A country you would love to visit/ would have loved to visit

I would have loved to visit Canada and Alaska but it is such a long way for us I can’t stand the thought of the long journey now. I would have liked to see bears and wolves in their natural habitat but I guess I will have to cope with koalas and dingos ( not that you see many of those these days, either). We are about to go on a trip up to the Kimberleys which is thousands of kms away and that is just within Australia. Sometimes I wish they could shift the whole continent, we are so far from places!

Like you - Alaska.
I’d also love to go to Iceland.
In fact I think I’d love to live in either of those places. Somewhere nice and cold! 🥶

FannyCornforth Fri 05-May-23 05:41:26

Out of interest nanna8, how cold does it get in Australia?
My aunty has an Ozzie pen pal who she has been friends with for 60 odd years; her little gd asked my aunty to send her some snow in the post!

Japan, in cherry blossom time.

If it's somewhere I haven't been yet, I would pick New Zealand, as it has such a varied landscape, and seems so scenic. However, as long haul is out of the question for us these days because of health issues, we'll happily make do visiting the many places we've yet to see in our beautiful British Isles.

Where we are, in the south, it can get down to 1 or 2 C in winter but that is unusual. It is usually between 12 and 43C. Very hot very briefly in Summer and vice versa. We don’t get snow here and frosts are unusual. The mountains get snow and a lot of people ski in the Australian Alps every year. You can find snow in Winter about 70 k from here, up the top of the mountain. Tasmania is a lot colder, they are nearer the Antarctic, further south.

Thanks nanna8, very informative smile

When I visited Sydney (my late husband’s home city) in July, August and September, I found it very chilly at night. No central heating!

I’d like to have seen more of Germany. I’ve only been once, to sing in a concert in Saarbrücken, so I have never seen Ludwig’s castles, Berlin or Hamelin. I don’t travel now, so I will never see them.

I think India would be very interesting.

I would love to have been to Austria, to visit Salzburg and Vienna and to see the Alps up close. I'm unlikely to do that now

annodomini Fri 05-May-23 08:12:25

GMB, you'd love those cities. Salzburg reminds me, oddly enough. of Edinburgh, with its castle high above the city. The second time I was there, I was thrilled to visit Mozart's house.
I would love to visit Canada and take the train journey through the Rockies. This wish has been strengthened by the current 'Race Across the World' - spectacular scenery and friendly, helpful people. Then I would take a cruise from Vancouver to the coast of Alaska, which I have frequently 'visited' in the books of Dana Stabenow.

My desire to visit Canada, Vietnam and Cambodia disappeared when my travelling companion died. I’ve loved travelling with him but feel I want familiarity now.
I love Greece and have a solo trip planned

I feel very privileged to have visited most of the places mentioned here. My current hope is to manage some river ctuises. I certainly haven't seen as much of Germany as I would like.

nanna8 Fri 05-May-23 09:16:07

The European river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam was one of the very best cruises we have ever been on. Also the Mekong trip from Vietnam to Cambodia was good , very different. We have been to most of the Asian and Pacific countries because they are relatively close for us and a lot cheaper than holidays within Australia. I have never been to Africa or India but not likely to now. Also not to the USA but I’m not really keen on going there.

The place I would love to visit would be the Galapagos Islands to see the giant tortoises and other reptiles. Ive always had a bit of a mania for tortoises and kept them when I lived with my parents. Although I could afford the trip the flight would be too long for me. Also the terrain is very rough and I am no longer mobile enough to walk far.

Another place I would have loved to visit was the Yemen. Alas it was never safe enough with Western visitors being in danger of kidnap and a civil war.

Ive been independently to some unusual places which it is difficult to visit now such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Syria. My travelling days are over.

Not really one country, but Central
Asia (maybe 3 of the ‘stans) is on the list for soon.

Chardy Fri 05-May-23 09:25:29

NZ and Ireland are both beautiful and have such lovely, welcoming people.

glammanana Fri 05-May-23 09:26:26

pascal30 Fri 05-May-23 09:28:59

I'd love to have visited Oaxaca, Mexico to see the crafts, Also Nepal and Bhutan.. but my flying days are over, So it will be Europe by train for.me

JackyB Fri 05-May-23 09:32:02

I've been to lots of places, mainly in Europe. I am happy to stay at home and read about other places, or talk to people who have been there. No dirt, sweat, heat, flies or diarrhoea, not to mention the long haul flight to get there. (I don't mind the flying and love being able to watch 3 films back to back, but the whole procedure gives me a headache, what with the jet lag, air pressure in the cabin, continual noise and having to sit for so long)

Having said that, there's lots of corners of Germany I still haven't seen, and I'd like to go back to the UK and visit more places there in the next couple of years. Might be able to persuade DH as there have been several new archaeological discoveries recently.

henetha Fri 05-May-23 09:40:03

India for me. I've always been fascinated by it's people and places, and how colourful the clothes are
and even the beautiful jewellery.
Too late now though for me to visit.

I’ve always wanted to go to Israel but whenever I’ve thought I could manage it there had been unrest and I’ve not taken the risk. I don’t think I’ll probably get there now as family dolt particularly want to go and I wouldn’t go on my own.

I went to Australia and NZ on an organised tour with Titan in 2007, loved Australia not quite so much NZ, would really recommend Titan for long haul. With my spine problems I don’t think I could fly that far now.

Nearer to home I’ve not managed to get to Italy or Poland despite seeing quite a lot of other European countries . Would definitely still like to get to go to both of them . Also we are hoping to go back to America next year and take the grandchildren as well for the first time. The grownups have all been before and we’d like to all go as a family

I lived in Darwin, northern Australia, for over two years, and it was hot all the year round, being in the tropics; temperature rarely dropped below 30° during the day. Hot and wet November-March, hot and dry April-October.

I would love to go to India, fascinated by the country's history and have read loads about it -might get there one day, but the visa seems such a faff.

nadateturbe Fri 05-May-23 12:43:37

South Anerica, the HolyLand. Lots.. But I hate flying. So never went further than Croatia.

nanna8 Fri 05-May-23 13:21:45

Lovely people up in Darwin, so friendly. Nothing but good memories of our hols up there.

Millie22 Fri 05-May-23 13:33:23
