I’ve never known such a cold April! 🥶

A couple of hours ago the temp. on the thermometer outside our kitchen window read 7.8 deg. And dh said just now that it’s still only 8. And we’re in outer SW London.

Also, our flowering cherry usually takes about a week from the time the buds begin to open, to full flowering.
This year it’s taken 3 weeks.

I looked at the forecast and am ready to hang washing out, it has/is oh so wet in somerset, I mean everywhere is sodden. This morning I see that the house wall bottoms are splashed and there are drips everywhere. The sky overgead is now covered in a huge grey cloud with black in the distance. The forecast has to be right, to clear by 11

I feel partially optimistic and have just removds two layers from my bed covering but am leaving my electric blanket. That linen bedding of mine, it is just languishing in my airing cupboard. Yes I know, don`t cast a clout till may is out, end of may but always, I have changed my bedding to cooler by now

Got to be honest, I would much rather this than the searing heat of last summer

Karmalady - here in the north west, we didn’t have searing heat (sadly). Our reservoirs are over flowing , it feels as though it’s rained since Christmas. Whoops there I go, grumbling when I said I’d stop.

The electric blanket and heated throw (my best friends) - how did I ever manage without them?

I have to say, we’ve certainly had some days when the sun was warm enough to sit in - only as long as there was absolutely no wind - but there hasn’t been even one day when the air has not felt cold. Or very cold.

Having said that, the temp outside our kitchen window as I write (at 20 past 8) is 12.1 - and that’s with no sun - there’s thick white cloud and a fair breeze, so very possibly things are looking up. 🤞

To sit in, or out? lol.

We have sat a few times on the swing bench in a corner of the garden in the sun- bliss. But yes, we are at least 2-3 weeks behind with the trees and flowers.

It’s the wind that makes it feel so cold too, even when it says 16°. Sitting in the sun in the sheltered garden, sometimes I don’t even need a sweater.
Step outside to walk the dog and I’m there with an extra layer and my coat zipped up.

Spain recorded its hottest ever temperature for April on Thursday, hitting 38.8C according to the country's meteorological service.

Phew! 🥵 It certainly wasn't that hot on my walk in the country park this morning. There was a thick mist and the wind was freezing.

It looks to warm up a bit next week.

M0nica Fri 28-Apr-23 19:30:48

It was meant to warm up from yesterday, but didn't.

Sun and 16 - quite nice really. Lovely flowers.

At last, warmth, and sunshine, the big doors in the kitchen are open wide and I am spending most of the day in the garden. Throughly weeded and sorted the front garden this morning and I am just off to cut the grass.

Louella12 Sat 29-Apr-23 16:48:30

Warm weather has arrived. Wonderful. Sitting in the garden.

Callistemon21 Sat 29-Apr-23 16:52:36

I weeded some of the patio.
How did a holly tree manage to embed itself between slabs?

Heavy fog here first thing (Wiltshire), brightened up nicely and was really warm by early afternoon. Now clouding over.
Did a lot of gardening so I’m happy!

I've had the log burner on again this evening. It's been cloudy with showers all day. I'm hoping for warmer weather tomorrow as I've used the last of our logs. DH and I decided not to buy any more, but we've had a wobble and might buy another half load.
I'm fed up of the cold wind and dull, cloudy days.

Callistemon21 Sat 29-Apr-23 22:06:10

It's been like a lovely summer's day here.

HowVeryDareYou2 Sat 29-Apr-23 22:09:29

It was warm and sunny here until about 6pm (Nottingham) but then hammered with rain for 1/2 and hour

Yesterday beautiful 18° and sunny here in London. That temperature would suit me all the time. I absolutely dread the summers we've had for about the last 4 years where it has hit over 30° at times. Last year it was 40° one day and we bought an air conditioning unit in case it happens again as I just can't stand it. Whenever it is cold I remind myself better than being too hot.

Jaxjacky Sun 30-Apr-23 08:36:21

17 here yesterday, pleasant, it got chilly after 6. You can tell it’s warmer, two wasps and a fly in the house!

Iam64 Sun 30-Apr-23 15:27:40

Grim grey rainy day again here in north manchester

Norah Sun 30-Apr-23 16:36:39

We have the fires on - again!

Its official last month was the coldest for six years and temperatures were, on average, 1.6C below average.

The RHS was warning gardeners not to plant out seeds and plants for another few weeks, which has me puzzled, because I went to B&Q yesterday and all their plants were marked down and a lot of bedding plants seemed on their last legs, and the gardening section was very last dregs of the summer plantings at a time when, in this cold year, in particular, I would say the planting season was only just starting.

We have had a glimpse of the sun for the last hour, peeking out from increasingly cloudy skies over chilly N Cheshire. Now the very dark clouds are winning, piling in from the west, and it is going to rain, again. It’s May now so I am trying to resist firing up the heating. I am still in winter layers, a scarf wrapped around my chilly neck. Brrr.

Iam64 Mon 01-May-23 20:01:13

This morning started grey and drizzley. By 3pm the sun was here. I spent two hours starting the garden tidy. Tonight I haven’t lit the lit burner - yippeee
