Cold callers at the door

It needs to say no uninvited sales callers. Years ago I remember a sign that said we do not trade at the door.

I do own my own house but I find it easier when cold callers appear that I rent this property, and do it through an estate agent so know zilch about the landlord. This works well for double glazing etc but it would not have worked for grannyactivist.

I think this was a scam, BT/EE are two different companies they do not cold call!

I hope your back door was closed and locked while this persistent and ignorant fellow was arguing with you at the front. Thieves work in pairs - one keeps you talking while the other reconnoitres for ways into the house.

I’m always baffled by people who end up in unwanted conversations on their own doorstep. I just say ‘I’m not interested, thank you’ and close the door.

My husband is annoyingly unable to do this, because he thinks it’s rude. I genuinely don’t understand why that‘s a) true, and b) a problem, if so.

If I do answer the door (not a given), and find it's a cold caller, I just say I have a pan on the boil, but no thanks to whatever it is. If I don't like the look of them I sometimes say 'I'll have to shut the door now, to keep the dog in'. He died a while ago now, but callers don't know that.

Sounds very intimidating. But I’m sure it was a scam, you did well to keep him out of your house. We get callers…nicknamed the Nottingham Knockers….wave a lanyard and say they are on a rehab scheme from the forces or prison and try to sell you very overpriced cheap cleaning materials……the sort you pick up in bargain stores for 99p….for £10+! Some become very rude and aggressive if you say no! Caught once….never again!

I have a quite aggressive sign on my door which mentions sales people, charity collecters, religious and politicals and anyone without an appointment. Yet I still get people knocking. Its like they think they have extra rights and the sign does not refer to them!

Many years ago I used to do sales and cold calling. I was quite good at it. However when I saw one of these signs I always avoided that house because I knew I was not going to make a sale there.

I have a ring type door bell (see my posting on another thread) and I use it to communicate - or not if I dont like the look of them. Often I just decide to let them walk off and try another house. Many people think the camera only works if they press the bell. So they just knock at the door. Mine records everyone who walks past. However it doesnt store the pictures online permanently unless I instruct it to.

There are numbers there to call to report your displeasure over what happened.

We don't answer our front door, unless we know who is knocking.

I don’t answer the door if I’m not expecting a caller. I’m short and wobbly and vulnerable, I cannot get to the door fast enough anyway. People who know me wait. People who don’t know me think nobody is there and go away.

If Mr. B is in and hears the doorbell he happily says ‘not interested’ and shuts the door. He’s much bigger than me

Our local MP handed out neat bold printed signs saying, ‘Knocking at this property is illegal’ and no one’s knocked since( except friends). I don’t care whether or not it is illegal - it works. I don’t answer unsolicited phone calls, either, unless they leave a message ! They learn, eventually.

I’m the same Siope It’s not that difficult to say “no thanks” and then shut the door. No other conversation/excuse is necessary is it?

Thankfully we haven’t had any for a few years now.

I have a laminated notice on our door that says:

This household charges £10 per minute to listen to sales pitches, charity pleas and religious messages.

This charge is payable in advance.

By knocking on the door you signal your agreement to the conditions above.

For the most part, it works!!

I have a sign at my front door that clearly states No Cold Callers! You cannot miss it . Few try there luck I just point to the notice and close the door

We also have a sign on the lamp post outside our house this is a no cold calling zone

I just answer the door and if not interested I say, no thank you.

I feel sorry for people who, to make a living, have to trawl round houses, on cold and wet days, trying to make a sale. Can’t imagine they are paid much, or do it out of choice.

I am polite but explain that I don’t buy at the door, and rarely have grief. It’s tricky of course if they are aggressive, or scamming, and make householders feel threatened. I haven’t been in that position………yet!

We caught some gypsy looking character at our front door once trying to peel off our ‘no cold callers’ sticker. He was soon sent packing.

I just say that we neither buy or sell at the door. Living in a rural area, we have very few uninvited callers.

Having a glass front door and a very large German shepherd who is clearly visible through it, I have no cold callers. Even the Jehovahs Witnesses, always recognisable, beat a hasty retreat and haven’t returned.
