t chocolate covered biscuits.

HeavenLeigh Fri 07-Apr-23 15:56:39

Oh yuk never, if I eat a biscuit I like to eat it as it is no dunking for me.

NanaDana Fri 07-Apr-23 15:53:37

Used to dunk, but daren't have biscuits in the house now, otherwise I'd be piling on the pounds again. Love the Peter Kay sketch about biscuit dunking. Great observational comedy. "Rich tea? The one dip wonder"...

Whitewavemark2 Fri 07-Apr-23 15:14:12

Oh and croissants are nice dunked as well. I of course dunk all British type biscuits.

dogsmother Fri 07-Apr-23 15:10:42

Of course I dunk. Also been known to spread butter on digestives …..

Whitewavemark2 Fri 07-Apr-23 15:07:14

Of course. Biscotti is also much better soaked in coffee.

timetogo2016 Fri 07-Apr-23 15:04:04

I am a dunker,biscuits and chocolate,only at home though.

Ailidh Wed 05-Apr-23 12:19:54

Never. I don't see the point of sodden, soggy biscuits.

crazyH Wed 05-Apr-23 11:43:53

No, I don’t dunk - biscuits are meant to be crunched !

Foxygloves Wed 05-Apr-23 11:40:52

Blossoming Wed 05-Apr-23 11:19:56

Only at home.

Callistemon21 Wed 05-Apr-23 10:21:17

Not Nice biscuits, they collapse into a soggy mess.
I'd have to be desperate to eat one anyway.

In fact, I rarely dunk and try not to eat biscuits now. But ginger nuts always needed dunking or else you could break a tooth on them. The new ginger biscuits are not so tough.

Digestive and Hob Nobs are best 😁

However, my mother would tell me off if I dunked so I'm cautious about it.

DD1 once dropped a whole custard cream biscuit into my tea. I didn't know till I got to the bottom. Ate it with a spoon. Might have given her a spoonful too.

Back then I don't think I did dunk. Still don't as a matter of course, just occasionally for v hard biscuits. My flapjack sometimes needed a dunk. GS1 – who was very shy as a small child – soon learned to come over and get his bit. I was chuffed that he showed this trust in me and my taste 🥰

lixy Wed 05-Apr-23 10:02:07

I do dunk. My favourite is a custard cream after a swift dunk in my coffee - have to get the timing right or it doesn't work at all.
DH has 2 Rich Tea with his morning coffee and dunks those as a matter of course. He enjoys the jeopardy he says!

Apart from the Rich Tea we have a 'no biscuit' rule at home unless I make them when the GC's are visiting, but every now and then a packet arrives somehow!
