Unknown origin, but one of my much-loved, late Grandma's sayings, which I've never forgotten. "If the Devil always looked like the Devil, there'd be no such thing as temptation. "

My favourite is by Dorothy Parker and I use it quite often to turn down an alcoholic drink which I don't want, without offending the person who's offering the drink:

"I'm really not much of a drinker
Just one or two at the most.
Three, I'm under the table
Four, I'm under the host"

Always raises a laugh.

Juno56 The Duke of Wellington had a similar saying 'I made my campaigns using rope, and if a piece broke I tied a knot.'

(compared with Napoleon who 'built his campaigns of iron and when one piece broke the whole structure collapsed.'
