Does it hit the sweet spot. Are you over or under? Does it matter to what you want to do in the future? I am restricting my alcohol intake. The person I would like to be goes running at dawn. The person I am chills out and carries a glass of wine round my garden in the evening. Where do you fit in?

It seems I am definitely in the minority as I struggle to keep to below the recommended 14 units.

I’m in the minority too than Fran. I love a glass of wine. I’m probably between 14 and 20 units a week. Shock, horror, I hear people cry😱 However, I recently read a report about a large scale, reputable study done on thousands of people, that showed drinking a third of a bottle of wine per day has no detrimental impact on health. A third of a bottle of white wine per day equates to approx 21 units per week. There!

Usually under, but occasionally over. Each to their own 😉

A glass of wine now and then suits me. I do not like it when other people drink too much and become loud and abusive. Some people can take drink well others not so well.

So you drink wine then!😀

14 units is around 6 medium (174ml( glasses of wine or 6 pints of 4% beer. DH and I definitely drink more than that. We used to drink every evening but have no committed to have three booze-free days per week. We're off to our local for our usual Friday night gang meet-up and I'll have 3 large white wines for sure. We're meeting old friends for lunch tomorrow so I'll be over 14 units for sure. My parents were daily drinkers and lived to 93 and 95. Dad enjoyed a drink right up to the end.

I started drinking more after my husband died three years ago.Sat on my own every night watching TV a G and T every night seemed a good idea.I still have a double G and T every night which equates to 14 units. My Diabetic nurse is happy and so am I. However every six weeks or so I go completely alcohol free for one week to prove that I am not addicted to alcohol.
Every birthday and Christmas I ask my family to buy me gin as there is nothing else I need.

I have no idea how many units a week I drink and feel as GrannyGravy does that life's too short to count them.

Lizzie44 Fri 28-Apr-23 13:05:05

Never been able to drink much. Anything over two glasses of wine and I feel ill. I don't drink spirits apart from a medicinal whisky when I have a cold. DH not much of a drinker either. My treat is a mini bottle of cava a couple of times a month. I'm sure no one believes me when I fill in forms asking about number of units I drink in a week. I'm amazed at how much DDs drink...

We have a beer and a glass of wine most nights. Have a lot more if we meet up with friends or family. We enjoy it.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 28-Apr-23 12:53:32

Life is far too short to count units of alcohol, I enjoy white wine, a good blush, champagne and vodka with either fresh orange juice or tonic.

Not all at the same time I hasten to add 🤣🍾🍸🍹

Me too FranA, really struggle to keep it under 21 at weekends only. Bit of a hedonist though smile

Davida1968 Fri 28-Apr-23 12:33:22

I don't think that people who drink more than 14 units are (generally speaking, based on looking at responses here) going to be contributing to this post...

Statistics say that the over 50s drink the most-more than those younger. I guess that might be true as the health risks were less well known when that generation was younger and habits became ingrained. I know that very many of those similar in age to myself (66) drink more than the limit. A bottle of wine each night isn’t unusual and certainly those I meet socially have few concerns about how much they drink. I don’t drink at all and haven’t for some years due to health problems. I have lost all desire to now! However much we are told being teetotal is acceptable though, I can feel very left out as drinking is the expected norm amongst those I know, plus the more relaxed behaviour it encourages, with which I find it difficult to join in. I comfort myself with the fact that my Dad was teetotal all his life by choice but still managed to be the life and soul of the party. I really don’t know how he did it!

I think I'd get on better with the person you are than the person you'd like to be, Fran! Interesting that most of the responses are from those who don't drink or limit it? 😇

Interesting that some seem to get awfully defensive about their own and others' alcohol intake...

I was creeping towards 14, so I’ve cut out wine, now one or two cans of shandy an evening 0.3 units each can.

1 double rum and calorie free coke while waiting for dinner to cook, sometimes another one after that but that is it. I like wine but it gives me a headache so I only have it now if I go out for lunch with a friend or stay after a meeting at the local pub and have a glass of wine. Not even once a month for the wine though. However the rum is generally one double a day or two perhaps 3 times a week. so I guess I am probably having about 22 units a week.

Other than a glass of something fizzy on high days and holidays I rarely drink anything now, not because I think it's bad for me but because it makes me feel grotty the next day.
The drinkers amongst you are very lucky to escape this!

March1 Fri 28-Apr-23 11:53:42

I probably used to have a couple of bottles of wine a week. Three and a half years ago I did '30 days alcohol free'. It had support and chat and incentives online. Never drank alcohol again.

GANNET Fri 28-Apr-23 11:51:51

I never drank at all and at 45 my Dr suggested a glass of red wine a night would do me good. My mum was teetotal and died youngish at 72 my father was a moderate drinker and lived into his late 80s…

Maybe the woman in the supermarket was stocking up for visitors. Maybe she has a drink problem. If so, she has my sympathy.
