Nailbrushes - a thing of the past?

It occurs to me that no families of the younger generation appear to have nailbrushes. Am I alone in owning one, even though it's not in daily use?

I have two upstairs and downstairs but now its been mentioned I haven't spotted one at DS and family.

A very necessary item here! One in both bathrooms, and by the kitchen sink, plus I have a small one that stays in the sponge bag I take away with me.

Three sinks all them on the side and I have a tiny travel one.

We have one in the kitchen/bathroom and down stairs loo.
The one in the bathroom is a fishmongers one,it has really hard bristles and does the job faster then the softer ones.

I have always had wooden ones, utility room and bathrooms.
Used almost daily when I have been gardening or painting at some point during the day. After use, it’s a swish in clean soapy water. Something I have been doing for over 50 years and it hasn’t killed me yet!

I have always used nail brushes, one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom.

I recall the school nurse checking our finger nails after searching for nits in our hair, any bitten or dirty nails were commented on! Later during my nursing career nail brushes were considered to be a source of infection and were banned.

I do gardening, DIY and the cooking so I have nail brushes in the kitchen, the utility room, the toilet, the bathroom and the en suite. I change them frequently.
I have never thought about putting them in the dishwasher.
I always scrub vigorously after cutting up chicken! I also use antibac hand wash.

i buy my nail brushes in packs of 3 from poundshops usually online, i have to use a lot of creams/lotions and some are greasy for my psoriasis, i always use rubber gloves for the dishes so my hands are rarely wet except washing in the loo, i keep one next to laptop that i cover with a wetwipe and wipe over the keyboard, i have problems with my hands, so covering one with a wetwipe gets into places that hurt my fingers.

I stayed with my daughter and family recently, and my grandson aged 5, proudly showed me his nailbrush and demonstrated how to use it.

When I started my nursing training back in the 80s, nailbrushes were present at every sink. However they soon disappeared and several years later were removed altogether unless single use only, as it was discovered how they harbour germs and bacteria.
Maybe that’s why they are so hard to find now.

We have nailbrushes at all of our sinks, and they are used all the time.

One at the allotment and one in each bathroom.

I often have my hands in soil, so a nailbrush an absolute must!

Maybe if you're retired or in a posh job but my husband's a mechanic and uses one everyday .

I have always used a nail brush, essential if you want clean nails, especially if the nails are long like mine (I do love a good manicure even if mostly DIY!). and when the brush gets a little tatty I replace it and use the old one for scrubbing small areas of clothing like collars and cuffs which can get rather dirty and which machine washing doesn’t seem to clean properly. Great for trainers too. In fact just this morning I attacked a messy tracksuit belonging to my three year old granddaughter-items like these are often handed to me to rid them of stains ( my adult children's clothes also) They call it ‘Nana’s magic touch’! No magic at all just a bit of care and attention! So nail brushes are a necessary and multi use item for me.

It’s good hygiene to use a nail brush !

Nanadude Wed 12-Apr-23 13:39:31

I bought my g'children nailbrushes (found on Amazon) when I got tired of seeing their grubby little hands, and knowing what lurks beneath those fingernails. I do believe children should be exposed to bacteria, etc and that playing in the dirt is good for them . I just thought the dirt should occasionally be diluted.
They used them for a while until the novelty wore off.

Likewise after gardening they’re essential, & no I don’t remember seeing any in AC’s homes. Mine go in the dishwasher for cleaning

BStP Wed 12-Apr-23 13:44:02

I have one I use most days especially after gardening but younger generation don't seem to have them or get their hands as mucky as mine in the soil

CV2020 Wed 12-Apr-23 14:04:14

I’ve got one in kitchen and one in each bathroom. I also have one in toilet bag for travelling. Can’t abide dirty nails!

When lockdown landed on us in March 2020 I remember a degree of panic hitting us when we realised that Waitrose (which was home delivering to us) didn't sell nailbrushes. For some reason it seemed to be an urgent need at the time and we were at a loss as to how to source one. We have laughed about it since, particularly as neither of us is much of a nailbrush user, apart from DH occasionally after gardening.

I have one on the bathroom sink all the time and use it on my nails every time I wash my hands, I use it with soap and rinse thoroughly so it stays clean. I always have a brand new one on standby as well grin

How else do you clean your nails after gardening?
I needed a new nailbrush and for various reasons could not go into the local shops at the time. Happened to mention it casually when talking to daughter on phone ( She lives 200 miles away).
After a few days a package plopped through the letter box fom Amazon - not one, but two tiny brushes popped out. One blue and one pink, each about 5cm long and 2cm wide, obviously intended for dolls. I thanked my daughter - for the thought!! They went with the next donations to the charity shop!
