Not My King

I thought I'd start a new thread because I don't want to spoil the pleasure of the monarchists or let the thread turn into a slanging match.

What will you be doing on Coronation Day? Will you watch it for the historical value? Will you hide from every TV? Are you planning a day out?

Depending on the weather we may do some jobs in the garden and sit in the sun, go out to somewhere miles away from TVs and celebrations, or visit the empty shops. Tbh I'd sit in a dark room for the whole day if it was the only way to avoid the expensive farce.

Weather permitting I will sit in the garden with a glass of wine with family and neighbours. I will watch it on the news - don't expect I can avoid it.

NotAGran55 Tue 11-Apr-23 19:32:17

My husband will be at work on the Saturday and as I would rather watch paint dry I will be decorating the utility room whilst listening to an audiobook.
We will see it in the news I expect.

Of course, it's only accident of birth that we now have King Charles. If Prince Andrew had been the first-born he would now be King. Happy with that?

sharonarnott Tue 11-Apr-23 18:00:49

I will never recognise him as my king and will be avoiding the whole thing. There are plenty of things that need my attention around the home. Looks like I will be busy smile

I will be celebrating with friends and watching it all, enjoying our fantastic history being made 👑.

volver3 Tue 11-Apr-23 17:42:22

I don't think we should be concentrating on whether Charles is a good guy or not, or whether his wife is "Queenly" enough, or how much money he has.

The problem with a monarch as HoS is that he could be Jack the Ripper for all we know and there is nothing we can do about it. We can never oust him from his position and we know who's coming next after him. And who's coming next after that. We don't get to have any say in who is the face of our country, only the Royalists do. And they seem happy to trade in accountability for a nice parade.

Having a hereditary HoS is untenable in a democratic society, whether he is rich as Croesus or doesn't have 2 pennies to rub together.

Happy to admit I have a dull humdrum life, like most people. And I suspect the curmudgeons on here have similarly dull lives but have to make themselves feel better by making unpleasant remarks like calling the king 'Charles the Turd'. How rude and unnecessary. I am quite happy with my dreary existence and welcome the bit of cheer that the coronation will bring.

Kathmaggie Tue 11-Apr-23 17:24:34

Can’t seem to summon up much enthusiasm for it tbh. All this will H&M attend or not doesn’t help! Will raise a glass to them tho - they will need all the luck in the world

Siope

Not that Merkel was a head of state, but then neither were at least half the people mentioned in this thread.

I do think that the reason Trump, Johnson and so on keep getting trotted out is that many people have no idea what an elected HoS would do, or what the difference is between the roles of Trump and Robinson.

TiggyW Tue 11-Apr-23 16:58:20

Perhaps we need another referendum?!!!!!!! 😂
On William and Kate’s wedding day, we climbed Helm Crag in the Lakes. Fantastic. Miles away from the nearest TV…

Siope Tue 11-Apr-23 16:57:11

Double aaaaagggggghhhhh!

Never a Robinson, or a Merkel, or a Finnbogadóttir.

grannyro Tue 11-Apr-23 16:53:04

I will be on holiday in Madagascar when he is crowned but if I was here I would watch it. Nobody does pomp and ceremony like the United Kingdom. I find it moving and I would rather have Charles as a figurehead instead of some awful President like Trump! I actually have a friend who is coming over from America to see it specially!

volver3 Tue 11-Apr-23 16:24:32

Can I just point out, if the people who want to watch the coronation object to being told they have dull lives, those of us who don't want to watch the coronation object to being called boring curmudgeons.

Just saying.

Lindy Tue 11-Apr-23 16:20:50

Me too Gillycats

tictacnana Tue 11-Apr-23 16:14:48

I”ll d my best to miss it. It’s not so much him as her that I object to. He was always going to be king but she isn’t the queen. She’s something else entirely.

FannyCornforth Tue 11-Apr-23 16:05:57

🤦‍♀️

volver3 Tue 11-Apr-23 16:03:38

Aaaarrrrrgggggggh!!!!!

I am a monarchist and will watch the Coronation. From start to finish. It is our history and tradition. It costs but the Monarchy is an institution that brings so many tourists to Great Britain. I read the replies of the Republicans here, some are lefties others are SNP or just not interested. They are entitled to their view but I find them rather boring people and the thought of us being a Republic makes me shudder.

Who would be President? Jeremy Corbyn? Keir Starmer? The very thought of it appalls me.

Long live the King!!!!

Just imagine what

Parsley3 Tue 11-Apr-23 15:56:32

The RF is pretty rich though considering that through the generations they only do charitable work.

Callistemon21 Tue 11-Apr-23 15:47:06

*Whenever people post about the RF’s “huge wealth” I feel the need to point out that they are nowhere near the richest people in the country*

If people are lucky enough to be rich - good for them, as long as I am not forced to pay my taxes towards their upkeep or their relatives generation after generation.

You're not.

Check it out.

The TV will be off, I shall be nowhere near anything to do with it. Once the Queen went that was it for me.

Republican numbers have really grown since the Queen passing.

I think I will leave it there on my feelings as I would not be polite

I see the usual curmudgeon are out in force, making a virtue out of not watching anything to do with royalty and making nasty remarks about those who will be happy and proud to watch the coronation on 6 May.
