Betjeman was very unkind about Slough in his poem of the same name, which I remember studying at school. We were told that he was just using Slough as representative of any area he considered blighted by industrialisation (and probably because he could easily rhyme it with "It isn't fit for humans now"
). He regretted it later and apologised for the damage his poem did to the town's reputation. It seems to have stood the test of time though, which must be so annoying for anyone living there.
