Not My King

I thought I'd start a new thread because I don't want to spoil the pleasure of the monarchists or let the thread turn into a slanging match.

What will you be doing on Coronation Day? Will you watch it for the historical value? Will you hide from every TV? Are you planning a day out?

Depending on the weather we may do some jobs in the garden and sit in the sun, go out to somewhere miles away from TVs and celebrations, or visit the empty shops. Tbh I'd sit in a dark room for the whole day if it was the only way to avoid the expensive farce.

LRavenscroft Sat 08-Apr-23 22:27:19

I'll be out during the day as I always am on a fine spring day. However, I shall be watching highlights on the 6 p.m. news. After all, it is part of my country's history and if my country is good enough to live in, then I shall respect and follow its historical events.

volver3 Sat 08-Apr-23 22:26:06

Did all those moaning on here about the cost, moan as much about H& Ms wedding.

Yes, we left the country on holiday for a long weekend. Any royals, all royals. It's all a pantomime, that's what the monarchists seem to not get.

lixy Sat 08-Apr-23 22:17:00

I have no idea what we will actually be doing that weekend but taking part in celebrations will not be on our agenda.
I will probably catch the highlights as part of the news but certainly won't watch the whole thing.
Charles is my King and I wish him well but really can't be doing with all the palaver.
I just can't stand the hours and hours and hours of incessant chatter leading up to it and the analysis of who wore what and who gave a sideways glance to who.

The last Coronation was a young , quite pretty woman , this is a rather unattractive elderly grumpy man , it won’t be the same ! But no doubt I’ll be watching for the history
I remember the technicolour film of the Queens Coronation in the cinema, and it was fascinating, because of the vivid colours , and the music

Feel like I do about snow.
Seen enough of it.

I may flick on and off. That is probably it.

HettyBetty Sat 08-Apr-23 22:02:54

Anti monarchist and no time for religion so it's a no from me.

I will be working for part of the day, no intention of missing a day's work because of shenanigans the other side of the country. Being self employed helps with that. Will also go out with DH if the weather is good.

Really grateful not to have a TV on occasions like this.

Me and mine, will be celebrating and giving a toast to the conti uation of 1000 years of history. Unless you give up your British citizenship, he will be your King.

vegansrock Sat 08-Apr-23 21:40:16

I will be gardening with my earpods in listening to music or a podcast. If raining I will be on my sewing machine listening to music or a podcast. The coronation is a complete con as far as I’m concerned, completely unnecessary showing off. What is the point of it? He is King already it’s a load of mumbo jumbo.

Floradora9 Sat 08-Apr-23 21:31:57

DH and I were comparing the fuss there was in our part of the UK , Scotland , over the 1953 compared to this one. We had lots of events , bonfires and services . All the school children got a mug and a pencil case with chocolate in it . Apart from some groups for older people there will be nothing as far as I can see this time .
We got our first TV for Queen Elizabeth's coronation . As far as I was concerned it was pretty boring, but we did have a house full of visitors crammed in to watch our tiny TV. It was a freezing cold day too .

Grandma70s Sat 08-Apr-23 21:25:12

I don’t really understand why people are so strongly against it either. I certainly don’t kowtow to anybody. They are just people who happen to be born (or married) into a dynasty that is part of our history. I don’t really mind whether we are a monarchy or republic, but we are living in a monarchy at the moment and I am happy with that. Even if you are a republican, I don’t see why you wouldn’t watch the coronation just as a national event. It’s the hostility that puzzles me.

Kim19 Sat 08-Apr-23 21:04:16

Current plan is to dip in and out of the proceedings around my other/normal activities. That's unless I get a better offer, of course! Guess I'm just plain nosey and curious.

Farzanah Sat 08-Apr-23 21:00:59

As I was at the Co-op store today a couple were loudly bemoaning that the Coronation tat on sale was made in China 😀 Says it all really.
I will be in deepest Cornwall walking along the beaches.

volver3 Sat 08-Apr-23 19:40:34

I don't understand why people are so against it.

Because we are Republicans and think it's a medieval ceremony which means nothing and is going to cost a ridiculous amount of money?

nexus63 Sat 08-Apr-23 19:39:32

i am sure i will be able to find some old episodes of judge judy or some music videos from the 80s to watch on youtube that day. i can bet in the middle of the coronation palaver charles will be wishing he could do the same.

grannyrebel7 Sat 08-Apr-23 19:33:05

I will be watching every minute of it. I don't understand why people are so against it. It will be a fantastic historical event unfolding right before our eyes. I'm really looking forward to it.

Chakotay Sat 08-Apr-23 19:29:45

I shall watch it Charles is my King and Camilla is my Queen

Primrose53 Sat 08-Apr-23 19:27:48

I may or may not. Will make my mind up on the day.

^What will you be doing on Coronation Day? Will you watch it for the historical value? Will you hide from every TV? Are you planning a day out^ ?

If OP’s intention had genuinely been a thread in which GNetters were invited to share their plans for the Coronation Day, why entitle it Not My King ?
It seems unnecessarily contentious and designed to provoke the expression of yet more “Not My King” sentiments.
I thought “Oh here we go again. Can I honestly face 4 more weeks of this? “

I noted that the Royalists had a thread and thought it would be good for the Republicans also had one. By keeping them separate I thought it would be possible to stop arguments. Also I have no wish to spoil the enjoyment of those who wish to watch/take part.

He is not my king. I am a citizen of the United Kingdom which happens to have a head of state that is called a king or queen. I choose not to accept him as my king. I would not stand up for him, curtsey or kow-tow in any other way. Just because he happened to be born in a certain bed does not give him the right to be anything other than a citizen of the United Kingdom. As for his wish to encourage people to do more for each other perhaps he should start by voluntarily paying inheritance tax which could be ringfenced for the NHS, education and social care. If he put his money where his mouth is then perhaps I would view him with more respect

grannypiper Sat 08-Apr-23 19:11:29

I will be watching every moment, the Union flag will be hoisted, the bunting will be hung and the union teapot will be in use. My best friend is flying in so we can watch together on the Tuesday after the coronation we shall fly down to London to gather with friends from all of the U.K and the rest of the world to celebrate our new Head of the armed forces and King.

Ladyleftfieldlover Sat 08-Apr-23 18:54:30

I’ll probably watch bits of it as the day goes on. It is an historical event after all. Apparently I watched the late Queen’s coronation from a crib, age 2 months , at my grandparents. I still have the coronation mug in perfect condition. It’s worth about £11.

Wyllow3 Sat 08-Apr-23 18:48:59

I'll watch the highlights - its historical value and curiosity - (and the frocks) and have an ordinary day.

Nothing here happened at past royal events but if there are a "do" in the street I'd pop out -why be unsociable. Chance to have natters with rarely seen neighbours.

#notmyking is more than just one person's opinion.

The OP was quite clear with the thread title - so we could all see what the likely content would be.

I think she was genuinely asking what people of a Not My King persuasion would be doing on the day.

But vq did ask what people would be doing on the day of the Coronation and did ask.
Will you watch it for the historical value? Will you hide from every TV? Are you planning a day out?

One would assume she said Not my King referring to herself, not necessarily all of us.

I'll do whatever I can to avoid watching it, not that I bear them any ill will, just because I have no interest in them.
