mini skirts and pvc raincoats, I do feel nostalgic when I think of Mary Quant. She was the one who released us from following the fashion from our mum`s day. We owe her a big debt, she showed us how to release those restraining fashion ropes and we did

This talk of Mary Quant has bought so many memories back. I had a copy of one of her dresses. It was a black and white mini dress. I wore it with black boots and felt I looked great. I have definitely never felt that stylish since!
Thank you Mary for your major contribution to the styles of the 60's R.I.P.

I was Sandy Shaw, Fanny or Nana Mouscouri if I had my glasses on. Iwas at art school in the 60s. What more could you want .

Quant, Biba and Bus Stop, Kensington High St.. I remember them well.. great designers.. we were lucky

Weren’t we lucky, I particularly loved the mini skirt. I had no shame, the shorter the better. My MiL called then ‘postage stamps’. Once when staying with them shortly after we were married she walked into the sitting room holding up my skirt and asking ‘who does this belonged to’. She wanted to know if it belonged to me or her 4 year old granddaughter. 😀

I was Terence Conran's PA in the 60s so in the thick of it. Habitat and Biba. Those were the days!

Saw her wonderful exhibition at the V&A a few years ago. Sublime.
I started as a Saturday Girl in Boots in 1979 and remember the Mary Quant make up sold. Wish I'd bought it.

I agree kitty. A fabulous time to be alive, especially to be a teenager. I was fortunate enough to be a good shape for the 60s - tall and slim. I couldn't afford Mary Quant clothes but had many copies. I remember I had a pair of shoes that were black one side and white the other.

Ah, so sad. Brought back some wonderful memories. My dad used to ask me what else would I be wearing with the belt I had on! 😄 White knee high boots and mini skirts. Happy days. RIP Mary. 🌹

How sad such an iconic figure. Like everyone else didn’t realise she was so much older than me. Also remember the lipstick with silver case and daisy her trademark. RIP lovely lady 🌹

I'm surprised at how sad I felt at the news that she has died. She was the icon of my teenage years and I had the make up, bought on Kensington High Street.

I hadn’t realized she was in her 90’s. Definitely a big influence in the ‘60’s. Her name was the answer to a recent question on a TV quiz programme. None of the contestants had heard of her, although one offered up Laura Ashley.

Me too, the article I read said that she opened "Bazaar" in 1955 but I wasn't aware of her until the mid-sixties.

And the make-up was wonderful, I still remember a soft prune coloured eyeshaddow stick. It's a colour I buy today if I ever see it.

Yes, I remember Bus Stop, Kensington Church Street. People hardly ever mention it but I bought more from them than the others.

I saw Mary Quant in London, in the early 2000s. She was coming out of the Vidal Sassoon salon in Sloane Square. Same hairstyle as ever, but copper coloured. She was instantly recognisable.

daughterofbonniebelle Fri 14-Apr-23 13:33:14

I liked the look of her styles, but I found them anything but liberating: I found them quite oppressive as I didn’t have the legs for miniskirts. It heralded in the era of elevating skinniness.

I was also sad to hear the news about Mary Quant.

What I found amazing was how little fashion has changed through the years. Mini skirts and dresses are still popular and hairstyles aren't very different.

RIP Mary, the 60's were a wonderful time to be alive, we were so lucky. My only regret was that my hair was too wavy for the blunt cut bob. Feeling really nostalgic now!

MrsKen33 Fri 14-Apr-23 16:00:48

Nightsky2. Did you ever go to the Slade Ball. I did !!!!

JudyBloom Fri 14-Apr-23 16:32:54

I recommend Mary Quant's Autobiography, named 'Quant by Quant' it is a fabulous read. I loved her designs especially the Mini skirt which I proudly adopted in my youth at the time.
R.I.P. Mary.

Esme Young, of the Sewing Bee, gave a wonderful talk about Mary Quant some time ago. It wasn't just the innovative designs, but the cut of the clothes and the materials she used. No viscose in sight! I managed to buy a pair of fine woollen knee length shorts, from her Ginger Group collection. They were finished off with wide bands of purple and black round each leg. They were incredibly unusual for the time. I wish I had a photo, but I don't. I wish I'd kept them; they'd be worth a fortune now.
