I would have to say Keeping Up Appearances especially when Hyacinth's behaviour becomes extreme and her face starts to twitch and how the other characters react towards her.

Two Doors Down
The Vicar of Dibley

I have always liked Fawlty Towers but, on seeing a recent programme about it, I appreciate that Basil Fawlty's behaviour was generally quite racist, sexist, ageist, etc. However, the viewer is meant to see him as an ignorant and ridiculous person so this behaviour is not condoned but laughed at. I still think it's funny.

I do quite like Only Fools and Horses, though, again, I think there are some stereotypical ideas underlying some of the humour (eg naming the block of flats Nelson Mandela Towers (or whatever it is), could be interpreted as making fun of what people call "politically correct" ideas.

I liked Alma's Not Normal. Reading about some of the subject matter, which, in itself, is not very funny, I did not think I would like it, but it turned out to be very humane, and funny, I thought.

I liked Kate and Koji (with Brenda Blethyn). I know it was a bit corny and staged but I still thought it was funny. But it has been binned so obviously other people thought differently.

Some of the sitcoms mentioned here, I thought I liked but, having seen some of them more recently (eg Just Good Friends), I don't think they have weathered very well.

I think Motherland is great.

Dinner Ladies….. I adored everything Victoria Wood did … but with Dinner Ladies she ‘nailed’ people!

Many sitcoms that I used to find funny years ago, I can't laugh at now, apart from allo allo, makes me laugh out loud, love the policeman with his pigeon English. Also love Motherland, but have to watch in secret as hubby does not approve

Ever Decreasing Circles: Briers maddening husband character, Peter Egan's urbane neighbour and the long-suffering Penelope Wilton! Classic comedy the like of which we don't get these days.

I loved Motherland too but language could get a bit fruity! Poor harassed Julia was wonderful.

And Harold and Hilda

Bazza Fri 12-May-23 17:30:53

So many brilliant ones mentioned. Such a shame there aren’t many new ones being made. We also enjoyed Colin from Accounts, even if it was Australian! Good to have something with no violence or police related. Must also mention Last Tango in Halifax. Loved that.

Daddima Fri 12-May-23 17:59:05

Quite a lot really, especially..

Yes Minister
Royle Family,
Still Game
Derry Girls
Scot Squad ( Chief Cameron Miekelson is wonderful)

I’ve recently loved Early Doors and Mum ( though Peter Mullan’s character annoys me!)

I could never laugh at Mr Bean or Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, and always found Harold Steptoe such a sad figure ( I know they’re not real!)

And, an honourable mention for Ireland and Father Ted.

Friday Night Dinner and Two Doors Down both really make me laugh. Ghosts is brilliant too but I'm not sure it counts as a sitcom though.

Kathmaggie Fri 12-May-23 21:11:31

Early doors and Fresh Fields for me
