I was chatting with a couple of ladies yesterday who go around social groups and care homes doing laughter yoga? Has anyone ever experienced this and, if so, what did you think of it?

I saw it on tv , it was in Germany; oh how they laughed, but they seemed to enjoy it. Why not try it and let us know.

An old work colleague teaches it and everyone seems to enjoy themselves. I think it is definitely worth giving it a try. We could all do with more laughter in our lives.

I haven’t but I’d love to try it (more laughter but not so much yoga).

We have had Laughter Therapists at some of the Memory cafes which I help at. They have been really good.

Never heard of it so I googled it and watched some videos and it certainly made me smile. Apparently the body can't tell the difference between faked laughter and real laughter so it has the same physiological benefit for the body.

Sadly it's apparently contra-indicated for some of the people who probably need some cheering up - people with hernias, back problems, high blood pressure, heart problems, amongst others. And I suspect anyone who is very incontinent may want to practice it at home in private 😉

I tried it many years ago and felt very uncomfortable, it felt fake and contrived..

I can't imagine anything worse, to be honest!

I agree - it sounds awful!

I did it when we lived in Holland as part of general yoga and found it wonderfully therapeutic.

Yes - it was fun! Done it a couple of times. One over Zoom during lockdown and the other in person recently.

initially it seemed a bit embarrassing but quickly genuine laughter takes over, which brings on feelings of happiness, endorphins etc, ....not that I have done it myself but that’s how it looksed on the programme I mentioned earlier.
Think we could all do cheering up.

I think the best thing is to make ordinary yoga fun, not some specific "type".

You can do very gentle or chair yoga btw, that doesn't place too many demands on the body. U tube is full of them.

I agree.where I live I go to a gentle restorative Yoga class with gongs.. that leaves me with a genuine feeling of well being and we all come out smiling..

It was suggested that we invite someone who does this to come and do it with our seniors club , it was voted down by the entire attendance. ! Too far out of our comfort zone , or are we just too strait laced ,!

No but if I actually tried yoga I'd probably crease up and then injure myself, so it's not a good idea!
DBF (darling best friend) & I actually discussed this earlier in the week!

I have done a couple of sessions years ago and it really made me laugh uncontrollably .It may have been our male instructor who seemed so ridiculous when doing it but it certainly got our whole class laughing.

Chair yoga newbies - or sceptics - have a look through this video. Tow ladies, one doing an even gentler version.

(teasing) you and friend give it a try, Ali08

🤣🤣 We have difficulty enough just getting up off the sofa! x

Millie22 Tue 18-Apr-23 11:14:42

No thanks ... normal yoga is bad enough.

Coco51 Tue 18-Apr-23 11:17:43

Sounds a bit funny to me 🤪😂

Nannan2 Tue 18-Apr-23 11:27:43

I dont think i could actually force myself to laugh- however i think NORMAL yoga in a roomful of older folk might bring out actual real laughter as you got into the yoga session..😂😅
