I would have to say Keeping Up Appearances especially when Hyacinth's behaviour becomes extreme and her face starts to twitch and how the other characters react towards her.

Only Fools and Horses
and a Scottish comedy called Still Game that many on here may not have seen .

Oh, I loove Still Game! I have started watching back series on Iplayer. It is gentle observational humour with well drawn characters. I saw pubs like The Clansman when visiting family in Paisley. grin

My latest would be Colin From Accounts. Binged on it, now waiting for the follow up please!

I tend to like fly on the wall situation comedies where not a lot happens, This Country would be such an example, Daisy May and Charlie Cooper took talking absolute drivel, to a whole new level, just reminded me of the mid teen years, having not reached the proper going out stage, just hanging! waiting for something to happen, even if in real life The Coopers were well past that stage when they filmed it. I thought the late Caroline Aherne's writing was wonderfully well observed in The Royle Family, who'd have thought a situation comedy could be strung out around a family slumped in front of the tv bickering. Mum is another where not a lot happens great acting, bitter/sweet like that one a lot. I like Sharon Horgan's writing she is also very good, particularly Catastrophe, albeit rather rude in parts.

Ruth Jones in Stella, and parts of Gavin and Stacey.

When my children were at home they got me into a few things such as Ricky Gervais's The Office, The League of Gentlemen , The Inbetweeners, The Mighty Boosh, all a bit Marmite, I imagine, but I found them funny in a weirdly, puerile sort of way, don't know what that says about me hmm . One of my closest friends, we share the same sense of humour keeps telling me to watch Friday Night Dinner, from a little while ago, I keep meaning to but haven't yet.

I suppose the one that has transcended time imo would be Fawlty Towers, it was really quite brilliant. Oh and Father Ted, also another classic. .

More recent sitcoms:

Friday night dinner
Still game
Motherland

Still love the golden oldies:
Fawlty Towers
Steptoe and Son
Only fools and horses

There are very few that I don’t like.

I think we do sit-coms so well.

Maggiemaybe Wed 10-May-23 18:44:16

Two more oldies that I’d forgotten were Early Doors and Scarborough. Both with that small town vibe and the characters were so well observed. I was disappointed that the first only got 2 series, and Scarborough only the one.

My family love Ghosts, but I haven’t watched it.

I absolutely love Motherland, and This Country was also great.
I don't know what it is, but I just can't get into Colin From Accounts at all.

Maggiemaybe Wed 10-May-23 18:53:15

Colin From Accounts has had a few mentions, but isn’t it Australian?

TerriBull Wed 10-May-23 19:08:31

I like Motherland, I don't always find it that funny, but I find it very watchable.

I'd say Colin From Accounts is very niche, you either like it or you don't, I've heard the same about This Country, comments along the lines of "just don't get the humour at all" I guess it's like everything in life, humour is subjective. . Personally, I wouldn't want to sit through an episode of Dad's Army and I probably shouldn't even say this it's positively tantamount to treason, so I'll whisper it I never found Morcambe and Wise even slightly funny

TerriBull Wed 10-May-23 19:11:01

Yes Maggiemaybe Colin is Australian, my Australian friend tells me, for those who watched it, the couple in it are a couple in real life.

How could I forget Ghostsconfused. Next series will be the last. It’s a little gem.

Does it matter that Colin from Accounts is Australian? It's really funny.

I haven’t seen it, but I’ve heard that it’s good.

I love The Detectorists. It is so well written and acted, that you really care about the characters.

Dickens Wed 10-May-23 20:49:11

Vicar of Dibley
As Time Goes By

... and more recently, "Mum"

For the manic humour of John Cleese - Fawlty Towers, which, I might add, was a huge favourite among my Norwegian work colleagues when I worked there. They would actually quote stock phrases from the series.

Another very popular British series in Norway - Midsomer Murders.

If I was only able to take one recording onto a desert island, it would be Vicar of Dibley. Apart from the humour - yes, I know it's parochial - there's something comforting about sitting down to watch an episode of it. It reflects a way of village-life which is fast disappearing but was a backdrop to my childhood, so makes me feel that long lost sense of security. Which of course is all an illusion.

Me too, although I must admit I never really thought of it as a sitcom.
