"Tan me hide when I'm dead, Fred". Ironic really

Some would say "good", although at 93 he's had a good run. I'm a wee bit conflicted about Rolf. Yes, he was a bastard, so it turned out, and somehow I knew that for a long time. When they were all being rounded up in the aftermath of the Savile revelations I'm on record as saying "they'll be coming for Rolf Harris next". Jimmy Savile always gave me the creeps and I never cared at all for Gary Glitter but Rolf was an important part of my childhood, in an entirely innocent way. He was a sublimely talented children's entertainer and I know some say that you can't hear Sun Arise or Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport or Jake the Peg without them now being tainted by a whole new subtext but I can still enjoy singing them, including to children who don't know the truth.

(I love the music of Richard Wagner too and he was a completely nasty piece of work in so many ways. Antisemitism wasn't the half of it)

I recall in the 80s when I had to go and get RH to be interviewed at the Motor Show. I was ahead of him when he grabbed my bum. I couldn't quite believe it! It certainly changed my view of him.

I was also shocked when he was found guilty. I thought that this can’t be true.
I’m so very sad his family had to live through this.
I didn’t follow the case but it was so unexpected to me. I saw him often in the art shop in town. I never spoke with him or acknowledged his presence.
May he rest in peace.

I met him many years ago at a dinner. He was very nice and he and I got into conversation about Indian fabrics and where you could buy it. He also visited a school near us and did one of his Rolf art demonstrations. He donated the picture to the school. He was great fun. It was interesting that The Telegraph, yesterday had a long obituary about his life and career but hardly mentioned his arrest, only in passing.

Paedophiles live normal lives, often are pillars of the community, on TV maybe, or could be family or a friendly neighbour, but behind closed doors they are very different.
So hearing friends of these people saying they couldn’t possibly do such a thing as they are lovely people.....etc etc means nothing because paedophiles manipulate and deceive.

I was born in 1960 and as a very small child , pre school age if RH came on the radio I would go into a complete meltdown! Screaming and crying. I was so scared of him . He would have to be switched off .
My family all thought this was very strange as he was so popular but I think I knew instinctively he was a wrong un .

I used to like him when I was young with his wobbling washboard and tie me kangaroo down ,sport. I was very shocked to hear about his disgusting behaviour and at first I wondered if someone was out to frame him and /or get money out of him. He certainly didn’t seem creepy like Savile and Glitter but then many paedophiles don’t, do they ?

Didn't he do a teach young kids to swim show years ago? It looked innocent at the time but it makes you wonder if it was another excuse to touch up youngsters in the water.

Couldn't agree more. Good riddance to bad rubbish. I really feel for all his victims.

Have you heard Venessa Feltz taking about her horrible experience while interviewing him on The Big Breakfast.
Those interviews were conducted on a bed.
His wife was less than 2’ away while Rolf Harris had his hand at her knicker line. His wife saw everything.

He also toured schools educating children in how to be aware of inappropriate touching. He was pure evil 😡

That is manipulation in the extreme!

Glad he's gone, horrible man x

Years ago a young acquaintance was tasked with driving Rolf Harris to a theatre where he was performing. He said Harris kept up a stream of filthy jokes the whole way and was abusively rude to the band at the theatre. He found him a very unpleasant person..

It’s awful that this thread is still going.

Kryptonite Thu 25-May-23 17:24:47

We chucked all our kids' Animal Hospital books in the bin when the revelations came to light. Felt very betrayed and sickened.

Saggi Thu 25-May-23 17:48:54

Shame there is no hell to torment him !

ruthie2 Thu 25-May-23 18:59:15

I see that there's a docu-drama about him already being advertised on ITVX. Which means it was already made and they were just waiting for him to die. That's ghoulish.

kwest Thu 25-May-23 23:05:38

I was shocked that the Times and The Telegraph published obituaries of this man's life. His funeral was apparently kept private and his death was not announced until after his cremation. I believe it was in bad taste to do more than announce his death in more than a brief and simple statement.

LadyHonoriaDedlock's heading to this thread would have been sufficient.

Oasthouse, flowers Yes it should always be about supporting the innocents. There is plenty of unlauded talent out there, in all genres and cultures, to overlay these offenders. But don't completely wipe them from history, or we will lose the lessons learned.

Nannashirlz Fri 26-May-23 13:00:03

Yes like many famous celebrities who abused kids the min I heard that I went right off him he doesn’t deserve my time or energy like they say good riddance i say

May he rest in peace

Why?

icanhandthemback Fri 26-May-23 13:34:44

I can't find it in myself to wish that he rests in peace but I do hope that the non-complicit members of his family are now left to live their lives more peacefully.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 26-May-23 13:34:46

He was a sexual predator.

He engineered his career to have a happy go lucky exterior whilst the same career gave him access to young children and females.

There is no hierarchy regarding these type of men, famous or not, they all disgust me as do their families if they knew what was going on.

RH’s wife was within 2 meters of him and must have seen what he was up to on one occasion when he was sexually assaulting a young female, was she his enabler ?

I agree, but have doubts as to whether his wife was totally unaware of his sexual tendencies.
